Stunningly beautiful hotel in the heart of Cologne. Train station literally around the corner and the cathedral opposite. The attention to detail from the staff was first class. They remembered your name almost instantly and in the evening the bed was turned down, slippers set out plus water and a glass by your bedside. The rooms were well maintained and clean and the bed was probably the comfiest we've ever had in a hotel. The pillows were super and you even had several choices of pillow if desired. Wide selection of both hot and cold food for breakfast plus beverages. We are already planning our return for the same time next year!
"Overall very good but a few niggles"
Brilliant location. Reception staff very helpful and courteous. We were on the 5th floor in a superior room. Room was very good with lovely quality bed-linen and towels. Housekeeping was excellent. However when we were shown to our room it had an overwhelming smell of drains - and the same with our friends room next door. It was soon solved by running water in all the bathroom appliances to seal the traps - we assume the room had not been used for a while hence the problem. We would have expected, in a hotel of this quality, for the rooms to have been checked before occupation. The Hotel does not provide any tea or coffee making facilities in the room This is very disappointing. We have got used to British Hotels which now tend to have Nespresso machines in each room! The concierge suggested he arrange for a tray to be sent up and this arrived promptly with kettle, cups and sugar but no tea or coffee. We bought some coffee but the first time we used the cups the housekeeper took them away and didn't replace them! We resorted to ordering an afternoon cup of tea each on the balcony overlooking reception. This took 25 minutes from us sitting down to it arriving (and only then after I had reminded the waitress that we were still waiting to order), and then arrived with no milk or sugar which took another 7 minutes to appear. To cap it all we were given a bill for 19 euros - really - for two cups of tea!!! We had breakfast in the restaurant one day. A very extensive choice but nothing that I haven't had in a good British Hotel and at 34 euros a piece not really worth it we thought. And the coffee was truly terrible. So, in summary lovely hotel but need to sort their beverages out!
"Book the renovated rooms"
We were lucky enough to be placed in a renovated room. It was great. However, our friend paid the same and was placed in one of the "classic" rooms and it was very poor... small room small bed, bad lighting, old bathroom. The staff was friendly and anything from the minibar is free.
This hotel is amazing! Location is great - across the street from the cathedral, close to the water, close to the Christmas Markets. The room was clean, large and wonderful! Tons of storage, incredible shower and tub. Staff was beyond friendly - it was all perfect! I highly recommend it.
"Classy, friendly and well located"
This is old world atmosphere with new world efficiencies and comfort. Breakfast extensive and in a well appointed setting. Concierge very very helpful. We went for the Christmas markets and there they were, right out the door with the Kilmer Dom and Hohenzollern Bridge.
