"Some of the rooms are ridiculously big"
Came here with a group of friends for the weekend. The hotel looks out of place as it a beautiful 5 star hotel in a cul-de-sac which backs onto some less than fresh faced flats. 15 minutes in a taxi from Sofia airport which came to 40 Bulgarian Lev. Some of the rooms are stupidly big. I stayed in a twin room which had 2 single beds. Other friends that I went with had separate bedrooms within their hotel room whilst others had a bathroom separate to the WC. The bathroom was huge. The bath was big enough for 2 and the shower was a wet room again 2 people could sit in! Mini bar in the room sets you back 2 Lev for a bottle of water (one came complimentary with the room) and 3 Lev for a can of coke. Reception staff speak English and deal in both Bulgarian Lev and Euro's. Breakfast was buffet style with both hot and cold options. Food was very nice.
The immediate area around the hotel is not very inviting however because it's quite central, most of the monuments are withing walking distance. Rooms are very classy, L'Occitane toiletries, kettle and hairdryer in the room. Below ground floor level some roman ruins and boardrooms. SPA and gym, the first one quite pricey however very stylish and relaxing. Food in the restaurant good but looking at the prices you might want to venture into town somewhere.
The hotel is a 5 stars hotel, the stuff were great, very helpful. Breakfast was delicious. The rooms are very comfortable, very big and pleasant. The location is very central, so you can walk around and see most of the major attractions.
"Great location, large rooms, things to improve"
Arena di Serdica is a boutique hotel at a great central location. Even the standard rooms were really large, well above the average in many countries. They are decorated in a very cosy yet modern style and give you a feeling of luxury. They were also very clean and the bathroom and shower lavish. There were certain things however, which if they were not present, would have given this hotel a top rating: 1. There was an intense smell of carpets or similar throughout the corridor and unfortunately into the room itself. Not to be confusing, it was very clean - however my partner felt choking and we ended up sleeping with windows half open at 1 degree celsius outside.... 2. The bed was large, but the matters very very hard, so we didnt feel the luxury of the hotel during our resting hours. 3. Also whilst we ordered (and got) a double bed, there were unfortunately 2 duvets which made our sleeping time even less uncomfortable! 4. The breakfast was good, however for a 5-star hotel it could be much better. Another small thing that we suggest the hotel management looks into, was that a cappuccino was charged extra. This is not really 5-star hotel-like! On the other hand, the staff were polite and courteous and made us feel welcome and treated us well. Overall a nice experience. If those 3 things were taken care of (especially #1) it would be a Strong Recommend in our book. As it was, a Recommend!
"Better than expected "
It was a lucky coincidence that I ended up choosing this hotel for a recent group event - we were looking for a luxurious place in Sofia city with Spa facitilities, good quality of food and interesting grounds for photo shoots. Here you will find all of these. It was definitely better than I expected (as I had never been to the hotel) but don't expect five star franchise quality. Still, staff was friendly and helped with all of our requests. Rooms are large and spacious, the bed was enormous and super comfortable, you'd wish you could stay there forever. Bathroom is a dream with great amenities from l'occitane. Meals were really good - we had lunch and dinner for our group of 15 pax. and everyone was happy. The Spa is a must, the ambience is nice and calming and while you're relaxing you could have a mask on - what we did exactly. The ancient ruins at bottom level add a note of historical importance to the property. If I can point to one thing that needs renovation, that would be the conference center - carpets are old and carry a certain smell. All in all, if you don't look for super luxurious conference space, this hotel is a great spot at the center of Sofia.
