"Charming old hotel"
We stayed here for 2 nights. We had a de-luxe room with two big beds. The room was modern in style and somewhat dark decorated - in contrast to the exterior style of the hotel which is an old building. The bathroom was rather small. The staff was very nice and helpful. The breakfast buffet very good.
"Nice hotel let down by poor restaurant experience"
Hotel is lovely although room was very dark and we seemed to pay a heavy premium by booking in advance. Hotel is in nice location and reception were really helpful and friendly. However, restaurant was very poor. We decided to eat there as first night in Amsterdam and felt easier - restaurant looks really nice. However, service was dire - took forever to be served, waitress split our wine over the table and instead of apologising just shoved a serviette over the wine spillage, food order was wrong and was just plonked down in front of us but couldn't be bothered to complain as it took forever to find anyone to serve us. Not surprisingly we went to other restaurants from then on. Go with the hotel - avoid the restaurant.
"Pleasant hotel in great location"
Stayed here for the weekend with a friend. The hotel is in a grand, architecturally interesting building and was well presented and decorated with some beautiful original features on the main stairs. The room itself was quiet with a comfortable bed and thick curtains that kept the room dark. The decor in the room was starting to get a little faded (scratches in the bath, ok but not great shower), but nothing terrible. Overall a great choice and in a perfect location. If you arrive from the airport, note that there is a bus which gets to the Leidsplein much more directly than getting the train and walking.
This hotel is perfectly placed for first-time visitors to Amsterdam - major areas of the city can be covered on foot, and great museums, restaurants and shops are steps away. Hotel front desk staff members are knowledgeable and service-oriented. Exterior balcony rooms facing the canal are worth the 30 Euro up-charge from interior rooms, especially in warmer months. Rooms are clean and well-appointed, though small with well-organized (yet limited) storage. Beds and linens are comfortable with crisp sheets and comforter covers. Bathrooms are reasonably-sized, though the tub requires a big step up and over to get into the shower. Slow WiFi is free of charge; faster WiFi is available for a modest rate. As other reviewers mentioned, there is a long-term roadway project in process on the street in front of the hotel - noise is minimal, and there is minor hassle in crossing the street. Overall, that should not deter you from staying at this hotel.
for the sake of the supplement take the superior room with balcony as the original one offered to us was so dark it was depressing, we moved to # 116 which was lovely room bright and airy thanks to very pleasant check-in girl - breakfast is excellent in a lovely room and all the staff were terrific
