"super service and friendly staff"
Especially liked the Coral Grill and the attention paid to us particularly by Monica Cruz. View from the restaurant is spectacular Whole resort is very clean , beach is one of the best we have visited . Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Not our first visit here ad we will definately be back.
"The jewel from Barcelo at The Mayan Riviera"
All Barcelo properties are a guarantee of service and confort, but The Maya Palace goes an extra mile, with acres to all other properties you can enjoy whatever else is going on at the other hotels, plus you get premium Liquors and excellent food all at a very competitive price. The rooms are very clean and beautifully furnished, and staff will go out of their way to help you. The food at the buffets is abundant, well varied and good quality, and the specialty restaurants are a delight, I specially recommend Capri, the Italian restaurante (at the Maya Colonial resort if I am not mistaken), you can get your reservations at guest services right at the Palace.
I guess it's just me, but I'm not a big fan of resorts. We were there for a wedding. The rooms were lovely, and the staff was very friendly. The food, however, was just mediocre. There was a lot of it and it was always available, but it was so, so average. Even in the upscale restaurants...So if you're not going for the food, ok. And I also felt semi-trapped in the resort. There were no towns close by.
We just returned from our trip to Barcelo Maya Palace. We had an overall great time but they could improve in some areas. Check in...we have stayed at MANY resorts and this was our first time at this resort and the check in took about 40 minutes...the longest we have ever experienced for our Mexico experiences. Reservations: The restaurants ALL require reservations for dinner(with exception of buffet) and I highly recommend going straight to the left of the check in to make them because they fill up fast and we could NOT get a reservation for the Japanese and we were there for 4 nights and were staying at the most expensive of the Barcelos(not sure exactly why the palace is more expensive btw) we did go there one night at 5pm and told them we would like to wait to see if someone was a no-show and as luck would have it we did get in but understood that is not common. ALL the other resorts can eat at the Japanese which is probably why reservations are tough Restaurants: Japanese our favorite and second would be the Italian(both located in the mall of the resort which is in the middle of all the Barcelos. Brazilian was good too. Service: The service was extremely good of all the waiters, staff, and bartenders. They work VERY hard and tip a few dollars if you can each day. Beach: Beach was beautiful, spacious, and clean. The ONLY shocker was there is no wait staff on the beach or a beach bar. We would get up early to reserve beach chairs seats close to the pool bar so we did not have to walk far. It did not ruin our trip but was the first time we had experienced no staff on beach and would think at the palace you would receive that type of service. Size: This is a big property with all the resorts attached but organized well as the sidewalk by the beach will guide you to all the other resorts and restaurants. We have been to Iberostar Paraiso and thought that this resort was way better organized and easier to get around. Plan on walking ALOT(comfy sandals for dinners at night...heels are not advised) There is a shuttle every 20 minutes but we never used it and we seemed to get to places quicker by walking. Distance: It is about a hour drive from airport so be prepared for that. Cleanliness: VERY clean resort everywhere! Other resorts: We were still puzzled at exactly why we paid hundreds more for this resort compared to the others...nothing stood out as unique or different than the others and the friends we met on beach in front of were all from the other resorts so wristbands not enforced for that. Drinks: Drinks were wonderful and good pours! Overall, it was a good experience but not sure if worth the long drive, long check in, and money to not get reservations at certain reservations when getting there in the afternoon and have 4 nights of notice.
"Huge property, great resort - TONS of options"
A quick run down of the Barcelo Maya Palace: Location: Located almost exactly one hour south of the Cancun airport in a perfect location to offer tons of exciting activities. Close proximity to Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Xel-Ha, Puerto Aventuras and XCaret. Check-in: No real issues, I have seen worse and had better. The line moved fairly quickly with a knowledgeable staff working the desks. There is not a separate check in line from any other guests with general questions or needs which seemed to slow it down a bit. Really I think it is all about luck and the timing of your arrival. If a big bus just pulled in with a lot of drop offs, clearly you will wait longer. No worries, there is an air conditioned lobby bar right around the corner and plenty of seating. Room: The room was very nice and spacious. It took care of all the critical basics - air conditioner worked well, plenty of water pressure with no hot/cold issues, maid service daily, mini-bar, etc. The only issue with the room was the very uncomfortable some what rubber sheets. Over the week I got used to them but the first couple of nights were tough getting comfortable. Grounds: HUGE! I cannot begin to express just how large the grounds are and how much walking you can get in on any given day. There are shuttle buses from each lobby but the wait can get lengthy. Walking along the beach path seems to be the quickest way to cross the property. Take the time to explore the resort and find each of its hidden gems. The resort has more pools than I could count and a beautiful well groomed beach. You should have no problems finding what you are looking for - you just may have to look for it! Three days in I found a quiet and secluded adults only pool clear across the resort. Had I not been out exploring I would have never known it to exist. Food and Drink: Overall, everything from a food and drink perspective was above average. Most of the dinners were amazing and even the restaurants on the non-palace side were ones I would want to dine at again. My only issue was with finding food at certain times. It may have been due to the low season, but the overlap between meals seemed off. It was tough to always find a buffet open instead of being sent back to one of the snack bars. The snack bars were still ok but the buffets were so much better. Breakfast was very good as well. As for late night food you are pretty much stuck with bar snacks. The Sportsbar seemed to be the only place with food super late. Which of course if you are dining at midnight chances are anything will suit you! Drinks were what I would consider standard for a resort. Seemingly watered down and extra sweet. Just ask for a double and it will be fine. Certainly no shortage of alcohol choices at this resort. Be sure to find the pirate ship snack bar in the middle of the property. A very cool look and feel to a resort experience. Service & Entertainment: The service across the entire resort was always very good. At no time over a full week did I run into any resort worker who didnt say hello or flash a smile. The entertainment crew kept you posted on events and invited you to participate in a non-pushy way. They seemed very happy to be making sure you had a good time at whatever speed you choose. The nightly shows were hit or miss. Keeping up with every resort I have ever been to, there is of course a Michael Jackson night - which is getting a little tired. The Circus show was the most impressive. The shows, at least on the Palace side, were a bit dead. This may have been due to it being low season and lots of weddings going on which had their own parties to attend. The nightclub was also hit or miss and I think this depended on what group was in town. On some nights there were hundreds of people, other nights barely 20. There is a shopping mall and sports bar located in the middle of the property which offers more options for adults and kids. Bowling, mini-golf and a waterpark (while not included) are available for a small fee. There is also an on-site dolphin show near the middle of the beach.
