"Old fashioned but cosy hotel with port flair"
We just stayed one night in this typical Hamburg harbour style hotel. With the moment you enter the lobby you step into a different world with all the odds and ends they decorated the reception, the stairways and walls. From the atmosphere it has a touch of the last century and transmits the feeling : you are now in a Hanse town with centuries of long own nautical history. The rooms are old fashioned but nice and clean and the hotel is located very in the epicenter of nightlife with bars and Mediterranean restaurants ( Spanish and Portuguese). We did like the generous breakfast buffet and the view you have right on the Hamburg Harbour. Guess we will stay there again when next time in Hamburg.
"Poorly Managed Hotel"
Arrived 2130 on a warm (28 deg) evening. Given a room in the tower away from the main building. Opened door to a wall of heat. Found there was no a/c. Opening the window did nothing. Called reception to be told the hotel was full and no other rooms were available. Asked for a fan to be told none were available due to my late check-in. I knew I wouldn't sleep in such heat so asked what they could do. Nothing was their initial response followed by the magical appearance (') of an available room in the main building. They assured me this would be cooler. So II re-packed my bag and moved. The room wasn't any cooler so I spent 2 nights laid on the bed sweating and trying to sleep. The mini bar fridge was switched on but wasn't cooling so the warm bottle of beer (yes just 1) remained untouched. As did the rotting apple that remained for the whole of my stay on a metal stand on the wall. During my stay the bin wasn't emptied and neither the toiletries or toilet paper were replenished. Is this a youth hostel or a €200 a night 4* hotel. Breakfast was ok with lots of choice although on my final morning I didn't eat until 9am and it was bedlam in there with dishes not being replenished - wasn't fun chasing the last spoonful of fruit salad. When I checked out the receptionist asked me to pay for a coke and a beer from the mini-bar!!! This is clearly a hotel than makes money based on it's name. It is badly managed and whilst I accept they can't magically install a/c they could at least do more to ensure the rooms are cooler when it's warm - e.g. by putting a fan in, keeping the blinds closed during the day, providing a sheet to sleep under etc.
"Lovely views from Hotel however ..."
This last weekend we stayed at the Hotel Hafen in Hamburg and overall the experience was pleasant enough. The rooms were super clean with cute little mint boxes for guests. Beds are super comfy and if you lucky to have a view of the harbour then it adds to the whole experience. My biggest gripe however is the actual staff. There were exceptions to the bad service and that was in the restaurant overlooking the harbour area. Here the staff were friendly polite and the service was very good. The housekeeping staff were very polite and quite accommodating to our needs. The staff at reception however were abrupt and bordering on being outright rude. This is the first point of contact with the public and they are not doing the hotel any justice. In conclusion if you not too concerned about being greeted warmly and to be made feel welcome, then this hotel will do.
"Don't believe the advert....."
From the pictures and information you are lead to believe this hotel is full of character.. Wrong!! The reception and public rooms are quirky but the bedroom we had 30416 (in the main hotel) could have been a 3 star anywhere in the world. No a/c. No tea/coffee facility. Had to open windows for any cool air and noise from outside made sleep difficult. Noise from train line although we were on other side of hotel! Partial view of river only. Many steps to/from river and train station. Heavily stained carpet in room off reception (waiting room') needs either heavy clean or replacing. All in all very disappointed..
"Not for the unfit traveller"
Massive positive for this hotel is the view, it's stunning and we were lucky enough to have a room overlooking the harbour. Few downsides I'm afraid though. The hotel is located high up and only really accessible by climbing a great deal of stairs from the harbour which I think is not made clear enough on the website. You can in fairness access the hotel from its level by taking the S Bahn to St Pauli station but again this was not made clear and only found out by some exploring. The other downside was the lack of refreshment available throughout the day, with temperatures above 32 degrees liquids were in high demand and there is nowhere to have a refreshment without leaving the building. The bar does not open till 5pm and no vending machines around. If you do want breakfast it's a massive €20!!! The room was basic but pleasant however there is no way our bed was a double and no iron! Finally I found the staff very disinterested. I had to ask 4 times in 1 day for a spare pillow for my room and when I finally received one it was the size of a sofa cushion, and I wasn't even asked if I had a nice stay on my checkout. To sum up lovely location and view if you are fit enough for the stairs but tired and lack of amenities.
