I was on the 4th floor which is the "modern" floor so if you want that historical rooms then request floors 1-3. The hotel is lovely, staff is very nice, and breakfasts are delicious and generous. The hotel is a UNESCO site and restored in a great way. The room I had on 4th floor was very spacious as well with a living area.
"nice room, poor gym and breakfast"
The good part first: We had a very nice room with a comfirtable bed and beautiful furnishing. The bathroom was very clean and we apreciated the "rituals" amenities. But the breakfast was really disappointing. There was no buffet which is not bad per se but the food we ordered came in very small portions and we had to wait about half an hour for it. Also only one really small glass of orange juice and bad filter coffee or tea was included, everything else costs extra. And then there is the "gym" which basically is a joke consisting of one bench with a few very light dumbbells. The small pool was very cold so there was not one person using it. And finally the sauna was turned off during the regular hours.
"Old school hotel, classy and well located "
The hotel is a very old school style - that's obvious from the website and reviews here - so if you don't like that sort of thing then book somewhere else! The hotel building is elegant and well maintained and has a tremendous history. It doesn't really have any grounds but the communal spaces inside are lovely. The staff are formal and very accommodating. They speak English well and are anxious for everything to be just right. Our room - 306 - on the second to top floor overlooked the front courtyard. It is an executive room but very spacious. Plenty of room for bags. Giant bed, firm mattress but very comfortable. Shower is lovely. I would prefer that the hotel switch to a toiletries brand that is not tested on animals however. The breakfast is special, you order from a menu rather than the usual buffet. The standard was high, and also this approach reduces waste. Eggs and pancakes were excellent. Well located just a few minutes out of the old town. A lovely stroll through the park and you avoid the noise and tackiness of the tourist bars in the old town. A lovely stay!
My husband and I stayed in this hotel and we were extremely pleased with it all around. Set in a magnificent old mansion, the hotel exudes elegance and refined comfort. The room we stayed in was majestic with soaring ceilings, beautifully painted. The staff was formal and superbly hospitable. The Gallery Park is within walking distance of Old Town and other areas of interest. The morning buffet was wonderful! Highly recommend the Gallery Park!
"Definitely the place to stay and come back"
We were staying in this hotel in the middle of August and experience was great! Really very nice hotel in the historic building but very good renovated. The design is done in a perfect international manner but with the touch of Latvian atmosphere. Located in a very center, it's just 5 min walk to the Old City, but very quit and comfortable. What we liked - is that the rooms are really big! And very cosy breakfasts served a la carte. After a long walk under unpredictable Baltic weather it's was very good to visit sauna and the pool. Really the place to recommend, to visit and to come back!
