"Super Luxury and Inexpensive Off Season"
This hotel is next door to the iconic Grande Bretagne and is under the same ownership and management. King George is at least equally good, but priced slightly less. Every experience at this hotel was wonderful, including front desk staff, concierge and quite frankly everywhere you went in the hotel. Our room was upgraded, and was quite palacial with Lalique chandelier, the works' We ate both nights on their dining terrace, which looks over Syntagma Square, the Parliament House and the lit up Acropolis. Dining was slightly expensive by Greek standards but worth it to experience a new take on Greek food and we discovered wonderful Greek wine. I highly recommend this hotel.
"Quite A Luxurious Stay"
We had a wonderful stay at The King George Hotel in Athens. We wanted to get past our usual live out of a backpack, stay in a cheap hotel, have fun staying on a budget trip. We wanted a luxurious stay and we got one. They effortlessly picked us up very late at night in Piraeus and transferred us to the hotel where our rooms was ready, turned down and little chocolates and water set out for us. I couldn’t get the room I wanted with an Acropolis view-my fault I booked late but the room was extremely comfortable and modern. My only complaint was the shower in the bath. It was difficult for my not tall wife to get in and out of because of the high tub rim. Only complaint and I feel picky mentioning it. Absurdly gorgeous view of The Acropolis at breakfast on their covered roof top restaurant with impeccable staff service-we booked with a breakfast included-and beyond the beautiful buffet, you could order individual dishes from the kitchen. We had four breakfasts with them and after the first they knew our preferences for coffee and herbal tea and greeted us by name. (and were delighted to teach me polite Greek phrases and words.) The George is central to everything: extremely short walk to The Metro, little stroll to everything else-well 2 kilometers to The Acropolis but it’s through the pretty part of central Athens. The doormen and concierge plus the desk staff know everything and everywhere in Athens (and they understand the need for a little adventure as in point us towards The Plaka we just want to walk on this beautiful night and stumble on to a café/restaurant.) We decided to dine at The George’s own restaurant the last busy day in Athens. Again that gorgeous view but decidedly upscale with excellent fish croquettes for a starter to split (with Santorini wine-of course!) and extraordinary lamb with ancient flavors and a great fish dish. The service was beyond exceptional and having engaged the wine captain in a short conversation regarding Tsipouro found myself the benefactor of all his considerable knowledge on this distilled eau de vie which he had made at home with his father and an extra glass with a small pour of a six year old barrel aged sample of Tsipouro-gratis. His small treat for me being curious about this very Greek beverage. You won’t be disappointed with this hotel.
Good location. About a 10-15 minute walk to many tourist destinations. The room was fantastic, nice and roomy. Did not have a room overlooking the square, so it was quiet at night. Good SPG Platinum upgrade to a 2 room suite. Big bath area, nice tub. Separate dressing area. Great bath amenities. Staff very attentive, always quick to respond to any need or to offer help with reservations, transportation, etc. Enjoyed breakfast. Had dinner next door at Grand Bretagne which was pricey but excellent. Great views of Acropolis from both hotels but slightly better at GB. Would definitely stay here again!
"Charming hotel with central location"
This hotel is centrally located on Syntagma Square by Parliament. We upgraded to a larger room. Not much of a view but the beds and furnishings were classic and comfortable. The bathrooms were split: one room with a sink and tub/shower combination and one room with a sink and toilet. A huge breakfast buffet was included in the price. It was served on the rooftop terrace. My jaw dropped that first morning: an unobstructed view of the Acropolis. The breakfast was very good with a selection of pastries, breads, cheese, cold cuts, fruit, eggs, sausages and of course yogurt (your choice of sheep's milk or cow's milk). Service was attentive and friendly. And since it is the King George, a large pot of tea was available. The hotel next door, the elegant Grand Bretagne, is owned by the same company. The price of our room included lunch for two at the Grand Bretagne. The lunch was delicious. Service was excellent. The front desk staff was friendly and made recommendations for dinner. The bellhops and doormen always had a smile- even when lifting our heavy luggage.
"Loved the King George!"
Excellent location and beautiful rooms with luxurious baths. The restaurant has an amazing view of the Acropolis and the food was excellent at dinner, and a very good breakfast buffet. Would definitely stay again.
