"A handy place to stay"
Had a night away for an anniversary treat. This was a deal which included dinner, bed & breakfast. Very large room and bathroom, quite pleased with what we got. BUT if you go in winter, take a dressinggown or similar, the room had the smallest single radiator, and it was behind the curtains when closed, also no heating in bathrooms, apart from towel rail. The food was good, and it is right opposite the railway station, so handy if you don't want to drive. Down side, no parking although car parks around ranging in price from about £5 up to £16 for overnight stay. Very easy to walk into city centre.
Had a lovely time, hotel convenient to railway station.Had cream tea on arrival, room lovely.Evening meal excellent, breakfast lots of choice with excellent service. All round a great experience, would certainly recommend hotel to family and friends
"Not bad, but didn't meet expectations"
Visited Chester last weekend, and decided to stay here due to the proximity to the station. That is a definite plus point for the hotel. We booked the Hallmark Getaway deal, which got us 20% off our booking and a free meal at the Kings Grill restaurant, part of the same complex as the hotel. Although the meal was nice, we did still have to pay for wine, so maybe it should be made more clear that this doesn’t come as part of the deal. Our room was the deluxe superior, which is within the upper-mid range of room choices, meaning that even with our saving, we were still paying a fair amount. To be honest, we’d expected better. The rooms are set up so that when haven’t inserted your room key in the wall panel, the heated towel rails are turned off. Not too surprising, but as there were gaps between the panes of glass and window frame in the bathroom, it meant that our room very quickly lost heat. So, whenever we returned from anywhere outside of our room we had to wait an hour or so for it to return to a bearable temperature. The smoke alarm – although clearly there to save our lives – was not especially conducive to a good night’s sleep, as it flashed and lit up the room every 20 seconds or so. I asked the staff on reception about this, but nothing was done, nor any reassurances given, so we simply dealt with it for the rest of our stay. Our bathroom looked lovely on the surface, with beautiful white and grey tiles, and large separate bath and shower. However, the water in the shower took about 2 minutes to get to temperature, and even then it was a bit of a dribble. It wasn’t all bad – the bed was very comfortable, and there was little by way of noise to wake us up – but all of the small touches which really separate out great hotels from good were not present here. The breakfast was fairly comprehensive, and not bad quality, but I’d advise going fairly early as there seemed to be a bit of a mad rush toward the end of service on both days we stayed. If you’re strapped for cash, or looking to splash out on a hotel where you feel like you’ve been provided value for money, then I’d suggest looking elsewhere.
"New Years Eve "
We returned to The queens for their New Year's Eve gala dinner dance after 4 years absence. Previously we attended for many years with friends. We were concerned for two reasons firstly that due to ownership change the evening would not be to the standard enjoyed in the past and secondly the fact that we as a couple were attending on our own. Firstly although some slight changes the evening was top class wonderful value for money. The price has not changed in years but quality remained it now serves a set menu rather than a choice however the meal was exceptional and probably the best we've enjoyed here. All inclusive inc champagne at midnight means no one is thirsty far from it. The bacon baps after midnight is a nice touch although I was far to full to attempt although my husband did ! Secondly we were concerned that we would be "stuck in a corner on a table for two" but cleverly all the Two's were placed on their own table but in the same area this allowed for a more friendly atmosphere. The staff were attentive and polite. We loved the evening and will return. We live close so did not stay overnight but have previously although not on a New Years Eve, we found the rooms comfortable well decorated and clean. The breakfast was excellent.
"Christmas Party In January"
Attended our annual Christmas Party here on Jan 14th. Check in was efficient and staff really helpful on desk. Had a family room as 4 sharing ( 2 double beds) The room was huge and in the older style that gives the hotel it's unique character. The room had everything we required with a large bathroom and lots of space for 3 women to get ready to party! The party night was as always a big hit, so many thanks to staff working that night, you all kept us very happy. No complains from any of our large party. We were met outside the breakfast room with Buck's Fizz-great treat when you are not driving!! Breakfast was amazing, lots of choice and all really hot and fresh. Will not hesitate to stay here again and thanks to all the team for making yet another years party exceptional.
