We went couple of times to this hotel, mostly for one or two nights. First of all I love the outlook of the whole hotel (but I really do love gold). The staff at the Frontdesk was at every visit very nice, as well as the room service. The Hotel rooms are looking noble, quite big with a king size bed and a big writing desk. The In Room Dining food was ok, not very good but not so bad as well. Could be better. All in all I would come back every time. It is also quite nice as it is so near to the Mall of the Emirates
"Ultimate luxury hotel"
What a fabulous hotel. From the moment that we checked in with the lovely Patrick to breakfast to checkout our stay was smooth and all the staff were exceedingly helpful. We were upgraded to a superior room and the name really speaks for itself. On the top floor we had perhaps one of the most spacious rooms we've ever stayed in (and we are seasoned travellers!). Our view was on the other side of the hotel so we were not able to see the Dom however at night it was blessedly quiet. The front desk were great at answering all our questions during our stay and helping us to break some large notes. Breakfast was in a beautifully designed old-fashioned room which kept very much in feel with the rest of the old-school luxury surroundings. If I had one niggling point it was that the hot food did not get replenished as quickly during peak times, meaning that if you came after everyone else had eaten there was little choice there, but there was always a plethora of cold meats, cheese and fruit available along with pastries and cereals. We did find on the second day that there was a slightly smokey smell in the lift (more like cigarette smoke) which we forgot to mention to the reception. One of the lovely touches in the hotel is that they have actual keys for their rooms instead of just keycards. They are smart keys so you must put them in the lock and leave it for two seconds before turning which takes some practice but we loved the nostalgia of having a little letterbox and that we didn't have to worry about loosing our key as whenever we went out we left it behind the desk for safekeeping. The hotel is minutes away from the main train station and within easy walking distance to the old part of town and all major attractions. We would certainly be staying here again on further visits to Köln and will be recommending it to anyone travelling there.
"Luxury at a steal!"
Every aspect of the hotel defines excellence. The location is on the city's fifty yard line, everything is walking distance, including the Cologne Cathedral and central train station at the doorstep. By any measure this property is under priced.
This hotel is very well located right in front of the cathedral of cologne and near most historical sites as well as shopping. It has two restaurants on site. It is an elegant hotel and customer service is great. The rooms are spacious but spare and could use some renovation. breakfast on site is overpriced but there are plenty of options nearby. The afternoon tea takes place in a lovely setting. The bar downstairs has a piano player every evening which sounds wonderful. There are new spa on site but a small fitness room and a steam bath.
The Excelsior Hotel Ernst is excellent in all respects. The Grand Deluxe Double (king bed) room was very comfortable and a good size. The service from the staff was first class. We enjoyed dinner in the Hanse Stube for our wedding anniversary. On that day returning to the hotel in the afternoon, a bottle of sparkling wine and a nice card was waiting in the room, compliments of the hotel. It was very much unexpected and highly appreciated. The location of the hotel is perfect; close to the Dom and the railway station. It would be our first choice if we return to Cologne.
