A very nice traditional Southern hotel with an outstanding location and excellent service.Comment of P. Thomas , United States the 2014-05-08
"A great get away"
Service was outstanding and everything is within walking distance. They brought us a basket of dog biscuits for our little dog and a bottle of champagne and desserts complimentary for our Anniversary. The spa is exquisite. And, the salt water pool on the 4th floor is divine. Massage was wonderful too. I wish they would have had a coffee maker, as it was a bit inconvenient to get coffee without doing room service. The main dining room has lots of grand ambiance and very intimate. We would definitely go there again.
"Great hotel in excellent location"
We very much enjoyed our stay here. We stayed on the club level which I highly recommend. Excellent wines, hors d'oeuvres and breakfast. There are things that could be fine tuned at this price point, but overall, I would stay there again.
"Not the same...."
I'm a frequent visitor to the Belmond, as I have business in the area. It is perfectly located, and has beautiful public spaces. That being said, the experience from visit to visit is like flipping a coin. On my last visit, the experience began with a LONG wait behind a group checking in. Over the last few years, the groups booked into Charleston Place have become occasionally unwieldly for other guests. The hotel is just big enough to house them, but small enough that they overwhelm the public spaces and create rough experiences if your timing is not just right on check in/check out. Front desk is always capable and friendly. I was booked into a premiere king room. I don't know if the bedding has changed over the past few months, but I will say that the last two times I've been very unhappy with the quality of the bed. Have I just gotten rooms where they hadn't updated the bed (strange if so, since I specifically book the premiere rooms for that reason), or do they use different types in different rooms' Anyway, it was below par. Additionally, several times over the past few stays I've had less than clean sheets. There were makeup stains on two of my pillows on this last stay. How does that happen at a nice hotel' Either they weren't changed, or there is absolutely no attention to detail paid by the housekeeping staff to ensure the cleaned linens are actually, you know, clean... I was in a club level room this past stay, and the club is amazingly underwhelming. Subpar. The physciall space is grand and beautiful. The breakfast is not. Coffee was out over 50% of the time (they were understaffed, as one person was tasked with the upkeep of the whole operation), there was no hot oatmeal or hot eggs, and was basically a spread of nice looking pastries and cereal with two small displays of fruit. Out of the dozen or so hotels I've stayed in Charleston, this club level was the only one where I felt the need to find breakfast after. Housekeeping is also intrusive. 7:40 the morning I was checking out, I'm in the shower and housekeeping walks into the room. I guess I could have placed the DND sign on the door, but I shouldn't have to expect that housekeeping would be walking into my room prior to 8 am! Finally, as I was checking out, a young couple was talking to one of the concierges. They were asking about dinner reservations, wanting to try a place Charleston is known for..... The concierge recommended Charleston Grill (in the hotel, of course), and when the couple asked about a very well known steakhouse and a well known seafood restaurant both a few blocks away, the concierge brushed them off and told them Charleston Grill was the place they needed to go. Now...Charleston Grill is a really solid choice, but this was akin to a time share approach in my opinion. I was certainly turned off by this display. Is the above relatively harsh' Absolutely. This Belmond should be a slam dunk choice for people visiting Charleston. I suspect that the new hotels popping up downtown have changed their focus to the larger groups they've been attracting, and the service and quality has adjusted accordingly.
"Best Hotel Stay EVER!"
My husband and I were blown away by the Belmond Charleston Place. We only stay at 4 and 5 star hotels, but this was by far the best service, cleanliness, and staff of any of them. From the moment we entered our room, we were treated like royalty. The hotel staff left a special happy anniversary cake and champagne for us. The nightly turn-down service with bottled waters was a nice touch. The rooms are newly remodeled and cozy and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel has the perfect location in downtown Charleston. It is right outside where you catch a carriage, shop, rent bikes and close to coffee shops and dining. We always want to try new hotels, but we will definitely be looking for the Belmond brand when we travel anywhere in the future. Thank you for an amazing stay!
"Beautiful as always."
Stayed there 1 night a couple of months ago. Price is high but the room was newly renovated. It was clean and beautiful. Great room service and in the heart of downtown Charleston. Highly recommend this for a great stay in Charleston.
