"Far from the madding crowd"
Our first Anantara experience and our first trip to Thailand as a couple. This lovely hotel is in a great location, literally 5 minutes drive from the airport (book the return limo via the hotel website before arrival - 600 THB each way). Surprisingly little air traffic or road noise, despite being on the main road towards the "Chaweng Strip". Beach and pool areas are well maintained and service to loungers around the poolside is attentive, choose a cabana on the beach (free of charge) and you have your own buzzer to summon service! Our villa had it's own plunge pool, although not big enough to swim it was a welcome perk for cool downs, access straight to the shower possible for the more agile..... The library is a lovely feature, complimentary coffee, computers with fast internet and well air conditioned. If you have a late flight after check out, there are lockers behind reception and towels are provided for you to take a shower before departure. Overall there are few downsides to this resort.....a large number of steps to the poolside, restaurant and Ocean Kiss may make it difficult for some. In house dining options are pricey, but room rate included breakfast is good and happy hours (whilst above average) are a treat given the spectacular views. Recommended option for the price.
"Incredible level of service"
My wife and I booked our trip through virgin and stayed in Bangkok for 2 nights then the Anantara for 12 nights. When we arrived we checked and the desk staff were brilliant however we were attempted to be sold some kind of time share holiday package where we would go for half a day and be talked to about how great their services were! We had booked a plunge pool room and whilst the room was clean and tidy we did have some issues: The room layout, the toilet doesn't have a separate door and therefore if you want to use the toilet whilst your other half is doing her hair in the bathroom this could be a challenge. The lights in the bathroom are not adequate and therefore made it a challenge for my wife to do her hair and make up. The plunge pool we didn't use once, it was under shade and therefore didn't really get the sun so was cold plus there were the dreaded mosquitos around it. We had a turn down service come at 18:00 everyday which was great and the staff were lovely. We arrived on the 9th and are leaving on the 21st Feb. There were no issues with getting a table for breakfast or finding sun beds (either round the pool or at the beach. There were 3 main staff looking after the pool and beach. Moo, Tony and Oh, these guys were outstanding and nothing was too difficult for them. When we are arrived we had one meal in the hotel restaurant which was excellent and again the service was brilliant. Now the reason why this only got 3 stars. When we booked we were advised not to go fully inclusive as food and drink is so cheap in Thailand......well it's not at the Anantara! We even got charged for the water in the fridge in our room which I'm sorry is an utter disgrace! When we were on the beach and ordered water we were charge 220bht (just over £5) for a litre bottle of water. Directly opposite the hotel is a supermarket which sold 1.5 litre for 15Bht (34p) The cocktails were 350 - 400bht! the food in the restaurant was expensive along with the spa facilities. It feels like to hotel is attempting to be high end but it's not located in a high end location, the stretch of beach outside the hotel is spotless however go 2 meters either side and it's disgusting, plastic bottles, nappies it's like someone has emptied rubbish bins along the coast line! We went to both bars in the hotel at night and the most amount of people we saw was 5 people and that was only for a short while. I spoke to some of the guests and they informed me they didn't want to pay the high prices and would go out. Needless to say there was no atmosphere in the hotel after 18:00. We ended going out every night to the Fishermans Village however it cost us 400bht each way (this is a set price) Would I stay here again, unfortunately no.
