"The Absolute Best"
Hard to decide where to begin. We've traveled all over and stayed in some very luxurious hotels but nothing compares to the overall experience of Hotel de la Cite. Upon arrival we were escorted through the gates and up to the hotel from the parking lot. The staff was very friendly and professional. They speak perfect English, but played along with my terrible French as well. We stayed in a junior garden suite with a terrace view of the castle, a very comfortable bed, and all the amenities including gourmet 24 hour room service. So the hotel itself is amazing but get this: it's inside a medieval city which closes at 9pm each night to the outside leaving it out to explore. The inner castle and ramparts open daily for tours and the Bastide (village) below has shops and markets and restaurants and bars bro tell the truth though we spent three whole days exploring the medieval city itself. We didn't get to enjoy the spa or the heated pool. We were just too busy with history and the amazing sites. We enjoyed the guided tour of the inner castle and ramparts, a haunted house, inquisition museum, and medieval display of arms. The hotel has La Barbacane, a Michelin starred restaurant that serves quite possibly the best meal I've ever had: a unique fillet of beef stuffed with foie gras and pork cheek. It was amazing as was my wife's risotto canaroli. There was also a fresh game menu, exotic seafood options, an extensive and reasonably priced wine list, artisanal cheeses, and desserts too numerous to mention, each one better than the last. At 232 euros including the wine for two I don't think I will ever find a better quality for that price. Ask Baptiste, the sommelier to help with wine selection. Stick with local and you can't go wrong for about 50 euros a bottle. I also loved the local beer, especially the Brune, and especially if you like bold darks. There are many other restaurants that serve less expensive and still delicious regional delights. Try the cassoulet. The traditional crockpot filled with favs beans, sausage, duck, and ham was terrific as well for under 20 euros. Carcassonne is an easy drive from Barcelona, Marseilles and Provence, and Bordeaux so leaves plenty else to explore as well. We went in the autumn when the crowds are sparse and some of the shops and attractions are closed but we prefer it that way. It gets quite crowded in the summer months but I imagine it would be a lot of fun then too So for me this was a trip of a lifetime. Amazing history, world class food and drink, a luxurious and comfortable hotel, friendly staff. I just couldn't ask for anything more. Will be back for a longer stay next year for sure!
We stayed for 3 nights in October. Absolutely fabulous Hotel and a great location within the city walls. The breakfast was sumptuous and plentiful. The staff were excellent. Our room was beautiful with a fabulous full size bathtub. Well worth booking the Sunday lunch in the hotel restaurant.
"Fab location and lovely hotel"
Lovely hotel within city walls staff very friendly can't do enough for you.special mention to max and Natalie. We stayed in room 214 lovely balcony and view of ramparts and gardens. Breakfast amazing nothing to much trouble staff very helpful. Only negative comment is that hotel expensive for food but plenty of choice just outside the hotel.
"An AMAZING place to visit and to stay! Top Notch!"
Without a doubt, this is one of the nicest places we have stayed and is the best in Carcassonne. We had happened to stay in two different suites and both were so nice that we could have just lived there. My advice is, if you could justify it, get a suite that has a large balcony. The views are priceless!
This hotel is within the City Walls and ideally placed for exploring the castle and ramparts. The hotel is good quality but looks a bit tired in places. The restaurant is michelin starred and therefore the food is a good quality but is not exceptional. The breakfast is a buffet and again good but not exceptional. At breakfast the staff seem more concerned in preparing tables for lunchtime than being attentive to guests. This is a shame because they are all very pleasant. Check your bills because the restaurant had forgotten to put the wine on mine after a meal which I pointed out and on booking out from the hotel found that somebody had been charging my room for food and drink with a different signature to mine and I was also being charged with the cost of parking each night but did not have a car! Apologies were made on both occasions but shows a bit of inefficiency. So overall the hotel is good, not exceptional, the staff are friendly but administration seems inefficient. Despite all this I would recommend it for its location and general ambience. I would think it is the best place to stay in Carcassonne and if I go back will use the hotel.
