"Some R&R whilst visiting friend"
Warm, informative welcome from reception. Phyllis was immensely helpful and encouraged charming Karl to give me a hand with my myriad of bags. Room large, warm with very comfortable bed, great view (day and night) and splendid bathroom. Enjoyed plentiful and tasty breakfast. Hotel on doorstep of Merry HIll Shopping Centre which had all the shops you would want and plenty of cafes, snacks, etc. LOVED the facilies, swim, steam, sauna, jacuzzi and Sam gave excellent deep tissue back massage which I thoroughly recommend after a long drive! I would definitely stay here again. This appears to be a very friendly part of England.
"Desperately in need of a refit"
This hotel has huge rooms and the bed was comfy but it's like you step back in time when you enter it. It doesn't look like it was decorated since the 1980s and is looking pretty shabby. I felt it was expensive for the quality of the hotel. Breakfast was included in the price but this was pretty average with rather cheap looking food and the coffee was lacking freshness or flavour.
"In need of some TLC!"
I'm sure this hotel was lovely when it opened but its now in need of some TLC. The hotel is set in a nice location given the surrounding area, its by the canal which was lovely to walk along. The staff were all very nice and friendly. Our room was a bit of a disappointment, I think we would have been impressed ten years ago but it could do with some updating. It was a decent size for a double, with tea and coffee facilities, and a large bathroom, but that is all the good points. The carpet was threadbare, the wall around the window was cracked and damp, the pillows smelt grubby/old, the bath and taps could have done with a deep clean and the light in the bathroom was constantly flickering, felt like we were at a disco! Breakfast was good for £8.95 each, if we had to pay the full amount I think it would have been over priced. Overall, if they spent a bit of money updating the bedrooms then I'm sure this would be a lovely place to stay as the staff clearly enjoy their work and do their best to make sure you have a pleasant stay, but until they do that, our room certainly wasn't worth what we paid!
"To be improved & refurbished."
I com here maybe 10 times per year for business since 2004 and even after all these years there's just 1 receptionist who recognizes me when I arrive. Most of the staff still ask you the same questions and are not interested in customer friendliness. Breakfast is average, coffee is really bad. Rooms are ok but need to be refurbished soon. Heathclub ok. Location is very good. Some small changes in staff attitude could make a big difference.
"Retro and renaissance modern "
I enjoyed this hotel more than I thought I would. A fairly retro feel in a fairly modern hotel it felt a bit Art Deco with touches of renaissance. The rooms were a little dated but clean, spacious and functional. Staff in the bar and restaurant were friendly and the breakfast was good. If you like porridge it's up there. Views are lovely and although in quite a built up area it overlooks a canal. My visit was further enhanced by a free upgrade to a suite (so thank you for that Copthorne) it was much appreciated.
