"Corporate hotel a bus ride from Venice"
Mestre is a mainland 'suburb' of Venice. The Ambasciatore is a 10 minute case pull from Venice Mestre rail station but easy enough to find with google maps on. Earlier in the week we'd stayed at smaller 'boutique' style hotels in Rome and Florence so the larger, more corporate Ambasiatore was a bit of a contrast. The staff were friendly enough and as our room was not ready, allowed us to pop our case into their luggage room. We went to the bar and had a welcome (if a tad expensive) drink. One of the reception staff came over with our key to tell us when it was ready, although we'd been told to give it an hour. I thought this was a nice touch. The room was a good size, very smart and with a huge tv (no real English speaking channels). There were no drink making facilities as I'd expect in a 4 star hotel and the toilet was very close to the wall. Otherwise it was a nice room, plenty of space and extra bedding. Breakfast was disappointing as everything was self service, there was a very limited selection of pastries and cooked food. Venice is a bus ride away - bout 20 minutes to Punta Roma water bus and bus station. To get onto Venice island you either cross the bridge on foot (views are fantastic) or jump on a water bus. You can purchase the Venizia Unica cards online and collect easily at Punta Roma or just wait and buy them there. Good value way of getting around ( especially if you're staying in Mestre) as it gives you unlimited bus / water bus travel. 2 days is €30 and 3 days €40. Also suggest buying the museum pass on line - I've since found out it is valid for 6 months and you can go to each place once. Around the corner from the hotel is the fabulous Ristorante di Carla. Superb food, grear service and fairly priced. I probably wouldn't stay at this hotel again (mostly due to location) but next time we're in Venice, we'll return to the restaurant as we both fell in love with it.
"Ideal location for easy access to venice by bus"
Large Lovely comfy room continental style breakfast nice big shower and decent hairdryer with toiletries nice comfortable bar area and very pleasant staff ideal for getting bus to venice from outside of hotel plus you can buy bus tickets at reception
This hotel is perfect for visiting Venice, only 10 mins on the bus, which stops just across the road. Past reviews have said that the place needs renovated, well the work has started, we had a room which appeared newly finished, it was all bright and white, maybe a bit on the bright side when all the lights on. Our room over looked the back yard, so no road noise. The breakfast was exactly what it said on the tin, very basic, but food on offer of a good quality. The bar was good, Toni the bartender was very attentive and made us the best gin and tonics we have ever tasted. The hotel only gets an average rating as the bed must have been the most uncomfortable bed I have ever tried to sleep on. Oh yes and the cleaners wear clogs in the morning.
"Beware of being moved"
Arrived for a short 4 day break (mon-thurs) we had an early flight to make most of time there so arrived mid morning to hotel. Aware couldn't check in until 2pm but was given room number etc and allowed to leave bags in storage room. Told to come back at 2pm for room keys. Explored local area around hotel so not a problem. At 2pm we were told maid had not come back with keys yet and would let us know once room ready. After around an hour and a shift change of reception staff we were then told they couldn't find our booking. We luckily had room number details given on card by morning receptionist as the morning receptionist had already taken our printed booking confirmation paperwork when we arrived to drop off bags. Without having this info written down I fear would have been a lot more difficult in proving our paid for booking at the time. on giving the card/room info we had been given were told we were now booked in for their sister hotel as had trouble with heating for our room. Complained that had not been told any of this previously and had paid for this hotel but lied to by reception saying problem only just happened so couldn't tell us when arrived. This was obviously untrue as room number we were given on arrival was the room number for hotel we were moved to and if we had been booked into this hotel and thenmoved short notice as they were trying to make out would have been different room numbers (also found out later this hotel didn't even have the room number we were given on arrival so had definitely been booked at different hotel on arrival but not told!!!) There were a few people in same situation so beware as you may turn up and then be moved with no notification. Luckily we were only moved to sister hotel next door but others moved further to different hotels. It was clear the morning receptionist didn't deal with situation and notify us of our move on our arrival and lied about keys not being ready as knew she would be gone before we got keys as was nearly time for staff changeover. She just left it for her colleague in afternoon to inform us we had been moved. Poor show really and left us waiting over an hour from 2pm to even find out which was even more annoying and not a good start to our short break. Seems a bit of a roulette when booking this hotel !!
"Good travel links for Venice"
We only had a 3 night break so we could visit Venice this hotel was all what we needed it to be .... Good travel links with the bus stopping over the road from the hotel for the 15 minuet drive to Venice. You can buy your bus & boat tickets from the main reception they have a sign on the desk so you can choose your options. Our room was clean but quite small but had a fridge & hair dryer but no kettle so take your own also a free safe in room. Breakfast was continental but they did have scrambled egg & bacon as much as you liked as was tea coffee & hot chocolate. It was basic but ok. Outside their was a McDonalds and a big Spar supermarket. I would recommend this hotel if as we did only need a place to lay your head at night.
