"Fawlty Towers lives on in in Hotel Hafen"
A truly dreadful experience in every way. The poor experience started the moment I arrived. On arrival they said my company's booking agent had not pre-paid and made me pay (again) for a room I knew they had already paid for. They said they had no record of payment. After 3 separate discussions (totalling over an hour) that night and the following morning, they finally identified that they had a "system error," and that the room had been pre-paid. They refunded me. No apology whatsoever. The room itself was in block 4, room 701. Avoid it. It had a bad smell and poor lighting. No main light, and one of the side lights didn't work. So the room was smelly and dark. Oh, and the room was tiny - it only had a single bed, and the total room size itself was no bigger that a double bed at best. I had however paid for a double room. When I questioned them about why I had a very small room with a single bed, despite booking a double room they replied, "some of our double rooms are very small, and some only have single beds, but we like to call them a double room." Basil Fawlty would have been proud of that response. I am not sure how they can advertise a double room, give their visitors a room like this, and get away with it. I checked out the next day. I had actually been forewarned by a work colleague who stayed there a few months ago, and had only realised a few weeks after his stay that the hotel had charged him twice for his stay. It took him a further month for the hotel to refund him. Oh well, great location but definitely not recommended.
"Nice stay - regular but overpriced"
Stayed in Hamburg for business for a day. This place was extremely overpriced due to the city mostly overbooked for G20 meeting. The place is clean, tidy and despite publicizing to have a view it really doesn't. I found 230 Euros really expensive for the value I got. Their staff is friendly and helpful.
I had high expectations, as I often travel to Hamburg but this time my booking was in a more centric area. Very early I started to have a bad feeling about the stay: as I checked in, the guy at the front desk at night asked me for a credit card to pre-authorize the amount of the stay. Oh, so you don't trust reservations coming from an international trusted corporation' Ok! I am not the kind of guy that looks like I am not going to pay for the room, what is the reason behind that' Anyway, knowing that my money was going to be taken from my account for weeks (always happens with international authorizations), I asked the guy NOT to proceed that way: if he had doubts about my will to pay for my stay, he'd better just take the amount for once and for all from my card and have the stay paid in advance. So what did he do' Not only he took the amount from my account twice, he also got the room charged so in the end, 3 times the amount of the stay were taken away just like that!! I have seen that kind of unusual procedures in the US (pre-authorizations) but first time I see this in Europe and as you can see I do travel a lot. As I went to the room, located in a second (more modern) building, I was shocked by the size of it, quite small... Pros: Bed is Ok Overall design is modern nice reading lamp shower is excellent good breakfast Cons: very expensive bottles of water (gotta be kiddin', guys!) narrow toilet area heating did not work, had to borrow an electric heater no room for my laptop, impossible to work no closet and... finally... No USB/HDMI ports usable on the TV. Let me be clear on the facts about the TV, I have already pointed out in several hotel reviews how the needs of the guests have evolved over the years. We just don't want a TV to look at it, we need a screen as an extension of our portable hard drives and computers to enjoy movies and TV series just like at home. For "reasons of security" the HDMI ports were disabled. Ok, I have an MBA in Hotel Administration and Management and have worked for more than 10 years in top hotels and I can tell you that is a BAD excuse! Your maintenance guys don't want kids to mess with TV config and you just enable channel switching and volume, I know the story. So the TV was totally useless unless I spoke German of course. Anyway, it was so old and the image quality was so bad that it would have been tough to watch anyway. Time for new TVs, seriously... Once I arrived home, I contacted the hotel to be informed about the estimated refund of my money, and a nice clerk called J. answered my e-mails promptly. Anyway... It's been more than a week since I stayed there and still TWICE the amount of my stay has not been returned to my bank account. I really wonder if that is legal in Germany, I know in Spain it is not, you guys are playing with my money... This is the most annoying experience I had this year, by far... Looking forward to hear from the hotel again, or to see my money back in the bank.
"Great View over the Harbour"
a very traditional hotel with old interior and modern rooms (as long as you stay in the old part, not in the residence!). very good rooms with excellent view to the harbor (you must especially ask for those rooms during reservation process). popular "tower bar" with greatest view over the harbor! but also nice beer bar. very good restaurant. 3 minutes to public transport, which brings you within 10 minutes to any place in the city center.
