"good location, nice hotel"
The hotel is very easy accessible from the main road, only 15 min drive from the centre. got free update to club room with nice view. Room is big and bed is comfortable, although décor is a bit dated and can do with upgrade. room/bathroom clean, although we didn't have top up on toiletries on the second night.
I stayed at the hotel Friday 25th November with 3 other friends, we had 2 rooms located on the ground floor. Check in was easy with helpful front of house staff. The taxi into town was 40 minutes late, but the Reception staff called twice on request to see where it was. Saturday morning we all sat in one of the 2 rooms allocated to us, before showering and getting ready. When we went back to the second room a member of house keeping was already turning-over the bedroom for the next customer, when i told her that we were yet to check out and need to use the bathroom facilities. Her response was shouting at us stating there were hardly any possessions in the room and it was already cleaned for the next customer, apart from the bathroom. We apologized that she was mistaken and asked her to check with Reception to ensure we hadn't checked out, she slammed the door in our faces and proceeded to shout and scream that she had a "guts full" and that she had cleaned the room. When i opened the door a gentleman in a white shirt told us to use the room and tried to 'laugh off' the house keepers actions. This rude and unprofessional member of staff tarnished the stay and reputation of the hotel, as the housekeeping procedures are clearly incorrect or need updating to ensure rooms that have not been checked out are not disturbed. On check out the Reception area was busy and we just wanted to leave the hotel after the rude and disrespectful encounter, so didn't have a chance to speak to a manager.
"Excellent dining! "
We turned up without booking and had a warm welcome and delicious Sunday roast. Excellent value at £12.95 for two courses, and what a great two courses they were! Coupled with friendly service, I cannot recomment highly enough. We will definitely return.
"A very enjoyable stay "
We had a very comfortable stay at the copthorne, our greeting on arrival by Nathan was friendly, quick and efficient. The reception area is homely, an amazing Christmas tree and real fire roaring. Our room on the 5th floor, a connoisseur room overlooked the lake. It was warm with a decent shower, and spaciou. We had soup with fish and chips in the bar, which was absolutely delicious and served by friendly bar staff. Full English buffet breakfast plenty of choice, parking onsite. Its out of the city centre but a delightful non-corporate hotel, would stay here again and recommend.
Stayed for one night and first impressions were good with an impressive foyer and bar area. Our room was ok with a comfy bed and a nice view out over the lake but, was a little dated with dark furniture and cupboard doors not closing properly. Nothing too much but needs a good makeover. We both had the afternoon special offer of "pie and a pint" which was good value as the pie on it's own was dearer than the offer price. Evening meal was ok in the restaurant but with very little in the way of ambience and if it was a special occasion which it no doubt would be for some people at the price it would be a disappointment. The bar staff need extra training as they don't seem to know how to pour a pint of Guinness or a full pint of lager and there never seemed to be enough of them at any stage anyway. This was a day when there was football and rugby on in Cardiff but the bar was in no way packed so surely there should have been extra staff available'' Some members of staff seemed to disappear when there were a few people waiting then return out of the blue when the queue had gone. My heart went out to the friendliest member of the team Ashleigh who had only started 3 days previously but was time and again left to fend for herself when a queue appeared and her colleagues disappeared. If I was put in that position I would have resigned on the spot but, she soldiered on and was so nice and chatty no one complained as they could see her lazy workmates were more than happy to skive while the "new kid on the block" did all the work. Breakfast was much the same with most items almost cold and a long wait for our tea and coffee (ordered on arrival) which turned up 3 requests later after we had finished eating. This place could be so much nicer with a bit of a makeover and some staff training although I do think that some of the staff had probably had plenty of training but just don't like work at all. Nowhere near a 4 star hotel at the moment and I would not recommend especially as we paid £119 for our night plus meals. A total of well over £250 and just plain and simply not worth it.
