"Sumptuous dinner and stunning view for a very special dinner"
The hotel restaurant catered to all our needs and requests for a special dinner, giving us the best table in the house with the Teatro Antico behind us and the view of Taormina and the multiple bays in front from the corner of the balcony. The service was attentive and top class while the food was delicious. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants an unbeatable view at dinner, watching the sun set over the slopes of Mount Etna. David in the hotel lobby was particularly helpful, with tremendous customer service and ensuring everything was perfect for an engagement dinner. Many thanks to the Grand Hotel Timeo.
"30th Wedding Anniversary"
Spent six glorious days at this beautiful hotel to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Its full of old world charm, lovely views and has a fantastic staff. Traveled with our adult children and had two lovely suites that were spotlessly clean and very well cared for by the housekeeping staff. I would go so far to say that in all our travels, it was the best housekeeping staff we've ever experienced. Terrace for drinks each night before heading out to dinner - is a must do. Concierge staff was fantastic, not only helpful but extremely lovely people - all of them. We had them organize a few tours and a highlight of our entire trip was visiting a private winery. Pool area was beautiful with great service and though it is a small area for the size of hotel it has a wonderful set-up and guests come and go w/o holding loungers all day if not in use. I must give special mention to David. He was the first to greet us upon arrival and what a kind & sincere gentleman he is - we enjoyed seeing him every day if only to chat for a few moments. One evening we were at the Greek Theatre to see Tosca and the weather began to take a turn for the worse. David was there with a friend - on his night off. We were seated in front of him with other guests from the hotel and he insisted on running back to the hotel to retrieve umbrellas for us all - on his night off! What an asset to the hotel he is. So why the very good and not excellent rating... We arrived on August 22nd, the day of our 30th anniversary, and had pre-organized a special dinner, on the terrace - months in advance, with much correspondence that was not only verbal but with at least half a dozen emails with confirmed responses and promises. So we show up, all dressed up and ready to celebrate - and, they forgot all about it. I was devastatingly disappointed and they offered no excuse and barely an apology. Of course the rest of our stay was near perfect and I did manage to get over it but the memory of that special day is not a good one.
"Killer view for a price.."
Old, pretentious and stuffy. The view from their expansive outdoor balcony area that contains an expansive eating area, bar and sitting area is the best we've seen anywhere in Italy but it was the only highlight at this hotel. The rooms are old and stuffy. Our corner "deluxe junior suite" had no outside sitting area while less expensive rooms had full outdoor lounging areas. So you are in essence penalized for the larger room as most of the extra space wasn't useful. Would have preferred a smaller room with some outdoor space but of course nothing was available. The staff although helpful in general were not overly friendly nor welcoming. The breakfast was a real disappointment. Hotels in general need to hire nutritionists or at least someone connected with modern day nutritional guidelines. Many hotels offer food choices that are similar to the 1960's when so little was known about nutrition. I know this is Italy and all but how about something for breakfast besides sugar everything! We never saw anything green, everything healthy was a special order such as avocado, berries and gluten free bread. Half of the buffet was taken up with pastries, syrupy fruit and the like. Avoid the main restaurant at either of these Belmond hotels unless you have 2 plus hours for dinner and wish to pay $40.00 for a undersized bowel of vegetable soup. There is no value here just high prices for average food. We had a similar experience at the Hotel Caruso Belmond in Ravello with the exception of having a small sitting area outside but no lounging was possible. Their staff although attentive were not overly helpful either. Overall we didn't care for the vibe at either hotel given the very high price of admission, we expected more for these prices. We also had visited the Belmond Cipriani in Venice on a previous trip and found it to be completely different. This is why we chose these two other Belmonds. Friendly attentive staff, great breakfast with healthy options, and a fresher more modern vibe. Belmond obviously suffers from inconsistency at its hotels.
"Bravo to the staff!"
Even though this hotel comes with spectacular views and beautiful grounds - it's the staff that makes the difference here. Everyone was outstanding and one step ahead of your needs - especially David at the front door. We hosted guests for drinks one evening and he was kind enough to inquire the next day if they got home alright. We enjoyed our breakfast, snacks and dinner here, plus dined out in other places suggested by the front desk which turned out to be very good. The location made it easy for us to do our last minute shopping as this was our last stay on our weeks long tour around Sicily.
"Don't go to the Spa"
This is a beautiful hotel with a wonderful location next to an ancient greek amphitheatre so I expected that it would be a great place to get a massage. For the price, which turned out to be over $200 for 50 minutes converted from euros, it was a big disappointment. The staff and massage were fine, but there is no waiting or relaxation area for before or after and during the massage, which is normal at a hotel spa. But worse was that I could hear doors slamming and people talking all during the treatment, which ruined the experience for me. Certainly there should be soundproofing for an amenity in a hotel such as this - I mentioned this to the receptionist on the way out, but she only said that she's heard it before.
