"Friendly doorman, excellent bartenders, updated room"
I was traveling alone and felt very safe at this hotel. The doorman was always out front to greet me and open the door, even when it was super cold. The bar always had 2 people serving so never a wait and it was open until 1am. Lots of people just hang out in the bar area at night, which is large with many sitting areas, tables, comfy benches, etc. Not a party atmosphere, but just people relaxing after business or in my case, hospital stuff. The rooms are large for New York and nicely decorated. The business center is fairly large as well. Just FYI, the way to cool down your room is to open the window. They have a nice sundries shop, but just across the street is Dean Reede (Walgreens) which has everything from hummus, fruit, to advil and beer. The subway is right on the corner, which I took everyday. Shopping is close by but I never had time, maybe when I return. Really great hotel and staff.
We stayed here for 2 nights after a cruise...we stayed right in Times Square before the cruise...this hotel was located in a great location close to 5th Ave shops, Central Park and Times Square. The rooms are very small and need some updating, but overall it was a decent stay for the price we paid for NY standards. We didn't have the breakfast so I can't comment on that. Overall, we we're happy with our stay. We stayed over President's Day and I'm so glad we didn't stay right in Times Square as we walked over at night and it was so crowded you could hardly get around.
"Avoid this property"
Although the staff was quick to try to resolve problems, there were a lot of problems during a recent stay. There is a fire house down the block so choose a room on the south side. The property is old and although the rooms were "renovated", new tile in the tub doesn't make up for plumbing that worked better in the 1970's.
"Family trip with children "
Perfect location for the cost. Everything is walking distance. Hotel had a weird smell when they were cleaning. The children enjoyed themselves since it was there first time. Everyone likes it and only didn't like the smell when cleaning it was super strong. But I would recommend the hotel at least you know it's clean!
"Amazing location, good sized room (for NYC)"
It takes a lot for me to give a five star review but, well, a family trip to NYC for President's Day just went that well. And the hotel, while not a five star facility, fulfilled its requirements and then some for our trip. Stayed two nights with family - two adults two kids - in a suite room. Yeah, they charge you to leave your bags - but it is a measly $2 per bag. Not awful for a chance to get out in the city. Check in was uneventful and we were able to get cookies for the kids the two nights we were there. Considering that we had brought plenty of snacks and even ate dinner in the room one night because the kids were beat, the housekeeping staff did a great job cleaning. And wow, the location. 6 line is right below the hotel with the E a block away. One transfer to get to the Museum of American History (Upper West Side) and one transfer to get to Battery Park for the Statue of Liberty. American Girl/Rockefeller Center/Lego Store all easily walkable. Look, this isn't a resort. And if big rooms are your mandate - well NYC isn't the place to be. But for the price, location and rooms, I highly recommend checking this place out. We'll keep this place on the list for our next visit. My few quibbles would be this - I found the thermostat tough to change, a few more staff around at the 3PM check-in time would be nice- I saw one woman close her position at 3:30 with a five person line while another check-in person was on the phone for some reason. Left one person actually checking people in'' Really'' Certainly, if a light sleeper - you do hear other rooms/doors/showers in the background. Was on 7th floor and had no issues with road noise like I saw in other reviews.
