"Nice property and great location"
This hotel was nice and location was great. I suppose the price had more to do with location than anything else. We only stayed one day as we were en route to Patagonia. It was in walking distance of decent restaurants and public transportation.
"I gave this hotel a rating of 'terrible', because 'horrible' isn't available. And thus we begin. When I arrived at the Alvear Art Hotel around 1pm on a weekday, a frustrated tourist was just departing and insulting the front desk staff for their less than stellar service. In her case, finding a hotel taxi for the airport that would accept a credit card. That should have been a red flag. Now, when you're paying almost $400/night in what is supposed to be a 5 star hotel in South America, you have expectations not of good service but of amazing service. Good luck with that! My room wasn't ready so they offered me an upgrade. I turned it down saying that my limited time in the city was important, and I just wanted the standard room I had booked. They then admitted they didn't have any rooms available at the time. I called a friend who lived nearby and she gave me access to her apartment via the doorman, which allowed me to shower and run to an appointment. I then made it back to the hotel to see if the room was ready (note: they neglected to text me to let me know when the room would be ready, as I had requested). So after picking up my key at a front desk that is beyond arrogant, I finally entered the room at 3:30pm. The bellboy was trying to recite the many amenities of the hotel when I looked out my room window, and was regaled with the best sight in the city of apartment building air conditioners. Many of the downtown buildings are quite old and don't have central air, you see. So, here we are in an interior room facing dilapidated buildings with A/C units hanging from windows and the like. In fact, the building right across from me was apparently under renovations, and the work crew in one of the floors was having a late brown bag lunch. They were having a grand time and in fact waved at me. All of this is happening in an environment in which the staff could care less about its clients and had no compunctions about showing it. In a chat with a taxi driver later in the day, I found out that the hotel routinely adds 25% to all hotel taxis headed toward the airport. So, I negotiated directly with the cab driver for an early pick up the next morning. I could go on and on, but decided that these folks weren't going to ruin my short stay. Let me just finish by saying that if you have $400 to burn, then do so by staying at a nearby 3 star hotel for $100, and use the remaining $300 to splurge on the finest meal in town and copious Argentine wine. Because the Alvear Art Hotel is simply a royal rip-off."
"Contemporary hotel in the heart of the financial district"
We only stayed one night, but that was enough for us to come away with a great impression of the property. The staff was attentive and caring. They were always stretching to do more, it seemed. We arrived quite late due to a flight issue with Aeorlineas Argentinas (a review for another time), and only had a short time to grab a drink and tapas in the bar. The staff hung around past midnight and were very accommodating. The breakfast buffet was very, very diverse given the multiple nationalities staying at the hotel. The food quality was very good. The gym and pool are on the upper floor with amazing views. While the gym is not the largest hotel gym, it was adequate for cardio and some weights. The pool has a retractable roof which allowed for some tanning while enjoying the views. We had stayed at the Alvear Palace previously, which is great, but this property is much more contemporary and much less stuffy.
The hotel is very well located. Rooms are large, well equipped and comfortable. Bathroom is excellent, with three separate areas. Rooftop pool is not large but very nice, with spectacular views of the city. Gym also is very good. Adequate breakfast, great bar, professional service throughout. Had one dinner at the restaurant, not a large selection but very good cuisine (we are italian, so that recommendation means something). Overall, I strongly recommend this hotel and will come back if in BA.
"Good location, large deluxe rooms, great service"
Our room, and especially the bathroom, was very large and comfortable. The bathroom had a shower and a bathtub, with water temperature controls. The bed was comfortable. The location was great; we walked most places we wanted to see. The people gave us great recommendations for activities. The bar made great cocktails, and was a great place to unwind. Our last day, we left at 8:00PM, and they graciously let us shower and change in the spa.
