Our visit to the Big Apple was made even more memorable by our Andaz 5th Avenue experience. We initially narrowed down our choices to 3 properties within the area and we're so happy we made the best choice for our accomodation...
"Huge room for NYC, Great location, zero view, and few amenities"
This was a business stay so I didn't need some opulent view or concierge lounge, etc. This hotel is directly across from the library and a very chic kind of way. The entrance is easy to miss and a bit indistinct. I have to admit, when I drove up to valet my car, a pretty plain-clothes guy walked up to me and asked for the key. Without a clearly marked entrance, no valet parking sign, and no indication that this guy was, in fact, employed by the hotel, I was a little taken aback - though his extraordinary charm and friendliness won me over in moments. The lobby is "trendy" as in there is no real check in counter - it is a table in the middle of a room with some MACs on it. Still, it works and the staff here are also phenomenal. The young woman that aided my check in was flawless in her delivery and also took the time to guide me to my room - which under normal circumstances I would have declined, but this is a slightly "unmarked" hotel and my room was in a different tower that was only accessible by going up one elevator, then walking through an interesting 2nd floor event space, and then finding a really poorly indicated second set of elevators. When I got into the room, the first thing you'll notice are the ceilings are very, very high for NYC. The room was spacious, and the bathroom was off the charts. My guide showed me how things worked (which was actually needed) including the crazy shower and the electric blinds. There is a complimentary component of the mini-bar which is a nice touch that I'm seeing more and more in these types of hotels. There is a bar downstairs - again, I didn't find it my first couple times - but eventually made my way. It is called, The Bar Downstairs and it was worth a visit. Again, recurring theme, excellent service. What you don't get in the hotel is a view (in my case), there isn't a coffee maker in the room, there isn't an executive lounge, and the "business center" isn't really conducive to that function as it is practically the lobby. In any case - would certainly consider this a great option when I'm working on Park Ave and don't want a long walk.
"Another great trip to NYC"
Stayed at this hotel one week ago, excellent midtown hotel right opposite NY Public Library and one block from Bryant Park, we stayed in an Andaz Loft room, which was huge, separate lounge area with desk, very large bathroom with walk in shower big enough for about 4 people! Also like modern decor, only slight criticism not enough wardrobe space, there was a small single wardrobe in corner of bedroom and no drawer space at all. Staff were always very helpful particularly Justin on front desk with directions and getting cabs. Hotel definitely has an equality ethos, when we left hotel one of the female front desk staff was sent up to take our luggage. Would definitely stay at this hotel again, have been to NYC many many times and this was one of the best hotels we have stayed in.
"Minimalist Style with Mininimalist Service"
We stayed here for a family event. I had Hyatt points and used them for this stay. Let's say I got what I paid for. The Location in midtown is outstanding. The rooms are large by New York standards and very nicely decorated. Everything was very futuristic in the minimalist style. Everything in the room was very clean and worked well. But the service or lack of it was shocking. I have stayed at other Andaz properties and had amazing service but not here. From check in to check out we had to beg for attention. No one really seemed to care or be available. When we arrived by car it took some work to get a valet to park it. We received an email about on line check in before we arrived. I had to call the hotel directly to arrange the room. About 8PM, long after I checked in I got an email telling me the room was ready. Any time I attempted to use the phone for questions, it took several attempts to get anyone on the phone. When we asked for a refill on soft drinks we were told that it would take several hours. The wine social was also joke. We had to run around to get someone to serve us the wine and getting a refill was equally as difficult. No one offered us any wine when we sat down. Check out was equally difficult and to top it off after I left and received a completed folio I received a charge for liquor that I never consumed on my credit card account. After a call today this was removed I think. I was quite surprised at how poorly this hotel ran. Weekend "B" crew.' Other reviews seem to indicate good service.
Had an excellent stay at Ndaz with the staff going beyond themselves to help me celebrate my girlfriends birthday weekend. the staff could not have done a better job. will definitely be back and reccomend the hotel without reservation.
