"Cigarette smoke and poor info on website"
Looking forward to an few nights away - hotel info said jacuzzi or roll top bath in superior room with king size bed. When we arrived only a couple of the superior rooms have the nice bathrooms and king size is two singles bolted together. The hotel is 100% no smoking and ensure all guests know this. But with no provision made for smokers - it meant that throughout the night smokers stood outside my room smoking and talking. Complaints were made to reception in the early hours of the morning - who instead of moving smokers on - suggested we move rooms. To make the situation more infuriating the reception staff spoke poor English and just grinned at you when complaining - no action was taken. Room was large and clean.
"Edinburgh Old Style"
Brilliantly appointed antique style boutique hotel. Very comfortable great breakfast. Minor drawback some of it at garden level so a little lacking in natural light but otherwise amazing value for money
"Mid week getaway"
From the beginning we were delighted, it was exactly as I remembered from previously when I attended a function here. It reeked Old World charm and luxury of a bygone age with modern facilities to boot. The staff were all super, helpful friendly and good conversationalists. We used the dining room and the bar for food. We had excellent food, good choice of wine and beer, and it was excellent value for the centre of Edinburgh. We will be certain to return
"Excellent service and value for money"
Large room, bathroom with bath and shower. Excellent breakfast served by cheerful, friendly staff. Bar/bistro serving food until 10pm. This was once the home of Ernest Shackleton and although obviously modernised still retains lots of character.
"Old charm and quiet location"
We were in Room 64 Nimrod which was in the roof. It was a lovely large room with separate seating area and the bathroom was massive. The hotel is a little out of the city centre, but very easy to walk to and close to bus stops and because it is in a residential area it was really quiet. The hotel has oldie worldie charm and a proper log fire was so welcoming after a very cold day. The breakfast was great and waiting staff were lovely, although a certain receptionist could have been more welcoming and a smile occasionally would have been nice. All in all an excellent 3 night stay and we would stay there again.
