"Not what we expected"
I can't really say anything good about this hotel, we had a bad first impression and it didn't get any better from there. When we first located the hotel there didn't seem to be anywhere to safely stop in front, and so two of us jumped out of the vehicle a few blocks down. We went in to ask if there was a loading zone to drop our bags and where the closest car park was as we had been lead to assume it was right next door. The desk clerk looked at us like we were crazy and replied no, there was absolutely no where to unload our cases, we must find a parking garage and bring them from there. The closest parking seemed to be around the corner and across the street, but then the exit when on foot was actually two blocks down, a long way to drag our luggage from. Located right in the heart of the Vieux Port, the area it's self is quite noisy, smells badly, and doesn't seem too safe. Although there are a multitude of good restaurants within an easy walk, it's not really that close to any of the other attractions in and around Marseille, and front desk staff were not at all helpful in directing us. We thought our room was to come with a limited view of the water, however all we looked out on was a dirty courtyard and other people's apartments. The bathroom was in a state of disrepair with the wall in front of the tub actually lying on the floor. We reported this to the again unfriendly desk staff, who said they were aware of the problem and it would be fixed that day. It was not. A very disappointing stay, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
"Just 3 star"
Any problems with this hotel are not down to the staff but to the Management, who's ideas on grading this hotel are unrealistic. It is admitted that photos and descriptions of rooms do not always reflect reality. I was shown to my room on the 4th floor, which was a very small double, with plain walls and what had been described on booking as superior 'with a view' which turned out to be a window, from which, if I stood on tiptoes, I could see tiles of the room below. However the young man on reception did offer to arrange an upgrade to a room overlooking the harbour and took me to see one. He could not have been more polite and helpful but beware bookers! unless 'with harbour view' is specified then anything is described as 'superior'. I agreed to pay the excess for a harbour view room, which was good, but descriptions and pictures of rooms I noticed, do not always reflect their actual condition and size. My room was kept clean, the duvet cover and towels changed each day but general areas such as lose plugs, tile grouting, paintwork, carpet etc. need attention. I suggest that Management visit their hotel and do a snagging list in each room, redecorate everywhere and especially in public areas, fit new carpeting. It may then be rated at 3 star, in my opinion. Overall, the hotel benefits from its location but given competition in the area it needs to be realistic about what quality customers would expect to find in a hotel rated 4 star. It is not this one. However, its employees do their best to make a stay there as comfortable as possible, with how it is. From the Eurostar Gare St Charles station, take line 1 metro toward Vieux Port (2 stops). When you emerge from the station (stairs and esculators) look diagonally left and the hotel is across the square, next to McDonalds. Bus 82 (Pharo Catalans) from stand 26 at the station also goes to the same point at Vieux Port, fare E1.90. Take care crossing the road around the square, as on each half of the road traffic runs in BOTH directions - use a crossing. There are several boat trips from the harbour here and fishermen's stalls in the morning. An open top city tour bus runs from across the harbour, too. All in all the Grand Tonic Hotel is fine for a visit to Marseille and in a great location for everything but do not go expecting the 4 star rating it gives itself. It needs money spending on it.
"Great location but take a trip to Cassis"
We stayed here for 2 nts. We arrived early morning but were able to leave our bags at the hotel and come back in the afternoon to check in. Rooms were very clean and spacious enough for France. Bathroom was quite compact & the built-in hairdryer did not work. Reception gave us a replacement dryer but it was less than effective. The air conditioning was old but adequate. It is pushing it to say this is a 4star hotel! The location is ideal in the old port with access to the many restauranta & bars. The main stop for both open top bus tours was closeby - one day ticket is more than sufficient. There is a big ferris wheel at the port & it is worth a go @€7 per adult. There is quite alot of traffic around the port but the drivers were very courteous and stopped to allow us cross at any junction. We went to Cassis for the day approx 30mins from Marseille. We got a taxi there (€60- 4 of us) It was a beautiful tranquil town with a lovely port (with only pedestrian access) and even a little beach. It was a very pleasant unplanned trip and well worth a visit to just sit back and watch the world go by with a glass of wine. We couldn't find a taxi so waited for the bus to go back to Marseille - this was a lengthy process and only for the kindness of "Chantal' and a local bus driver we might still be waiting for the correct bus. It certainly made the journey memorable but I would recommend you do a little more reaearch than us!
Not really a 4 star hotel , more a 3 star . I stayed on a bed and breakfast basis . For what I paid it really suited me especially the location , right on the port close to everything . Breakfast was basic . If you want something a bit more fancy then this is not for you . Clean rooms ,fairly modern , hallways in hotel scruffy , but staff friendly .
Locationwise it does not get better. Right in the center of the Vieux Port. Perfect for exploring the city. The hotel is clean, comfortable and the staff is extremely friendly. Rooms are small but enough and bathroom is just right. Reasonably priced and convenient.
