"Unusual and quirky"
We stayed for 2 nights late December. Unusual and Quirky but not a luxury hotel. We stayed in one of the newly refurbished rooms at the top and was lovely to walk around the balcony-some nice views. Nice quality coffee in the room and mini bar was a nice extra touch. The staff are very friendly and helpful and speak very good English. Location is great for the train station.
"Christmas markets "
Stayed at the Wasserturm the week before Christmas. It was the perfect time. The hotel is quite special and quirky, five minutes walk from the city centre and easy walking distance to all 6 markets. It's very clean and the staff are charming. Although the skyline restaurant was closed, the one downstairs was lovely. Rooms have coffee machine etc. and complimentary restocked mini-bar. Point to watch! someone charged drinks from the bar to our room. Always check your bill. Had a great time, we will return.
"Not really as advertised."
This hotel is promoted as a luxury hotel in Cologne....it isn't. It is a bit different, maybe quirky, but that is probably the end of the 'pros' list. Whilst the public areas appear well presented the rooms are not the same. Very tight for space and feeling very tired and dated. We had a junior suite with an upstairs sleeping space. The spiral staircase leading up was too tight and steep for suitcases, so had to be left downstairs, also no windows in the bed area which wasn't great. The hotel is also quite removed from everything, you can walk to the old town and Dom, but is quite a walk and not great in poor weather. One of my pet hates in hotels is phone charges, unfortunately I had to make a couple of international phone calls...160euros later I knew this wasn't a great idea. They weren't long calls and in this day and age with modern communications there is absolutely no need for this and is a blatant rip off. Many hotels take advantage of things like VOIP and have minimal charges, they should look at this. Food was also expensive and not memorable. Overall, there are far better options for your stay in Cologne. We enjoyed the city and loved walking around the Christmas markets...seven to choose from.
"Two nights in a historical site"
It isn't often that one can stay in a former waterworks utility on a vacation. The Hotel in Wasserturm is a high-end experience in one of Germany's loveliest cities. A tour of the building's architecture (I recommend walking down the stairs from the top to the bottom) is fabulous and the interiors are very clever although it is easy to get lost on the lobby floor, due to the circular layout, and in the December Yuletide season the holiday decorations, including exterior lighting, add to the atmosphere. Many of the other guests seemed to be business travelers (the hotel also hosts events). My room was well-equipped with a wonderful view of the city's skyline and the Dom Cathedral. For a single person, it worked although would have been irritating if I were traveling with another. The outlet on the desk did not seem to recharge my phone and there was no obvious outlet at the bedside so I resorted to a floor outlet. It was hard to control the temperature and the room often seemed overheated. The staff are friendly and fluent in English. The dining room offers a nice albeit somewhat pricey breakfast; the dinner menu is limited and also expensive and the service is a little slow (although that seems common in Germany, where the norm does not seem to be rush patrons through their meal). The hotel is near a subway station and the location is within walking distance of the city center although on a winter's night, it can seem isolated and a little off-putting if you want to wander around by yourself. If you're coming from the main train station, a taxi is worth the fare if you have heavy luggage.
