"Average room but with excellent service"
Reception did their best to make us feel comfortable, so friendly and helpful. Our train tickets were sent to that hotel and told us that it arrived 3 days earlier and handed it to us. The doorman, bellboy to the breakfast personnel were all friendly and delivered excellent service. The swimming pool and gym are located at Sofitel, it's located at the same compound, 2 minutes walk. Grand Mercure must be grand in the old days, the hotel is quite dark, carpets smells old, and the rooms are dark and boring. The beds were alright, the bathroom had a small tub and shower, the water was good, with good temperature. Our room was located at the parking area, and we had to wear earplugs to muffle the noises every time a car parks in. The breakfast was huge, a choice of Continental, Chinese and cereals. There is also a coffee machine if you want a good espresso. People are very helpful and friendly. Guest also varies from locals and group tours from other countries. I am giving this hotel a three rating, and not a 2 due to their wonderful staff. The hotel needs a renovation on its rooms and carpets.
"Very Nice Hotel"
Stayed here for three nights as part of a China trip. Its a very nice complex of hotels sharing with two other luxury hotels on the site. Easy to walk to it from the train station even with bags, was a good location for us for getting around, an easy walk to the Muslim quarter. We arrived early from an overnight sleeper, we had asked for an early check in, had a hour wait on arrival but they were busy the night before and turned it around as quickly as they could. Lovely decor inside, really nice room, we didn't eat/drink there so no comment there. There is a really nice restaurant called the Cyclist beside the hotel, check it out. We used the pool in the Sofitel, not fantastic, left it pretty quickly. Nothing else stands out, it was a very good Mecure hotel, no negatives.
"Good, once you're in!"
We booked this hotel through Booking.Com and a week before arrival received a confirming email. On arrival at 7 pm on a Sunday night the reception had no record of our booking. They even had the nerve to suggest we should contact Booking.Com. I asked if they had a room, which they did, and I had to suggest they give us a room, at the price quoted by them to Booking.Com. I was told I would have to also pay the additional taxes and I agreed. We were in, and were I believe then upgraded. My complaint is simply that the reception staff should have sorted out the problem more professionally and smoothly in the first place. Once in we thoroughly enjoyed the hotel, liked the Sino Russian architecture, including a lovely breakfast room. it is very convenient to restaurants and particularly Muslim Street.
This is a slightly dated hotel but it is clean, you can walk to a lot of the main sites and also can use the pool/gym at the Sofitel as well as their free bikes. Breakfast was good- has a wide range of options. Overall good value for money.
Arrived at the hotel evening time, very clean and spacious room, clean and very present bathroom. Breakfast was nice, no gym facilities, but guests are allowed to use the facilities at the Sofitel east wing on the same complex of 3 hotels with good opening hours, the pool closed At midnight, not sure about the gym. Really helpful staff.
