Al Ponte dei Sospiri hotel is located in the heart of Venice, 30 metres from Saint Mark's Square, in front of Bridge of Sighs.

We booked online without really knowing anything about the hotel. Only the location...... The place was fantastic value for money considering the location. 50 yards from the beautiful Piazza st Marco. Very clean, excellent breakfast at the sister hotel only a 20 meter walk away and very very helpful and friendly staff!
Horrible Hotel Picked this hotel for its location, on small canal near San Marco square, and view of the Bridge of Sighs. In both regards, it delivered as promised. On other points, it was possibly the worse hotel I have ever stayed in. The mini suite itself was furnished with very, very worn sofa and chairs. The tables and canopy bed were very cheap and wobbly. The mattress itself on the bed was hard as a rock. So hard, that I couldn’t overcome my jet-lag since if I stayed in the bed longer that 4-5 hours, I would get a back-ache! Not good The safe was not attached to anything, you could pick it up and walk out with it. When I expressed my concerns at the front desk, I was told, “We see everyone that we let in. No one is going to steal from your room. It is safe.” Really' Were they going to cover the replacement of money, credit cards and jewelry if it was stolen from the room' Of course not! Unacceptable. The windows and doors in the mini suite were not insulated from the noise outside. I could hear passing motor moats at all hours throughout the night. Could also hear people talking as they walked by outside the hotel starting at about 5:00 AM. Not fun. The staff at the front desk were dishonest and tried adding upcharges for a water taxi from the hotel to the cruise port. They asked for cash payment only, and on the transfer date the rate increased from 95,00 euros they originally quoted to 121,00 euros “to cover taxes and fees.” They initially were trying to refuse to give me a receipt, and when I insisted, they reduced the rate to the original 95,00 euros. Shame, shame! The breakfast room at the sister hotel was another matter. The food was mostly inedible, powdered eggs, stale rolls and cakes. We finally stopped going there as there was nothing good to eat. I stayed at this hotel as a recommendation from American Express, and they will be hearing from me as well. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. The negatives far, far outweigh the positives at this hotel.
"Never ever again"
My wife and I went to check in to the hotel, and we were greeted by an incredibly rude person, who seemed completely put out that we wanted to check in. The lift could only fit my wife and I, the porter and our bags had to be bought up separately. The porter seemed friendly and we tipped him. He was the best employee in the hotel and was always friendly towards us. I assume he told the person who checked us in that we had tipped him, as they were much friendlier when we came down to explore Venice, he seemed completely insincere when asking if the room was ok. The next morning the breakfast we ordered arrived, it was stale and cold and basically inedible. After breakfast my wife took a shower, I then took a shower. The waitress knocked on the door while I was in the shower, my wife asked if she could wait for a minute, while she was dressing. The waitress barged in and said she could not wait any longer. This was completely unsatisfactory and embarrassing for my wife. I got out of the shower and we noticed the shower had leaked through the wall. We told reception the shower had leaked, they sent the porter to look at it. I have no idea what they expected him to do since he was not maintenance staff. He laid towels down to sponge up the leak and told us we would need to wait an hour, again completely unacceptable. The staff did not offer to move us in to another room until we complained. Then begrudgingly the agreed. There was evidence of wood rot where the shower had leaked through the wall previously so clearly this wasn't an isolated incident. At the end of stay we checked out, and thought we could put the whole experience behind us. They also tried to charge us for a couple of items we did not purchase from the mini bar. They then charged my wife's credit card 3 days later without her authorisation because they claimed they had made a mistake on our final bill. We will be persueing this with the credit card company as it was not an authorised charge. Our stay was like an unfunny episode of English sitcom faulty towers, I half expected John Cleese to appear somewhere in the hotel. If I could I would give the hotel 0 stars for the rating, I will be telling all family and friends not to stay in this hotel if they were travelling to Venice.
"Bad experience overall"
I am sad to say overall it was a bad and unpleasant experience. All of the staff were incredibly rude (I can see from previous complaints the hotel has put that this is due to a language barrier unfortunately it wasn't this, they were all rude and unhelpful) The room we were put in was cold and on the first floor despit paying for a suite and it being our honeymoon. Further to this the shower leaked after my husband and I used it right though the walk into the room (I was worried due to electrical wiring in the wall). I asked them to check it and they were unhelpful and said we would need to wait for a maintenance man. I had to them insist our room was change as I was concerned about safety knowing this is a hazard as I work for an electrical distributor in Australia. The food each morning was both stale bread and fruit salad out of a can. They were very rude when collecting the tray this came on as both my husband and I were getting dressed I asked them to come back and then refused demanding I give it back straight away. On check out they attempted to bill me for things we didn't have from the mini bar which I had to dispute. Several days later they charged another unauthorised charge to my credit card for supposed underpayment even though the bill was paid in full on departure. As you can see from my other posts we have had a great time on our trip and I love to recommend things for other travellers to enjoy as much as us, in this case I hope my review stops anyone having our experience
We really enjoyed our stay and would like to extend our thanks to the wonderful, friendly staff who made us feel like friends. The location was fantastic...very close to Piazza San Marco and the Bridge of Sighs. We enjoyed the sounds in the morning as we wanted a Venetian experience and it was wonderful to hear Venice waking up...the sound of bells first thing...the gondoliers getting ready...it added to our experience! Breakfast was good...we could either choose room service or pop across to the sister hotel for buffet. We chose buffet...selection of pastries, drinks, yoghurts, meats, cheese, cereal etc. We enjoyed it and there was plenty! Hotel room was very nice...very clean with daily linen change. It did get quite warm at times but I guess it is better than being cold! All in all we had a great stay here and we would definitely come again!
