"Disappointing Second Stay"
Having had a great stay during our last trip to Bruges, we decided to stay here again. I must say, we were disappointed second time around. We arrived in Bruges early morning and swung by the hotel to drop our luggage off. We were asked if we wanted to "pre check in", to make actual check in much faster, later on. However, pre check in took a very, very long time. The reception was very busy and there was only one member of staff trying to juggle everything. She was lovely, but seemed very tired - she was easily confused and repeatedly asked us the same questions and forgot she'd already taken my card and passport details...quite a few times. This meant pre check in took around 30 minutes, which (to me) is far too long. We were finally given a luggage tag and went about our day. Upon returning, the same lady actually checked us in, but the process was no quicker. She became flustered quickly and asked for all of our details again, only to realise she'd taken them earlier in the day. I imagine she sees hundreds of people a day, so I didn't expect her to remember us but, surely, pre check in is there to avoid this sort of thing' After check in, we went to our room and we were hugely disappointed. We'd paid for a superior suite and it just seemed like a bog standard room. (It doesn't help that the last time we stayed our room was absolutely out of this world fantastic!) The room was small and the decor was dated, the TV was very small and there wasn't as many luxury toiletries as last time. Our luggage was delivered to our room very promptly, but the man would not leave! He asked if we'd stayed before, I said yes but he continued to stand there and tell me everything about the hotel. Just when I thought he was done and I started to close the door, he held his hand out to stop and starting telling me alternative ways to the cafe downstairs! He was clearly hankering for a tip, but he didn't get one! I was touched to find a note on a table welcoming us back to the hotel, with a small box of chocolates. It was a lovely touch. It has to be said, whilst we didn't spend much time in the room, we did both sleep relatively well. Our booking included breakfast this time. From what I've read, I expected breakfast to be fantastic...but it's really nothing special. I've had far better choice and quality food in airport hotels. The hot selection was poor and the eggs were terrible. Nothing was freshly prepared. The bread selection looked impressive, but on tasting it seemed stale and dry. On a plus note, there was a great selection of juices. No one offered us tea or coffee, but I noticed other tables were regularly being served hot beverages' The worst thing for me though, was the other guests! Never have I seen such a pretentious gaggle of champagne quaffing yuppies all in one place. All thinking they were very self important and better than any one else. Perhaps this is why they received better service than us lowly folk from Yorkshire' I was glad to leave to be honest - check in was equally slow, but the hotel did let us leave our luggage again which was a life saver. I really don't think we'll stay here again - there are so many lovely quant hotels in the historical city of Bruges. I kind of feel that by staying here, we're missing out on the real Bruges'
"fantastic hotel but not quite 5*"
We came here for two nights midweek- Reception- When we arrived and went to check in they couldn't find our details anywhere and although it took two people to get it sorted they allowed us to check in an hour earlier than normal which was really appreciated. We called down for help finding somewhere to eat that was vegetarian, they did try but they were sadly unable to help, we also noticed in the evenings that the front desk was not manned so you had to call out if you needed attention which i would not have expected from a 5* hotel. Room- We had a deluxe room and it was lovely really spacious and clean with a huge bed and large bath and shower, the TV had plenty of channels and the coffee machine was a nice touch. They kindly gave us use of the iron and ironing board, (i would recommend they upgrade their irons) our only issue with the room was that you couldn't turn off the air conditioning, after the first night we mentioned it at the front desk and they sent someone up who managed to turn it down but not fully off. Breakfast- breakfast was good with a good selection of juices and pastries, the slabs of chocolate were delicious also, my only issue was with the hot food, nothing was cooked to order and the meat and vegetarian food used the same tongs which i wasn't a fan of, it would have been better if the eggs were together and the bacon and sausages were separate, just little things that make a difference. Spa- we went to the spa on one of the days to see what it was like, it was a beautiful space really nice and bright with a steam and sauna room and upstairs had a salt and sun rooms. The sauna was very good and the entire space was spotless and empty, unfortunately the main shower room smelt of sewage and the changing rooms were not clearly labelled which led to some confusion as to where to change and we only noticed them on the way out. Bar- we only went to the bar one evening to get some tea but it was very well presented and the barman was very polite and helpful. Overall it was a lovely stay very centrally located to the centre of Bruges and all the local shops, the staff were polite and friendly at all times, we would definitely recommend others to stay.
Amazing hotel, perfect location and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We ended up getting engaged and I couldn't have picked a better location. Truly was a fairytale weekend. We will definitely be back
"Gorgeous hotel with a massively disappointing feature"
My partner and I stayed here for a romantic weekend. The hotel is amazing from the outside, really stunning. Inside it is equally nice however I do feel they have chosen a lot of furniture that is not in keeping with the castle aesthetic. The bar again has unusual furniture for such a hotel but is looking out on a lovely garden. The rooms are really nice and there is a great gym. The bath products are really luxurious. It is very central and close to all of Bruges's attractions. Breakfast is first class and involved loads of Belgian chocolate and sparkling wine. We were disappointed that there was no pool as you would usually find in a 5 star but kept occupied out and about. Unfortunately I could not give this hotel 5/5 due to one massive flaw....the walls in the bedrooms are paper thin. You can literally hear EVERYTHING happening in the rooms on either side. This is of course not convenient in a city of love as you can imagine. I would not recommend bringing children to this hotel under any circumstances. Although I enjoyed my stay I will never be returning due to the sound situation.
