"WARNING - PARKING FINE FOR STAYING IN CAR PARK"
I visited the Marriott in central Cardiff last weekend, the hotel itself was fine. However, we had difficulty getting into the car park without going through the bus lane which appeared to be the only access available. We called the hotel for advice and the receptionist told us to go through the bus lane as there was no other access. We did and have been landed with a fine from the council, as CCTV snapped us in the bus lane. We called the hotel expecting them to clarify the situation for us, only to be told there was nothing they would do. A quick Google search reveals that we are not the only customers left out of pocket because of this contradiction. We won't be staying there again.
"Birthday visit "
The hotel is in fantastic location, central to everything in Cardiff centre. My partner and I stayed for my 30th birthday and were upgraded to the executive lounge for free. The room was great and the lounge had free cakes, canapés, breakfast, and soft/alcoholic drinks (depending on times visited)! We also loved the pool, sauna, stream room and jacuzzi. Will definitely be staying again, worth every penny. Also, we arrived very early (10:30am) just to drop off our bags but our room was ready and we checked in! Excellent service. I even had a towel made cake in my room with banners and 3 small Marriott chocolates. Well done Marriott, keep it up! Our first choice hotel for Cardiff visits from now on.
"Expensive all around"
Easy to find and park (if you have a sat nav). Staff were welcoming and keys were quickly distributed thanks to pre booking in online. Rooms were OK but expensive for what you got. Should have booked a twin room as they are twin double beds and therefore the room much bigger too than a double room. Didnt eat at the hotel as the menu was somewhat fancy and over priced Breakfast was excellent However the sour note was that upon asking the best route to the front of the hotel from the car park I was told to exit the car park - turn right - turn right. This did indeed get to me to front of the hotel - however it also got me a £35 fine for using a bus lane. My error I know but why was I told to do that in the first place.
We've stayed in a few Marriott hotels around the world, we even had our wedding reception in one, but I was disappointed with this one. Pros: Just a few steps from the shops, restaurants, bars, etc. Spacious room which was clean and a great tele. Sian on reception was lovely when we checked-in and gave us free access to the executive lounge, as we were there for our anniversary. Cons: I forgot my dressing gown and was told (by reception) that I couldn't borrow a robe. Only guests staying in a suite can do that. We ordered room service and my club sandwich contained reformed chicken slices. Just what you'd expect at a kids party, not when you're paying £11. We wanted to watch a movie, but this hotel doesn't do this apparently (despite it being advertised on the tele and in the booklet in the room). Breakfast on the Saturday, no hash browns. Breakfast on the Sunday, no sausages or bacon. All of these items were eventually provided, but we had to wait for them to be cooked. Why isn't it someone's responsibility to ensure that the breakfast counter is well stocked' It was as if breakfast time came as a surprise. Ice machines conveniently located, but bring your own cup. The most annoying thing of all, the pillows. As soon as you lay your head on them, they become paper thin. So much for a good nights sleep! And I had neck ache the whole of the next day.
If it wasn't for the professional and helpful staff this would be a 1 star review. Booked the hotel to have some downtime and rest . Requested a quiet room on booking in writing . Was kept awake by a nightclub across the road until past 2am. This was a Monday night so God only knows how bad it gets at weekends ! Other gripes include : No pay per view movies despite being advertised in room documents and online No mini bar - not even a fridge No ventilation in the bathroom/ toilet- unhealthy and pretty sure against health codes No bath robes No in-room safe To get to the pool you have to walk through reception and the bar! Expensive parking I appreciate the staff giving a room discount after complaining about the noise. However, this is the worst Marriott hotel I have ever stayed at. It maybe ok by U.K. Standards, but pretty appalling for an international brand. Avoid.
