"Luxury stay in a medieval city"
First Impression: getting to the hotel is difficult as we were following the GPS directions and it was giving me directions to enter a walled city, which is not allowed for private cars. We had to ask for directions to a local. Once that it's figured out, you have to drive to a specific area within the first wall of the city. In this unpaved road there is someone from the hotel that will give you further instructions regarding the parking. You have 2 choices, the public parking which is free, open, about 15 minutes walking from the hotel or a private closed parking (recommended) which is about 20€/day and about 5 min walking from the hotel. Either way the hotel will pick you up in a small bus (small enough to drive through the gates and the intricate small streets of the old town). Once you pass the second gate and wall it feels like you are transported to the medieval times for real. The Hotel is within the walls of the city and it is just amazing. Keep in mind this is a very old historic hotel with all noises, cracks and feel of a "medieval" hotel, but that's is what we were looking for. Elevators are small and old, but being a historic building, that can not be changed. The hotel looks extremely well, clean and well kept. It feels like you are staying in a Disney medieval times theme hotel but for REAL! Hotel's location could not be better. Your are next to the historic church and next to everything but not near the old town center to be bothered by the crowds. Keep in mind that this is an expensive hotel but worthy of every penny. We did not have dinner in the hotel restaurant which has a Michelin star. The menu looked very good but $$$, as expected for a 5 stars hotel. Personnel: Hotel reception personnel was very professional, friendly and helpful. All employees were always friendly and respectful. Language was not a problem as they were fluent in Spanish and English. Room: we had a superior room with a view to the garden and city wall. It had a balcony with a spectacular view of the city. The room has that old historic hotel feeling in a very good way. The layout is very good, spacious and comfortable. Cleanness was excellent. It had a safe and a minibar with the usual amenities. Wifi is included and it was fast. Bed mattress was probably from medieval times as it was that bad! and the pillows were very hard. Besides the bed, the room was impeccable. Bottled water is included and complementary. Bathroom: spacious and very clean. Very good quality toiletries which are replaced constantly. We still have a body lotion bottle :) Breakfast: breakfast was not included in our reservation. It is on the expensive side 30€ per person. It was very good but not excellent. Waiters were very friendly and helpful. Overall: if you end up in Carcassonne this is a must stay Excellent hotel, unforgettable experience. Highly recommend
"Luxurious comfortable hotel"
We caught a taxi from the Railway station which took us to the barricaded entry to the old city where a lovely man took our bags and transported us up windy narrow roads to the Hotel. The hotel is operated as a McGallery by Sofitel and sits as one of their luxury range. We arrived to find that our room wasn't ready, however our bags were taken and we were invited to explore the city while they organised the room. The room itself was lovely with a large king size bed and a bathroom with double basins. We booked in to its restaurant for dinner where we had the Magret Canard for two. The restaurant has a one star Michelin rating but were were somewhat disappointed with it as while the duck was well presented we shared just one breast between 2 of us, which came with a very hefty price tag - we had eaten better quality and at a very reasonable price in Bordeaux. We did enjoy a hearty breakfast the following morning but alas the next morning the breakfast didn't commence till 7 am and we had a train to catch just after 7 am.
"Great value for it's location and quality"
We were pleasantly surprised at the 'class' and quality of this hotel and it's staff. Location is perfect in the centre of the old city. High quality bedrooms with good space.Excellent other hotel facilities and dining. A shuttle van takes you to and from the hotel and the carparks just outside the old city walls.
" A Travellors Return"
It was 2001 that we last journeyed down from Roscoff for an overnight stay in Carcassonne and stayed at La Cite and unsurprisingly little has changed other than it is now almost impossible to drive up to the hotel and one now needs to park just outside of the walls from where very nice people help you with the parking and transport yourselves and bags to the door, all relatively seamless. Room wise all is pretty much up to date and comfortable with all amenities provided. Strangely the hotels restaurant was not available for dinner during our stay although it was used for breakfast and it was necessary to find dining close by in the square where it was possible to feast upon the local main course of Cassoulet, I.e. duck and Toulouse sausage with haricot beans, a true delight. It was all pretty quiet during our February evening, although it does get very busy later in the year when almost everywhere requires booking. It brought back many memories. Journey there and enjoy, now or in decades, it'll still be there.
"Everything it should be"
Once we had found the welcome point outside the walls (after a helpful call to the hotel) everything was exactly as it should be. We were shown to the secure parking (in a picturesque if muddy old orchard) and then driven over the (dry) moat into the city, and then through the inner walls to the hotel. Check in was seamless - good English spoken - and we were shown to our room. Lovely view. Lovely balcony (though no furniture and we wouldn't have wanted to sit out on a cold wet February night anyway). Room smallish but adequate, bed large and very comfortable. No comfortable sitting chairs though. Excellent choices for breakfast - fruit, meats, cheeses, and hot options. All you could possibly want. For a stopover in Carcassonne I can't imagine a better place.
