Just got back from a 5 day stay. Our two families rented 3 over the water villas - one with a pool and they were all next to each other which was a great surprise. I would highly recommend stretching the budget to stay in an over the water villa. The views and ocean life are so amazing it is hard to describe. The over the water villa with pool also came with a room butler which I didn't realize at the time of booking but really made everything so easy from booking restaurants and spa treatments to being available to drive us in a golf cart anywhere. The last day we were able to use an unoccupied beach villa since we were not leaving until evening. Those rooms and clean and nice but dark and the bathrooms are outside which we found hot and encountered mosquitoes. Food quality was exceptional throughout the resort with the exception of Aqua which I did not think was very good. We took advantage of every restaurant on property and at Veli. Highly recommend lunch at Sea. Salt. Fire - no better view!!
"This must be how Paradise feels like! "
What started out as birthday escapade with the family turned out to be something more personally bittersweet. I was diagnosed with cancer 2 weeks ago and had to be scheduled for surgery. After nights of self-pity and self-therapeutic shrieks which I am now honestly ashamed of, my husband and doctor decided to bring forward the holiday for medical and personal reasons. So with our 2 toddler gals in tow, we set off to idyllic Maldives... only to start out on a wrong foot with Reservations. I was initially livid with Reservations for reasons I will not elaborate here and was dreading that my ability to enjoy this much needed trip is going to be affected. But wrong was I! This could be one of our best family vacation yet. This is all thanks to the amazing team behind Anantara Dhigu. Firstly, I must personally thank the GM Gauderic who is virtually omnipresent everywhere on the island! From the daily breakfast rounds, to Reception, jetty, or various parts of the island, be it morning or late at night, you definitely can't miss this personable GM who makes it a point to go extra and beyond for the guests. Having worked in hospitality for many years, I believe Anantara is very lucky to have such a hands-on GM who leads by example. We have been to other Anantara resorts (or other leading luxury hotels) where we never got to meet the GMs. He clearly understood the charm and assets of the property and island and never tries to exploit it for short term gains, hence keeping the beauty of the entire island experience intact. And the rooms! We must say the Anantara Overwater villa is the way to go here. Every night we watched sunsets by our private pool, where we would occasionally spot stingrays, black tipped baby reef shark, parrot fish, and other big and small fish. With easy access to the sea from our private villa, we were happy to note that the currents are never strong (unlike Sixth Sense Laamu which I had difficulty swimming back to villa!) and water is always shallow (great for kids). Nothing beats waking up to clear blue skies and seas. Come breakfast, we always look forward tot the smile and warmth of Monette who would always personally ask after our needs every morning. She's beautiful and amazing! Who can also forget Ali, Shameen, Riza at Aqua bar where we would lunch and lounge by the poolside everyday. Ali with his easygoing friendly ease with guests, to Shameen always ready to shower some attention to kids with complimentary fruit sticks and icicles), to Riza who impressed me with her discreet attention when she noted I didn't quite take to the mocktail I ordered and offered to replace it. Did I also mention how family friendly this resort is' There is a tv lounge area and kids buffet area at aqua bar. And also tiny kids sandals, towels, bedside slippers befitting of their age. Our kids also love the coconut painting session, the swings and treehouse at their kids club. Faith at the kids club would also suggest impromptu ideas such as inviting one of the staff to climb the coconut trees to pluck fresh coconuts for the children. How cool is that' :) Babysitting is also a breeze with Tara who seems to be such a kind and warm soul. She made it possible for us to sneak out for dinner with my husband. If you can only spare 1 night out without the kids, please make it Baan Huraa the Thai restaurants on Anantara Veli next door. As we are living in Asia, we didn't have high expectations for a Thai restaurant in Maldives but we are completely blown away by the romantic setting, beautiful walk under the canopy of twinkling stars, to the islet by the rocky sea, smiling Thai staff, to the impeccable food! I dare say it's even better than many of the famous Thai restaurants I have had in Asia! Writing this make me wish I am back munching on the tom yum soup, soft shell crab, beef cheek curry and mango sticky rice all over again!!! Wow. And we are never running out of things to do everyday! The daily suggestions offered at the breakfast table is always a good way to plan the day. Snorkeling at their private Picnic Island was just jaw dropping amazing. I want to always remember swimming amongst the various fishes big and small, as the fishes flicker like flash cards under the sunlight. It's like jumping into a real life aquarium. It was so beautiful and surreal even for a diver like me (ok I have only dived 5 times ever). My husband suggested we swim with wild dolphins just 30min away. I haven't been able to swim as vigorously as before and Adam was so kind to help along. With his supersonic eyes he is always able to spot a pod of dolphins underwater. At one point I think I was probably swimming with 30 spinner dolphins. I didn't manage to get really to be arms length proximity to them but I will always remember how the playful dolphin babies would spin in the sky while the bigger dolphins would swim so gracefully, sometimes with their underbelly up. I keep telling myself this is the image I want to think about when at the operating theatre next Friday (thinking abt the family wld surely get me too emotional! Sorry kids, but dolphins are definitely more calming and probably better behaved ;). What else except to say thank you for the amazing holiday.
