We had a junior suite--absolutely lovely room! Courtyard view, not so great, but we were actually only in the room to sleep. Very comfortable furnishings. Service was great! Our friends were in a deluxe room down the hall and we had a view of Parliament and the Independence Day Parade from their room--a wonderful bonus that we all very much enjoyed. The rooftop restaurant has lovely views of the Acropolis, both night and day. We would certainly go back again!
"One of the best hotel in the world"
In my top list of best hotels in the world for the last 10 years. Why: great service, in particular with the superb butler service; fabulous classic room; very warm lobby bar area with pianist on duty certain nights; superb dinner at Roof Garden with a gorgeous view on the Acropolis and finally and very nice spa, all of this with a touch of luxury, what else you want from a luxury hotel'
"Absolutely first class"
I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel ... it is exactly what a hotel of this class should be. The staff were incredibly good; very friendly and extremely efficient. They were all a complete credit to Starwood. Our room was large and very comfortable, and had a private butler service (on the 6th 'butler' floor). It had every amenity and I was delighted to find really good sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner, and large bars of soap ... hugely better than many hotels. There was also free WiFi internet and free bottled water ... essential commodities that other luxury hotels charge a fortune for. These are the sorts of details that ensure a return visit from me. The rooftop swimming pool was small and got a little crowded later on it the day. But it was a great area and the bar staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient. There is a basement spa and pool area, which were also nice, although finding a steam room that wasn't too hot or too cold for me was a challenge. But full marks to the massage therapists - best hotel deep tissue massage in years! The restaurant upstairs was good. Thank you to Michael and his team. We were only going to eat there on one night but we ended up eating on two nights because the Easter menu was so nice - particularly the octopus and the lobster & pasta dish. (On one of the other nights we ate at Funky Gourmet - which was absolutely stunning if you're into fancy fine dining.) The bar by the restaurant was also great and the bartender made excellent gibsons. The hotel is in a great position, just opposite the parliament building and an easy walk to many of the sights. There is also a very handy metro stop just by the hotel. I will certainly be staying here again.
"Luxurious room only downgraded due to booking issue"
I booked through SPG, their partner hotel site. I was shocked to see a deluxe room with an Acropolis view for a very good rate (but still more than the partner King George next door) so I booked it immediately. I didn't catch it but when the confirmation email arrived it said city view in the small print. When we arrived they tried to put us in a very small room (not deluxe - not sure what their classic room must look like) right above the worst traffic. We were very angry and they would not admit what obviously was a computer error on their part (I'm still awaiting a response from management). These hotels change rates and add-ons all the time and someone on their end made a mistake, but they would not budge. I don't have time to take screen shots of every thing, but I learned a lesson. They did move us to a deluxe room on a higher floor that was actually much much nicer than the deluxe room they originally put us in - not sure how they thought the two rooms were in any way similar. The staff was very nice, the hotel very luxurious and I'm sure they are used to patrons trying to pressure them or misunderstanding something, but there was no doubt that the booking I made was for a deluxe room with an Acropolis view and the booking even said above the 5th floor - they tried to give me neither a deluxe, nor a view, and on the bottom floor. I doubt they will ever admit their mistake and the computer error has been long since corrected. If something seems to good to be true take a screen shot - lesson learned. It ended up fine with the 5th floor room, but I could have stayed at the King George for 60euro less WITH breakfast and the room was almost just as nice.
"Hotel excellent , restaurant disappointing"
Yes the rooftop restaurant has spectacular views but we go to restaurants to eat and enjoy the experience. In the case of Grande Bretagne there is a total lack of atmosphere, unlike other dining experiences there are no welcoming niceties and at best the food can be described as overpriced and average. If staying at the hotel then enjoy the experience but take the recommendations of the concierge to dine out locally.
