"Needs some TLC! "
It felt very much like this WAS a nice hotel to stay in once upon a time but unfortunately it felt like no one really cares for it anymore. My club room was ok, it was dusty, and the toilet wasn't clean which was unacceptable. The decor needs updating or at least to cover up the signs of wear and tear. Heating was a bit of a nightmare, after calling down to reception to get it switched on, it was either on really hot or off and cold! This hotel COULD be really pleasant to stay with a little bit more investment. The staff were really friendly and helpful though. Also PAT test labels like the one on the hairdryer in the attached image with a really expired date doesn't help matters! A real shame.
"Two nights away from it all."
We have stayed here before so thought it would be nice to come back again. Sadly this visit was not as good as we thought it would be. We ate in the Restaurant on our first evening, I ordered the Aberdeen Angus Burger and found a mouldy tomato top on the plate which I felt should not have been there and should have been disguarded and put in the bin. When this was pointed out to the Waitress she took my plate away and came back to tell us that the Chef said it was not mould but the green colouring from the stalk. afraid we have to agree to disagree about this, needless to say there was no apologies and full price taken for the meal. The first room we were given was 414 and when we went in to watch a little bit of TV and get into bed we became aware of a noise that seemed to be getting louder. We turned off the TV and it sounded like a old bomber airplane was about to land on the roof. We rang reception who said they would send the Manager up. A minute or so later our phone rang and they informed us that the noise was coming from the Extractor from the Kitchen, they offered us room 333 on the floor below which we accepted. Nice and quiet so a good nights sleep was had. No WIFI IN THIS ROOM. Breakfast in the morning is a help yourself buffet. There was a waitress who checked our room number off on a sheet then she said " sit where you want ", then she disappeared. There was a Menu on the table with lots of different things to choose from, sadly this was not the case when we went to get something to eat. There was NO Cranberry or Tomato juices. There were 2 fried eggs at the hot plate that looked like they had been there since it opened at 6am, one piece of Black pudding and 2 hash browns. There was plenty bacon, link sausages, mushrooms and beans. As the Menu offered eggs the was you want them, I was going to ask the waitress to bring me some scrambled eggs but she was nowhere to be seen. Two ladies arrived and stood for a while so I called over to them that we had been looking for the waitress for a while ourselves so they may as well come in and get a seat. My husband had finished his breakfast by the time she did appear so I asked if I could have a fried egg( thinking this would be quicker ) but no. One of the ladies was most disappointed as there was next to nothing Gluten Free. She was eventually given some toast and jam which they said would be free of charge. The breakfast the morning we left was much the same as the day before except this time the Coffee machine stopped working so we had to sit and wait again for the mysteriously missing waitress. Did think that the cost of the breakfast at £12.95 was a bit of a cheek especially for what was on offer. Breakfast is a added extra so I recommend you save your money and eat elsewhere. Our overall feeling is that the hotel is getting a bit dated and the bedrooms especially could do with a huge upgrade. There did seem to be a overload of Staff but non were there when they were needed.
A friend and I have been twice in the last two months. Once for afternoon tea and once for an Itison meal. Our afternoon tea was ok. The sandwich selection was a bit of a let down though. 3 filling options, however they were mainly smoked salmon with one of each of two other fillings. Neither my friend nor I care for smoked salmon very much. As there was no menu to view before hand we couldn't inform staff of this. Tonight we had a meal. Starter was nice. Our mains of the plaice goujons, with chips were not so nice. Plaice hadn't been skinned and was visible through the breadcrumbs, it was also very strong smelling/tasting. The chips were also a bit undercooked. My friend couldn't eat her creme brulee. It was full of lumps for the small portion it was. A member of staff asked about it, we told her we weren't satisfied. She apologised and said she let the kitchen staff know. When we went to pay our bill the same member of staff took our payment and didn't mention anything after 'supposedly' speaking to staff. All in all, a very disappointing experience and we won't be back.
"Well located with huge rooms."
The hotel was well located, just of the main shopping area. I stayed in a twin room with my mother. The room was huge, with 2 double beds and plenty of space for clothes. The room décor was a bit dated and the bathroom was a bit tatty, but clean. The reception and bar areas were lovely & staff friendly. We ate in the bar area on one occasion and the food was lovely.
"Very decent but expensive"
I've had to wait long time until I've went to my room. Staff wasn't helpful. Room itself was excellent though, very clean, very comfortable and nice atmosphere. Price of food was very expensive. The location of hotel is good as well.
