The Barceló Tambor Beach hotel is located in the magnificent Playa Tambor de la Bahía Ballena on the Nicoya Peninsula, 15 km from the town of Tambor.
The flight from the Juan Santamaría Airport in San José to Tambor Airport takes about 25 minutes. You can also arrive by ferry from the port of Puntarenas (90 km from San José) to Puerto de Paquera (about 25 minutes' drive from the hotel by car).

We recently visited Barceló Tambor during a family get-together for Labor Day weekend 2016. We were a group of about 20 people and there were a few ups and downs, but overall a pleasant experience. We arrived at the hotel fairly late (caught the ferry at 5pm), and got to the hotel at around 7:30pm. The check-in process was rather lengthy since for some odd reason the payment couldn't be taken BEFORE actually getting to the hotel. I called about 3+ times, insisting that the payment be taken and according to their 'policy', it was impossible for them to do so. I found that to be ridiculous. There was also some type of confusion on the amount of people in each room after I had specifically designated the number of adults/children per room. After finally getting our room keys, some of our family members found that the rooms were not up to par....the a/c's weren't cooling (and they were super loud), the fridge wasn't working... I even found a semi-dead roach in my room. YUCK!!! Overall very outdated! ... Room service was called by some guests and I guess you can say the issues were somewhat resolved. Now, as for the food....it's "ok" ... I didn't have a chance to try the sushi restaurant but did eat at the "Tucan Buffet" and at "El Rancho Steak and Seafood" .... For the latter, reservations must be made at around 8am since the restaurant tends to fill up quickly The food at the buffet is "ok" ... there is a wide selection of food and the waiters there are extremely nice and ready to serve you. The food at "El Rancho" is NOT worth it. The amount of food served is laughable (smaller than a child's plate), and the taste is just bland! Not worth it at all! I'd recommend sticking with the buffet.....Other than that, the daily entertainment and pool and beach areas are excellent! My nephew LOVED the kid sized pool. I'm just not too sure if I'd visit again.
"Vacation - with family"
We truly enjoyed all the staff and hotel management - our bell hop Minor was extremely helpful with everything. This hotel has a little of everything, The staff was extremely helpful and ensured that we have everything we needed. The only thing is the wi-fi - we paid 20 dollars for two days and was unable to connect. They should be available for free to all guest.
"Poor quality but nice place "
Last weekend I visited with family and kids and although we enjoyed our stay, there were a few things I would like to highlight concerning Barcelo Tambor. First, it seems that the hotel is not prepared to host big demand of people as several events were going on in the hotel (marathon contest, quinceanera party, etc) and the response of the personnel was slow and poor; for example it took us around thirty minutes in the line to check in and another thirty to check out. Also, the customer service and response were poor; for example, I had asked days in advance for a cradle for my baby to sleep in and it was not installed in the room when we got there (it took them around two hours to finally install it and their excuse was that they were short of staff that day). They were slow in responding to my calls - long waiting times to get ahold of the receptionist and they never answered in the spa because apparently their system was down. Finally the quality of the food was poor (cold bufet food, flies around). Despite these things we made the most out of the experience and enjoyed family time at the pool and at the beautiful Tambor beach.
"Barcelo Beach Costa Rica "
We've had a great vacation here in Costa Rica at the beach. The all inclusive hotel was fabulous. The shows at night we're also fabulous. The service from the personnel is fantastic especially from Luis Andres in the Steak And seafood restaurant. I highly recommend this place to anyone. I also recommend to use the small airplane that lands at the airfield next door, it'll save many hours of time on the road.
"A Much Needed Vacation"
First of all, I want to say thanks to Edwin and the Staff at the the Japanese Restaurant Miyako for the Top Quality Service provided. We came here for some very needed vacations and my daughters first trip to the beach. The Check In at 12:30 went smooth as possible and the receptionist was very delightful and provided all information needed. We did though have to wait till 3:00 to be able to get into our rooms. I assume that its to tidy the rooms so it was fine with us since we got to enjoy of the other facilities. The rooms we requested were amazing and nothing short of being top class. Bathroom full of toiletries, fresh towels, clean tub and toilet. Bed were made and the Air Conditioner was on. We ate at their Buffet "El Tucan" and we we pleased with the service the restaurant personelle not only provided us but my daughter by making her fresh vegetable baby food every day. The food on the first day was kind of dull but on the subsequent days was way better. To be honest there was one of many downfalls to this hotel like customer service and assistance but the main one is the Steakhouse and Seafood restaurant. We reserved a table on our 2nd night here and were seated by a friendly hostess, but besides that the service was extremely bad. I had asked for a Mojito from a female waitress and waited close to 15 minutes till I asked her if there was a problem. She just replied if her co-worker had not told me that they did not have them tonight and just left without asking if I wanted something else to drink. I assume that they should know what is and is not available so they could avoid a client waiting for nothing. Took them a bit short of an hour to bring us a menu ( we got one just because a waiter came by asking us if we were ready to order so you can imagine how long we had to wait to get served ). I had asked my steak to be medium well and got it well done, I was not going to return it since I already was unsatisfied with the service from this restaurant had provided. It became horrendous when they brought a cake saying "Happy Birthday", we requested it to say nothing since it was intended to go to my daughters godfather who came with us on this trip. He had a family member pass away the previous night and wanted to provide something sweet as a token due to his loss. Our 3rd night changed our experience up to this point, we booked reservations for the Japanese Restaurant Miyako and were delighted with not only the top quality service and food provided here but also the attention provided to us by Edwin who works there. He was always making sure if we were satisfied with our food, if we required anything else. Provided us full details n their menu and was so on. He made the restaurant in sort of way feel like it was not part of the Hotel we were staying at just because of not only his but also the other waiters form of treating their customers. Service was so good that we stayed for desert and even though there was a minor snafu with what I had ordered for desert Edwin was great and fixed the error. We made reservations to go to the Japanese Restaurant Miyako again tonight since since its our last night. Not only did we enjoy the service provided and the fresh food. But my wife and I feel that this restaurant and its staff stood out the most and made our stay more enjoyable.
