We stayed at this resort in 2013. We would come back. the wildlife alone was simply amazing. There are many opportunities for fantastic excursions as well. The surroundings are amazing! We enjoyed the a la carte restaurants. We loved the interaction with locals and staff. We were very thankful to tripcentral in helping us book this vacation!
"Japanese restaurant "
We ate at this restaurant three times and each time Edwin and his staff made our experience wonderful excellent food very friendly people Vic Hoey from high river AB . The grounds at the resort were beautiful and most of the staff tried very hard to communicate with us but had very limited English knowledge. The night shows were devoid of English so could not understand anything Vic
Spent a week at this resort, from feb 9-15. Was told that kids went back to school on feb 6th, so luckily we didn't get a lot of locals at the hotel except for the weekend. Apparently this hotel is popular and visited by a lot of Costa Ricans from all over the country. Americans like to go to the Liberia region. Therefore, the daily evening entertainment is all done in Spanish, with no English translation. Pretty much every evening they had karaoke night ... I guess it's their favorite form of entertainment there! Only twice did they have a half hour "show" with dancing and singing. Their singing ended after 11pm and was so loud we could hear it all the way to villa 6 and couldn't sleep till it was all over. At around 6am the birds and monkeys woke up and made very loud noises ... our natural wake up alarm :) The food was ok, not a huge selection, but varied with every meal. My friend who is a vegan only ate rice, beans and some veggies every meal, every day. The country grows avocados but they hardly ever served it. He had to keep asking the chef for some fresh avocado. They only had pure cow milk, no soy or vanilla or nut milks. The buffet place did not make pure fruit juices or smoothies. The beach was very nice, clean, no seaweed, lots of chairs to sit on, many trees and palm trees for shade, and very wide, especially at low tide. Huge difference between high and low tide! Really nice swimming waves all the time! And the water temperature was great too, you could stay in the water for hours. I highly recommend water shoes, as this beach is rocky so walking on those pebbles is quite hard on the feet if you're not used to it. The resort itself is absolutely gorgeous, you feel like you're in paradise. Great, well taken care of gardens, with beautiful vegetation. From our room we could still see the ocean in the distance, even though it was not facing the ocean side. The room was clean, spacious, with two double beds, and the tv had more than just one English Channel. There were lots of things to do at the hotel, from golfing, to mini golf, tennis, ping pong, beach volleyball, aqua gym, dancing, gym, trampoline, rock climbing, a kids pool, etc. Just no seadoos or Catamarans. Overall I'd say the staff need to learn more English. We had asked one of the he waiters if they have avocado and he brought a bowl of ice cream! All in all it was a great resort and we enjoyed it.
The hotel was very good. Unofrtunately we did not realize that December and January is the equivalent of our summer holidays so I would have to say they were under staffed. Nino the waiter is exceptional and he made the holiday for us. The El Rancho was fantastic. The beach is excellent for walking and the waves are great playing in. It is very much a kids resort.
"Used to be better"
We came to this hotel for the first time exactly 2 yrs ago and were very happy with the experience, aside from a few rough edges, we enjoyed a lot our stay. We came again last weekend and unfortunately quality has come down, specially in the food department. The hotel is still well kept and everything in our room worked fine, public areas as well as rooms are clean and well kept, room furniture looks dated but work well. Our biggest disappointment was food. The buffet used to have lots of tasty options, lots of cheeses and cold meats and the flavor of the food was very good. This time we really noticed a change in quality. Food felt cheap and not as many options as before. Desserts were basically fruit, ice cream and several colored cakes. One day, our son was disappointed to find the only options on the kids menu were french fries and hard boiled eggs... We tried the Japanese restaurant this time and it was not much better. It was more a sushi bar with no hot options, service was a bit on the slow side as well. And unfortunately, they keep charging for internet. We still enjoyed our time here, but will be less enthusiastic about visiting again, this used to be one of the last good All Inclusives in CR, and now they'll have to put some love to make it worth it again.
