This has to be one of the nicest Hiltons I have stayed in anywhere. Facilities are nice, food is good (not necessarily a strong point of resorts run by business travel chains), service is excellent, and the pool and ocean views are top notch. This is a great way to spend those Hilton points you've been collecting on business travel!
"Be adventurous and take the bus!"
Stayed at the Hilton Los Cabos for the second time in January 2017. The hotel is quite nice; very clean, comfortable rooms, well maintained, 2 nice pools, pleasant beach, great gym, and 2 nice tennis courts. We prefer the rooms at the tennis court end of the complex overlooking the smaller pool (low room numbers like 6001, 5002, 4003, etc.); great views and these rooms have a microwave and dorm refrigerator, unlike other rooms elsewhere. The staff is attentive, professional, and friendly. The morning breakfast buffet is nicely done, lots of fresh made pastries and a wide selection of offerings. Overall this is a top notch property. You can walk quite a distance along the beach, but the sand is very soft, making for slow going. Alternatively you can head out of the resort on the frontage road, cross under the freeway and walk through the lovely golf course. There is a steep hill nearby (small flag on top) and a well marked path leads to wonderful views in all directions. The Hilton is located between San Jose (nearer there) and Cabo San Lucas. As a result it is very quiet and uncrowded, but also somewhat inaccessible without a car. Taxis are readily available, but quite expensive (min $40 to go pretty much anywhere). However there is a bus stop directly in front of the property and for 30 pesos or less ($1.50 at this writing) you can go into San Jose or Cabo San Lucas. There are multiple companies serving this route, but the Ruta del Desierto (bus with orange nose, purple body) and the Baja Cabo line (blue bus) are seen most frequently, typically every 5-8 minutes. There are also occasional white rattle-trap municipal buses, and sometimes a nice green coach from another local line. Put away your fears, the buses are normally clean, air-conditioned, and comfortable. Drivers are usually helpful and will let you know where to get out, if you give them some idea where you are going (try out your Spanish, write it down beforehand, or just watch the GPS on your phone and push the buzzer when you near your destination). Exact change is not required, but get real, and bring some pesos along. You can flag the bus virtually anywhere, no need to be near a stop! Once in town you can either walk or try an "urbano", a municipal bus (typically converted school bus) for 10 pesos or less. Somewhat confusing on routing, but doable. We also took the Ruta del Desierto bus to Cabo, changed to the intercity bus, and spent the day in Todos Santos, an hour plus distant. Total cost of about $20 per person, versus the $100+ for an organized tour, and really a lot more fun. There is a new restaurant complex El Merkado about 5 minutes distant by bus (towards San Jose). Tell the driver you want to go to the Hampton, or the hospital, both of which are in the same complex. El Merkado is a two level complex of restaurants, reasonably priced, with a large selection of great and inexpensive food. You can get Mexican, sushi, a Greek gyro, vegetarian, pancakes, or whatever. Well well worth the visit. The Oyster Bar on the upper level has terrific tacos. The smoked tuna was wonderful, as were the octopus, crab, and red snapper. Four filling tacos each plus a drink, about $12 per person. Okay, my nitpicks about the Hilton property (which overall is terrific). The restaurants are pricey. Backs on the balcony chairs are too low, and rather uncomfortable, even with the provided cushion. The wood and webbed chairs inside the units are also a bit uncomfortable; the back is too upright. There are two very well maintained tennis courts, but the hotel is not interested in matching up guests to play on them. We asked several times for this simple service, but our requests were dismissed out of hand. Very easy to do -- a clipboard, guest writes name, room number, and dates of stay. Anyone who wants to play looks at the list, makes calls and sets it up. Simple, but no one was willing to undertake this for us.
"Excellent service, good restaurants, and beauftiful views"
We visited at the beginning of January for 5 nights - we upgraded our rooms to the Vista Club - which I recommend at high season - you have excellent views from your upgraded rooms, you have a special area at the pool, happy hour with small bites, and guac/chips at the pool each day. Every single employee that we encountered - which was MANY - were excellent, courteous and attentive. Astrid - our 'pool concierge' was excellent, there were SO MANY employees - and all of them were super nice. The food and the service in the restaurants was very good. The prices for drinks and food were fair. Our other choice for this vacation was Hawaii - and we would have spent double the amount on food/drink if we had gone to Hawaii. The fitness room is nice and clean also - and always attended by very helpful employees. I would go back here for sure. The only downside is that it's a $25 cab ride each way to San Jose and $30 each way to San Lucas - if you're only there for a couple of days - that's fine - and for us it was ok because there were 4 of us. We all had a great time and would visit again. Whale Watching and Snorkeling recommendation - Pez Gato - Catamaran out of San Lucas - the hotel concierge can arrange this for you however it is not one of the options in their concierge 'catalog'. We wanted to go on a smaller catamaran and PezGato was excellent - we saw plenty of whales. (and we saw a few whales right from the beach too!)
