"Struggled with this review"
Stayed here for 1 night during spring break. Loved the experience...but agreed with some reviews about the hotel needing a "freshening". It is a pricey night...I think all in, parking resort fee and room it was close to $400 for a Sunday night (during spring break). The employees are super nice, the location can't be beat. We had a resort view room, so looked out at the pool with a small balcony. I didn't realize until bedtime that our A/C didn't seem to be working. I didn't complain because I literally didn't want the hassle at that hour. The room decor was great...but the common areas like the hallways were super tired. To eat or drink in the hotel is lots of $...but I am sure for many patrons not an issue. For example...a pitcher of margaritas on the sun deck...$66. Cocktails $17&up. Close walk to many good food options. Take advantage of the happy hours nearby if you stay here. The beach was lovely! The only reason I am giving it 3 stars is honestly for value. Oh big plus...check in was 4:00. We arrived around 12:30-1 and were able to check in. HUGE plus. I love great customer service and they have that here...but it's just so darn expensive!
"Beautiful historic venue"
Massive, wooden, historic structure located on the beach. Has a grand persona. Grounds are lush with palm trees and large landscaping. Patio seating with great view of ocean. Pricey all the way around but nice nostalgia. Worth a visit just to see. Didn't spend the night just sightseeing in the area and is on the must see list. Lots of shops below hotel. Walking distance to many shops and restaurants.
"Most Memorable Trip of a Lifetime! - Thank You & WOW!"
EVERYONE DESERVES TO SPOIL THEMSELVES & THIS IS THE PLACE TO DO IT.... I cannot describe what perfect hospitality is, but this defines it! It's expensive, prepare yourself for it, but sometimes you have to pay rack.. It's the equivalent of every kid needing to go to Disneyworld. Well Every Adult NEEDS to make this trip. The beach is stunning, the property is incredible, the food is impressive, they even grow their own herbs... love this independent historic gem.. I needed this vacation and I cannot thank you enough!
"Fabulous iconic hotel of the movies"
Beautiful old (1890) hotel in a fabulous location on the beach. Lobby, public rooms and patios/decks are amazing with great views, especially at sunset, and many photo displays of films featuring the Hotel (Some Like it Hot, The Stunt Man, others). The lobby is grand and beautiful. Bar with patio has pricey drinks, but calamari appetizer was reasonable and more than ample for 2 to share, so it all evened out. Lovely way to end the day. Didn't stay there overnight - just a visit for food & drink.
"historic, maybe. luxury hardly. Nice beach for a day visit."
This was supposed to be the cherry on top at the end of 10 day trip to southern Cal... it was so not! Super disappointing after the Hotel Bel Air in LA. I'd say this is it's trampy "long in the tooth" step sister. Think one of those behemoth old grand dames on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. Same price point as the Hotel Bel Air so I expected the same standards. I'd rather pay $48 per night for valet at the bel air than $39 per night + $30 per night "resort fee" that has no apparent justification'! Food and beverage at the hotel are expensive with no Wolfgang puck in sight. In other words, food very average. I guess if you want to stay in a "world famous" property with 547 of your closest friends, plus whoever walks in off the street since the hotel is a general tourist attraction for anyone and everyone passing through for a drink, or perhaps the mini mall of shops in the basement... I guess you could crash one of the multiple events taking place at the property and then put your earplugs in when you are ready to tuck into the quite average (seemingly poly blend) linens. We couldn't turn off the hotel advertising on our TV because the remote control "went missing" from our room... and my review would not be complete if I neglected to mention the mildew/mold in the grout in our shower and the filthy restrooms on the restaurant level. Carpeting throughout is filthy too... historic = old, just don't expect luxury.
