"Quirky, unique hotel."
I stayed here with my husband in September and the hotel is located in the former French concession. We stayed for 13 nights to visit our son who is working in Shanghai. The hotel is very unique and has lovely Art Deco features. The location is great, loads of bars and restaurants nearby, and there is a lovely park just down the street. The staff were very polite and helpful overall, specially the breakfast staff.
"'Different' - but perfectly ok!"
Stayed for one night on a last minute booking. The hotel is in a good location and just a minute's walk to the metro. I booked an Art Deco suite. Reception were friendly and quickly processed me on arrival. The room was surprisingly large, although a little on the 'dark' side given the dark timber used for all aspects of the floors, screens and furnishings. Lots of storage space, good air-con, masses of fluffy towels and a reasonable selection of amenities (including bathrobes) for the bathroom. While the bathroom lacks doors it was still relatively private given it was angled away from the main seating area and bedroom section. The basics of safe, complimentary water, tea and coffee and slippers were all provided. The wifi was free but a little patchy - but that is not uncommon in China (this was perhaps a tiny fraction on the slow side though). The bed was a stand-out - beautifully comfortable with generous bedding and great pillows (the 'marshmallow' type that you can massage into the perfect shape). The sitting area was a little awkward - a strange lounge that didn't look so inviting and a mis-matched ottoman. I didn't check the television to see what channels were available. Breakfast is by way of voucher from reception which you then hand to Kevin's Cafe. The breakfast options looked good but I only took toast and coffee (which was excellent - freshly made barista-style). Overall I thought it was good value if you enjoy the type of architecture and decor. There are more 'modern' hotels, but this is a matter of personal style and choice. A deposit of RMB100 was required in cash during check-in. This was promptly refunded on check-out.
"Wonderfully preserved Art deco hotel in wonderful location"
I mainly chose the hotel because of its practical location for my purposes. The location turned out to be practical, too. And, the neighbourhood, with the close-by park, further increased the value of the location. The hotel in itself is a real gem. We had a large and artistic room with a real working desk, which I needed, and a bathroom which we relished with. Very friendly staff not all of which communicated in English though. Near-by also interesting restaurants and shopping centres.
"One of the most beautiful Hotels"
If you are looking for somewhere to lay down, relax and enjoy the silence. .. this is the place! With outstanding design, great hospitality and close to the metro and great restaurants and bars. I'm sure I'll be back.
"An interesting hotel"
Firstly, this place is not difficult to find since it is next to Xujiahui and Hengshan Park. I was given the room just above the Keven Cafe. The street is busy and there is constant honking. Not loud or intrusive since the windows are closed. You can see people walk by on the sidewalk and the room gives you the impression you are staying in your own private apartment in Shanghai. Heavy curtains are available to cut out all peering eyes to your room if you feel insecure. Bedding is comfortable. Very modern with an sound station which can be connected by Bluetooth to stream your store music from your smartphone. Wood floors give it pleasant touch. The bathoom. Now that is something to talk about. A clawfoot bathtub sitting in there. A wooden vanity with the sink built into it. I hope they maintain it well. Bathrobes are supplied so that you don't expose yourself to the outside. since there is no door for the bathroom. The hotel isn't terribly expensive but it isn't very cheap either. However, the character it exudes is rather charming. Breakfast at the Keven Cafe downstairs is basic and it helps charge you up for the day. The surrounding area is filled with lots of eateries. My particular favorite is the 南京汤包馆 at No. 641 Jianguo Road or rather the intersection of Gao An Road and Jianguo Road. 建国西路641号 (高安路) Excellent xialongbao for less than DTFs prices. It is near to the Former French Concession but not exactly in it. You can actually walk over and explore the area. However, it is along Heng Shan Road which is is for all intents a place filled with bars. A lone man walking along this road in the evening is usually a target for bar "promoters" asking you to come over to their bar to check out their massage offerings that promise a "happy ending". If that is not your intent, just be firm and walk on. But overall, it is an excellent stay for any occasion and even for business.
