The Carvi Hotel is in a great location for exploring New York. Our room was compact as you'd expect for a boutique hotel in such a good central location. The beds were extremely comfortable. We had a small window which was fine as we were hardly in the room. Staff very friendly & helpful. We have stayed at other hotels in New York but would stay here if we visited again & would happily recommend it to friends.
"Average hotel at best! I would actually recommend paying a couple of hundred $ more to stay somewhere on Lexington Ave"
Firstly, I have to say that the location of this hotel is very good. Walking distance from Central Park and very close to both 51st & 59th Street subway stations...those two stations get you to so many different parts of the City. Unfortunately, that was pretty much the only positive with this hotel, which actually has all the standards that people in the UK might associate with a budget hotel chain. The price is not cheap enough to justify such a slack approach to decor and service. The windows are so thin that, if your room is at the front of the hotel, you will get very little sleep thanks to all the car and van horns outside. The windows were also very dark, with blocked views of the outside street. There was no restaurant or bar in the hotel and the restaurant opposite, which the Carvi give you a 10% discount for, was awful. We went in for coffee one day as we had to leave our room for 15 minutes (evidently being out of our room for 7 hours with a "service" sign on the door handle wasn't enough time for our room to be cleaned) and the place was really old fashioned and not very clean. One of our mugs had two bright lipstick marks on it!! In the hotel room, the old fashioned shower cubicle leaked under the door/screen each time we showered, meaning we had to waste towels drying the floor each day. When we checked out we were never actually asked how our stay was at any point. The final poor point of this hotel was that the wardrobe space is almost non-existent (space for about 7 hangers and no length for anything longer than shirts) and there are very few hooks elsewhere in the room. Even Travelodge hotels (with all due respect) manage to solve the wardrobe space issues better than this hotel do. Throughout our stay we had no real interaction from staff and the entrance area/lobby was about that same size as our room, which meant there was nowhere to relax. When we were waiting for our car to collect us at the end of our trip, we had to sit through members of staff moaning about not getting paid their overtime and there was literally nowhere for us to go to avoid these "private" conversations.
Hotel Carvi on East 55th St is a great place to stay for a few days while visiting NYC. Situated within walking distance of many of the Midtown sights including Grand Central, Times Square, Rockafella centre, Central Park and the shops of 5th Avenue. Staff on reception very friendly and eager to advise. No breakfast in hotel though Midtown Diner directly across road provides more than adequate meals at reaonable prices. Tube station on Lexington is just a 5 min walk away from which you can easily access all areas of the city. On arrival at JFK we paid $70 for a taxi to hotel. On return we paid $14 for tube which was probably quicker and just as convienient.
"Lovely hotel, great value for money."
The location is excellent as it is a short walk to the nearest subway station and plenty of shops and restaurants etc on 3rd Av. The roof top terrace is a nice touch, as the hotel does not have a bar we were able to bring our own drinks and sit outside, although a bit cold in November! The bed was very comfortable and air con quick to kick in when it got too warm. We chose a room without a window and this did not bother me as much as I thought it would although I can imagine in summer it may be a little bit dark. The hotel was very quiet and the staff were very friendly and helpful, our flight was not until late at night and we were able to leave our luggage at the hotel before getting picked up.
This hotel worked out well for me. I requested a quiet room and was pleasantly surprised! 702 was very quiet...but no one was using the roof top patio given the time of year. The room was a good size for NYC. Lighting wasn't great but otherwise the room is fine, beds were comfortable etc. The roof top patio looks very nice!
