"Excellent 5 star property with boutique feel!"
This is the grand dame of Croatia. We were fortunate to stay during the incredibly festive Christmas season in Zagreb. The hotel, and Marica in particular, was very helpful prior to arrival (booking train tickets, making recommendations) and even more helpful upon arrival when our luggage had been lost by Delta airlines. They helped track it down and got it into our room right before our night at the Nutcracker. And the breakfast buffet is top notch. Our only complaint is that we did not have more time at the property.
"Grand old beauty with good staff"
Everything good you read about this hotel is correct. The staff are very well trained, some even downright friendly! The hotel is gorgeous, food is decent, staff are polite, anything else you might want is available on request. Location is also convenient with short walks to the main commercial areas and also the tram service at your doorstep. The hotel is luxury but not necessarily luxurious depending on your needs. We had quality basics and some minor inconveniences such as lack of coffee/tea facilities in the room, no alarm clock or music and the shower leaked. We would definitely recommend others stay here.
The room was very clean, hotel facilities are good, no any blame for the breakfast I love all the fresh vegetables they provided. Our stay was fantastic I am very much appreciated the service here, will be back here for sure.
This hotel is awesome and I am not an American when I say that. We stayed here in room 306 for the three nights from 30 December until 3 January specifically for the New Years Eve Gala Dinner and Ball. There is no Shabby Chic or Faded Glory here, this is a 1920's fabulous hotel in 5 Star condition and probably better than when it was originally built for the wealthy passengers from the Orient Express. (I will provide feedback on Zagreb City and the Zinfandel restaurant separately) It's a wonderful solid building which you enter by a grand reception area with much of the original marble from the '20s and clocks dating from the 1950's. The staff can only be faulted by not speaking every European language but because they speak English so well who am I to complain' To your left is the lounge where sometimes a piano is played and you can feast on tea and cakes and then further through is the bar where they still serve cocktails if you want them. I am sure we ate and drank with Croatia's finest and visitors from many countries and when you read the book about who has stayed at the Esplanade it reads like a Who's Who of the movies and politics and even royalty and heads of state. Our room was very well equipped except for no tea or coffee making equipment which we missed and I would moan about there being no heated towel rails if there weren't twice as many towels as you need anyway and they are refreshed daily. Even though it was minus 6 outside the hotel was always warm and sitting in the lounge having tea and listening to the live piano music was a rare experience of being in a Poirot movie and as though you'd gone back in time but with all modern conveniences. With regards to the New Years Eve Ball, it just got better. Everyone meeting in the foyer for canapés and sparkling wine was another scene from a movie and then we had opted to eat in the ballroom rather than Zinfandels, the hotel restaurant, and it was amazing. Decorated with tables of eight, five courses and endless wine included in the fixed price. A live band and we danced until 02:00 in the morning and I think many people stayed much later. We now plan to do something similar every New Years Eve because it was such a success and each will be benchmarked against this one and I fear we may never find its equal.
"It was cold"
An old established hotel close to the railway station. We visited in December and thought the common areas as well as the room were a bit cold. We put the heating up in our room but it didn’t heat up to the requested temperature. We were told that the thermostat is controlled centrally so it was not possible to control the temperature in the guest bedrooms. Hmm. The room itself was pleasant. The bed and the pillows were very very comfortable and we slept really well. The bathroom had L’Occitane toiletries. Breakfast was a combination of limited buffet choices and a small a la carte menu. A 5 star hotel would be expected to provide a greater variety of dishes. What was available, though, was of a good quality. The waiting staff were either very official, cold and robot like, or smiled vacuously. Staff at the reception, in comparison, were friendly and helpful. The concierge took care of our car, which on a very busy Sunday evening with grid-locked traffic around the hotel was very welcome. However, the car was returned in the morning covered in ice (although with the windows cleared) which made us wonder where the car park was and how secure it was. The hotel bar had a good and quite cheap selection of drinks and the bar staff were friendly and efficient. Would stay again because of the amazing bed, but probably not in winter.
