"Superb staff, rooms, breakfast and LOCATION...a real classy place with atmosphere"
The breakfast buffet is to die for and the staff were very friendly and fried some eggs and bacon, tomatoes. Fresh tea was served and I have never seen such an expansive buffet at even 5 star places in Asia.... ..so many cheeses, sausages, smoked salmon, and then shrimp cocktail, pates and muesli plus a selection of breads, jams and croissants at the buffet plus a cooked breakfast if you want it. I have visited this hotel many years ago and used to like eating there as then it was a Michelin starred restaurant, but now they have gone for a bistro type restaurant which is also very good and with super staff. I do change management at CEO level and I can tell a successful operation by just seeing how the staff are happy, helpful, attentive etc ...and this place just hits you with that feeling! I flew into Munich airport and opted for the S Bahn that took me in 45minutes to the Central station snd then it id just 5 metres walk to the front door of the hotel. The S Bahn tickets for a week plus the return journey from the airport cost just 30€uros or about half the cost of a single taxi fare and the journey time is half! I used to frequent the Sheraton Arabella, Hilton in the Park, and Vier Jahreszeiten ...all expensive places but frankly this hotel is better located and much more personal. The Karstadt huge shop is just 15 metres from the front door of the hotel! I bought some slam and cut meats to take home and again the friendly staff at the hotel readily placed the stuff in the hotel fridge! I highly recommend and will stay again next tie I go to Munich......especially if they upgrade the guest PC available to use for free!
"Nice traditional hotel"
Great location when you arrive from the train, few minutes walk from Munich passage all the way to mariaplatz. The stuff is amazing, hospitality is great. Breakfast was more than we expected, if you want to fill the traditional Munich in style, this is the place. The room itself are not fancy.
"Great for sightseeing and shopping"
This cozy hotel decorated in Bavarian style is located in a quiet street between the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) and Karlzplatz, just across the street from Karstadt department store and ~5 minute walk from the closest Kaufhof, which makes it easily accessible and perfect for shopping. And it is also perfect for sightseeing both in Munich and the vicinity. You can walk to Marienplatz in less than 15 minutes through the historic center of the city. Bus city tours start right around the corner from the hotel, and from the Haupbahnhof you can get by train to Fuessen, to see Neuschwanstein castle. The rooms are not very large, but comfortable, and you can really relax there, both in your room or in the lobby, where there is always hot tea, fruit and fresh newspapers available for the hotel visitors. Reception staff and porters are great. They really welcome you to the hotel and do everything possible to make your visit more enjoyable no matter what time of day or night you contact them.
I wanted to stay at this hotel for its proximity to the shopping area. The room is tiny, and you could hear every movement in the hallways. I think the floors of the hallways are hardwood and not carpet. Huge selling point though is the service, the staff is extremely courteous and make you feel welcome the minute you walk in and I love the German traditional cloths the staff wear. Will I stay again' Maybe if I'm away from the traffic of the hallways and in a larger room.
"Can't fail to love this hotel"
The Excelsior is not a chain hotel and all the better for it. There is a genuine wish from every staff member for you to enjoy your stay and they clearly love working for the hotel. Their pride in their jobs is evident in their actions and attitude. The renovated Alpine rooms are very comfortable and really well equipped. Breakfast is wonderful and very good value, staff are responsive and remember your preferences from day to day. Giesel's Vinotek serves great food but we stayed for a week and could only get a booking at the bar for one night as it is very popular with locals. As you would expect from a Vinotek the wine knowledge is impeccable, the food was generally great however my risotto was so salty I couldn't eat it. We received a free dessert as a consequence when I gave this feedback to the kitchen. One issue that surprised me was that despite the new renovation the doors aren't very sound proof so you can hear people walking down the corridors and talking at night. You have access to a small gym at a sister hotel and there is a new exercise facility planned at the Excelsior. The bar is also closed for renovation but they will serve drinks in the lobby. The location is also perfect and close to the main attractions of Munich and the train station. On balance, they really look after you here, it was my second stay and I will stay here again on my next trip to Munich. The warmth of the hospitality was the most notable part of our stay, we really enjoyed our visit.