"Perfect place for a relaxing holiday with babies"
We spent one week in March (half board+ speed boat transfer included) with a baby of 20 months. It was a very relaxing stay, in a wonderful place with all possible comforts for families. We started with a very gentle welcome: there is a dedicated reception room in the airport where you can have some refreshment, then transfer by speed boat -approx 30mins - with well prepared and gentle crew till you reach the island with staff waiting for you with traditional music. We stayed in a sunrise beach villa which had all the comfort we needed and was large enough for a family. We had our private garden with nice shadow very close to the sea where we spent the majority of our time since for our son the light and temperature was too strong to stay directly on the beach in the hot hours (10.30-->15) but this is personal and anyway we were not bored as the sea it is few steps away and we were relaxing drinking our coconut served by a gentle and fun beach guru. The beach and sea was simply wonderful, and we enjoyed it in the early morning and late afternoon. You can really stay till the sunset (and after) as it remains warm also in the night. During the stay we did not do much because our only target was to relax and enjoy our son, but there are many things you could do. You can rent for free snorkelling equipment. We made a fishing excursion and the day after we ate what we fished in our room (charge but fair price). There is a very nice park for children where they organize many activities. We could use it and participate to some activities although the baby was small, of course with our presence due to his age. We also enjoyed the food. We found half board convenient, but we would not have taken full board as at lunch we were often eating less or nothing. Locations for dining are very nice and there is enough variety and good cuisine. With half board we found more convenient the buffet because of the variety and you could eat as much as you wanted. But we could also go to other restaurants and choose between a selection (restricted but good) of dishes. Everywhere (not only for dining, but for whatever you ask) service is really excellent. Target of everyone is to make you happy! They were also very gentle and warm with our baby. So definitely a place reccommended for all, also for families with small babies. Anantara Dhigu: we will come back! The only thing which I personally did not like it is the breakfast. There was a good selection of food, but the location is too hot and I did not feel going there with my baby when we were waking up late (after 8.30 it is really too warm already!). But for example my husband was ok with it. So that's the only potential for improvement for me, the rest was simply perfect!
"Awesome Stay and Nice short getaway trip!!"
Awesome villas and amazing restaurant selections. A bit pricey for their restaurants but the japanese was well worth it!! Second best wud be the Thai restaurant!!!! The Most amazing service comes from the COCONUT GUY!! I think his name is Xavier.. greeted us every morning or day with a smile.. pick us the best coconut available which never fails us... tries to upsell his coconut in d bestest manner.. two thumbs up! Nonetheless, the Staff at anantara dhigu are really friendly and amazing! Even with children!!
If your looking for paradise, this is it! The location is wonderful, the accommodation is fantastic, the food is tasty & the staff are brilliant!!!!!! We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary & couldn't think of a better place. You can do as little or as much as you like.
