"Great hotel, terrible experience with getaroom, com reservation and Trip Advisor"
The hotel is great. Beautiful rooms and grounds. Good location. Attentive service. The one weakness is the standard of the quite expensive dining --- it's really not top tier and you are far better off trying the nearby restaurants in La Jolla or even Del Mar for lunch on the beach. I do want to record my horrible experience with getaroom.com and Trip Advisor that brokered the deal. I paid in full two months in advance for a five day reservation, and received written confirmation from Trip Advisor. Six days before my trip, I was advised by e-mail from getaroom that ``We regret to inform you that due to an internal error, the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is unable to accommodate your reservation.'' They offered me an inferior hotel in town (and lied about it being a Kimpton Hotel!) which of course I didn't accept. I suggested some acceptable alternatives which they refused to do and then refunded my money, leaving me with no accommodation 5 days before my trip. I ended up making my own reservation costing me about $1000 more. This is the second time in three months something like this has happened when using Trip Advisor (last time when I was routed to Otel.com). I strongly suspect a `bait and switch scam' and will never use Trip Advisor or its surrogates to book anything again.
"Quiet, beautiful oasis in La Jolla"
A lovely luxury hotel and spa right on the main drag in La Jolla going by UCSD, Salk, Scripps, etc., and nice escape from all the billionaire supercars trying to mow you down all the time on N Torrey Pines Road. Service is impeccable; buildings, grounds, and rooms are done in nostalgic Spanish mission/rancho style. May be showing just a little bit of age these days, but still peaceful and elegant, and many times a relative bargain.
"Great if you are visiting a UCSD student"
Estancia La Jolla Hotel is located directly across the street from UCSD campus dorms. So if you are there to visit a student it is very convenient; however if you are there to enjoy La Jolla and the coast, you will be disappointed. The Hotel is a 15 or 20 minute drive from the coast and is very isolated from everything other than the hotel itself and the campus. The Hotel is very nice but expect to walk long distances from the lobby to your room, depending on where it is located. Rates are on the high side and there are additional fees, for parking and a "resort fee'" It has a nice pool and hot tub, I didn't have the opportunity to try the spa services. I will stay there again if I visit my granddaughter, who is a student at the University. However, it I simply want to visit La Jolla, I will find a Hotel in town on the coast.
"Stop over on our way down Pacific coast"
Hotel in nice grounds, with swimming pool. Friendly staff, comfortable room. Rather isolated, too far from La Jolla town or beach. Breakfast was of poor quality, stewed coffee and stale croissants, unless one wanted the full American. Valet parking at the hotel expensive.
I stayed here with a friend and we had a lovely stay. We were in one of the bottom rooms and it was very quiet. The beds were incredibly comfortable and we both slept great. The towels were also the softest towels I've ever used in a hotel. Every day there were more bath and shower products left in the room, which was a nice perk. The grounds were lovely, clean, and very spread out so it always felt private and not crowded. The spa was excellent and we wished we had more time to enjoy some of the services. I had a great facial from Melissa, I think, and a fabulous massage from Nahja, who was interesting to chat with. I wish we had used the pool, but we went one afternoon and it was a bit crowded so we decided to skip it. All the staff at the front desk were fabulous, in particular Lilliene ( not sure of the spelling) was very helpful. We loved, loved that there was a shuttle and only had to use an Uber once when we stayed out past the shuttle time. Matt and Mac, both drivers, were excellent. Matt waited for us at the Torrey Park and then drove us to a wonderful restaurant and made sure we got in okay. We felt very well taken care of during this trip! We ate at two of the restaurants, Adobe, and Mustang and Burros. Our first dinner didn't go well. My friend had to return her meal, which was salty and she was missing spinach. She got a salad instead and that was then missing feta cheese. However, the staff were very eager to make things right and my salad was great. I ended up eating it a few times. Adobe was okay. I had oatmeal and it was pretty basic. It took a while for us to get our checks.
