"Good Hotel - Parking an issue."
We stayed here on Saturday 18th February. I fell ill in Birmingham and was due to drive home that same day but I decided to book this last minute as I was too unwell and in a lot of pain. I rang the hotel before our arrival to enquire about parking. I was advised that parking was located below the hotel. We arrived at the hotel which was very easily located, headed to the carpark and was rather annoyed to find that it was full and closed. I returned to the hotel and had no alternative but to park on the ramp where it says 'No Parking' I had to risk being ticketed because I was in way too much pain. I was advised to move the car but the nearest car park was at the mailbox. I struggled with walking but managed it in the end and had to pay £21!!!! Not happy with that at all! Anyway, onwards. Our room was fine, we had to remake our bed as all the sheets were coming off. Loved the little touches i.e Pillow menu, Lavender spray for sleeping easy. It was nice to have a comfy chair and footrest too. We were able to heat the room to our desired temperature too which was a blessing. I had everything I needed to help with how I was feeling. The bathroom had lovely big white fluffy towels as well as shampoo's, creams etc. The bath however was VERY small. I am 5ft 1 and I had to sit up! My partner is almost 6ft and struggled a lot!! The wifi didn't work when we got in the room. I had to report it to a technical team but was given the conference wifi code so all was OK there. We had a knock at our door by housekeeping which was a lovely gentleman who asked if we were OK for towels. He brought us more towels. We got talking and I explained I wasn't well and he brought me extra tea, coffee and hot chocolate bless him. My partner and went to the shop bought my favourite milk which we were able to put in the cooler in our room. The views from the hotel we crap! Utter building site but I won't hold that against the hotel. Birmingham is regenerating and it's just unfortunate that they are building right next door. It has nothing to do with the hotel and there was no noise from the site (possibly due to them not working over that weekend'!) My only gripe was the TV! As we were there purely for a rest and recovery we relied heavily on the TV in our room. There were very few channels. The TV was buzzing and cracking and kept changing channel. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to purchase a film or extra channels. Just glad I took my laptop! The corridors were VERY noisy at night time and was woken by doors opening, closing and slamming all night. Overall, I would stay here again but it wouldn't be my first choice of hotel. I think there are better hotels around but it's far from the worst I have stayed in.
Booked to stay here for a Birthday trip through IHG being a member and this is by far the worse Crowne Plaza we have stayed at. We booked using the advance saver rate and paid £110.15 for a standard room then noticed the price had dropped to £85 and the club room had also dropped to £121. I emailed and queried this as I haven't saved any money with the "saver rate" and asked to pay the extra difference for the club room and was told "no" I couldn't! We arrived and asked again and were told "we're sorry about that, we can upgrade you". We then ordered room service as you gain reward points when charging to your room, and was again told we couldn't charge to the room because they did not have my card details! Strange, as I booked the room with my card!' We also had to ring down for items missing in our room. Friends were also staying in the hotel for my birthday ask for the dry cleaning services they provide and were also told " No we cannot do that". During the evening at the bar for drinks, my friend knocked his drink and it got on to his shirt, to which one of your rude bar staff said " It doesn't matter, you wont pull anyway!" Totally unprofessional. The aircon is also unbearably loud so we just had to turn it off. We also rang to arrange a later check out until 2pm which is free for IHG member and again were told " No, it will cost £20" We again questioned this and even the information form in the room stating the benefits, says its free for members! To which the reply was " It changed in January" Again very strange as we had just stayed in the Crowne Plaza in London the week before and it was free, such as all others we have stayed at. Staff did not seem to know or care so we begrudging just paid it. Overall a very disappointing Birthday trip with rude, untrained staff.
"Excellent Business Stay"
Friendly staff, reasonable rooms a little tired in decor but had everything a traveller needs. Clean and tidy, USB connections, Thank you!. I loved the gym space, enough variety of equipment. Easy access to city centre, shame about the construction works as a little difficult to find your way. I have booked again.
"Good hotel in a central location."
I've stayed at the crowne plaza many times before. In general it is better, cheaper, and less pretentious than the other 4 star hotels nearby such as the Malmaison and Hyatt. Check in was friendly and efficient as it always is but once we got to the floor we were staying on the signs guiding us to our room sent us the wrong way. We were in room 814 and getting out of the lifts the sign told us to go left when we should have gone right. This is a minor thing but could be easily rectified by the hotel and does seem a bit strange that the signange is wrong. Having said that it is the only thing that was wrong with our stay and we enjoyed a very comfy bed and nights sleep.
"Perfectly serviceable, if slightly gloomy, business hotel."
Nothing wrong here, staff is pleasant, rooms are clean, bathrooms tidy but small. The restaurant offers plenty of adequate choices at dinner and breakfasts are pretty good. Everything feels quite dark and not much light enters the lobby or rooms. Next door there is a building site where they are driving piles. I expect the new building will steal even more light. Would come again as reasonably priced for business, not for pleasure.
