We stayed at the hotel overnight before our holiday. The hotel was very clean, reception staff friendly, polite and smart. Our cases were taken from our taxi and left at reception. Good selection at breakfast, nicely presented and warm food. Very clean bedroom, comfy bed, tv, safe and storage if staying longer than one night. Clean bathroom with lovely white fluffy towels and toiletries etc. Only complaint we had was the room was freezing, a small portable electric convector heater was on in the room but it did not throw out much heat, we just presumed there was a problem with the heating and went downstairs to have a coffee. We would use this hotel again if leaving on an early flight.
"A hotel that has seriously deteriorated"
This review is an amalgam of two stays, one in early January, one in early February. Over the years the Hilton Manchester has always been a go to property - sound and robust, clean and friendly. But last year, my stays have progressively migrated to the Radisson Blu. A combination of high rates at the Rad, and need for a centrally located room, meant I booked two stays here for work in the past month or so. This is a hotel that has gone seriously downhill. The welcome was, as always, friendly. But some of the predominantly European reception staff are impossible to understand. But on both occasions I got checked in quickly, and then the fun started. The stay in January was awful. Despite my preference for a king, I was allocated a double. But the room had been designed as a king. The bedside lights were physically fixed to the wall where the king bed should be. But Hilton had squashed in two doubles. This led to a fundamental issue. One bedside light overhung the left hand side of the bed. It was fixed. You could not move it. And the other bed had the opposite issue - the light overhung the right hand side of the bed. It was late, I didn't really compute how bad it would be. 9 times I hit my bed. I tried both beds. And when I did sleep, I managed to wake myself because the pillows pressed up against the room light switches (again perfectly placed for a king), so one stretch or move of the head meant all the lights came on. I've been diamond at Hilton for 10 years, and this was probably the worst nights sleep in the worst designed room I have ever experienced. It stank of grabbing an extra buck because its an airport hotel and they can. My discomfort was noted, so when I returned in early February, I was allocated a king. The first room I was put into had zero wifi - not a single device (and when I travel on business, I have several) would connect. So I was moved. The replacement room appeared to have come from the 1970's. I cannot remember when I last saw a glass fronted wardrobe. And the wifi was little better. In 30 minutes, I was disconnected 8 times. Impossible to work, and that's a problem when you are on a business trip. The towels also appeared to have come from the 1970's - rough, and pretty much threadbare - not what I expect in a Hilton. There is no lounge, so elite members get a free breakfast in the main restaurant. That was interesting. Again, friendly staff, but only if they notice you. On two of my 3 mornings, the waiting staff did not note my arrival despite me being sat by one of their colleagues. Consequence' No hot drinks. And whoever cooked the sausages needs shooting - they were more incinerated than cooked. Evening dining was a disaster. Previously there has been a comprehensive bar menu. If away a lot, there is a certain comfort in sitting in the bar, with some good food watching sport or the news. But no more. All you can get is pizza. I asked the serving staff if there was a full bar menu, but was told you could only get the wider food menu if you sat in the restaurant. I spend 200+ nights a year in a hotel. I am sick of hotel restaurants. And why is a pizza more expensive if you eat it in the bar rather than restaurant' They come from the same oven, and are served in, effectively, the same room. I thought I'd have room service as the room service menu looked good, Then I saw the tray charge. Daylight robbery. Dick Turpin must be this hotel's GM. The tray charge is one of the highest I have seen anywhere in the world (Lagos excepted) - it would have made a cheese omelette £17!!!! In the end I put on my coat, walked to the terminal, and had a Greggs. Its very disappointing. This was a good hotel, but it has turned into something akin to a rip off operation. It stinks off trying to extract as much cash from guests as possible whilst delivering as little as possible. Why else would you squeeze two doubles into a room that is obviously configured as a king' Why else would you charge more for a pizza in the bar than the restaurant' I'm afraid I will not be back. I'll stay in town at the excellent Doubletree at Piccadilly, or the Marriott at the Airport or Victoria & Albert. I'm a Hilton loyalist - they are my preferred chain by a mile. But this is a poor excuse for a Hilton property. Contrast this to the brilliant Hilton Euston I stayed in right after my second stay in Manchester, It was like comparing a Travelodge with a Hilton, not a Hilton with Hilton.
"Great place to stay before flying."
We have stayed several times before flying from Manchester on the fly and park package. Excellent food and accommodation and great value for money. Very helpful staff. Will definitely stay again on our next trip away.
"Pre flight overnight"
Ticked all the boxes for a one night pre flight. Professional welcome and check in. Room well appointed and clean. Bed very comfortable which delivered a good night's sleep. There was an anomaly with the car parking arrangements whilst on vacation overseas. Was assured that the car was allowed to be left secure in the Hilton Car Park. On arrival however it was announced that the car was to be moved off-site by a third party to what was described as secure parking. Document to be signed abdicating the responsibility of Hilton and keys to be left. Not happy about this last minute announcement however it came to be the case that the car was allowed to stay on site and for me to retain the keys. Guess it must have been some sort of mis communication amongst the reception team.
"Shame a few things let it down"
The hotel is nice and first impressions are good. The room had thick dust on all ledges, pubic hair on the bath in 2 places. The bed was very comfortable but the room was so cold all night we couldn't sleep. The breakfast is lovely with plenty of choice cereal, fruit, cooked breakfast, fruit juices etc just a shame that there was a black hair in my breakfast. When I told the waitress there was no apologies or offer to get anything else. Not what I'd expect from the Hilton. Transfer to airport is great and no hassle so stressless.
