Very good value, but would expect a 5-star hotel to have a decent selection of international newspapers available (in several languages) and a broader range of TV channels.Comment of W. Jonathan, United Kingdom the 2015-03-26
"DEFINATELY NOT FIVE STARS."
I booked this hotel for four days on a recent trip to Porto. I based my decision on the price and the five star rating. Basically, the common areas look really nice. The rest of the hotel is a different story. The hallways are so dark that if you dropped something you would need a flashlight to pick it up. The rooms are in desperate need of a make over. Chipped paint here and there, streaks running down the walls, and cold bathrooms are just a few of the things you would have to deal with. The saving grace is that the hotel is in a decent location. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone; nor would I stay again. I truly don't know why this hotel has five stars!!!
Good location, great attention, big room and bath. Old fashioned hotel, but still great. Very good and complete breakfast and great staff. I will probably come back if I ever return to Porto. I had a problem and the clerk solved it very fast.
"Great location, well maintained, but still kinda old feeling"
pros: -location, close to everything -soft linens -good front desk service cons: -rooms well maintained but musty smelling and showing its age -servers stood around during breakfast but never ask you if you wanted coffee or tea (but maybe this is the portuguese way' noticed this at other places too) -bit dark
"Very nice hotel in great loaction"
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a week during last January. The staff was courteous and helpful, the room was neat and spacious and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel is perfect for walking tours around Porto, since it is close to the Ribeira (the river front), the main historical sites and the Sao Bento train station.
"Customer service and attention to detail"
Great location close to metro station, bars, restaurants and tourist attractions. An older, 'character' property so don't expect amenities like ice machines on every floor :) or multiple elevators. We booked via a third party consolidator so had a 'classic' room, there was no option to upgrade. This was fine although far too hot but I resolved this problem by turning off the radiator, opening the window and setting the wall mounted A/C unit to maximum cold. Not sure anyone would want a room in excess of 30 degrees though so maybe a point for management to address. Room was clean and facing a rather noisy square/street. Not a problem as it's well insulated from noise. Quality of linens was very good and the room itself was compact but big enough. The only real problem was the size of the bed, we had a queen which is smaller than a US sized equivalent. I'm 220lb and 6ft4 (100kilo, 1m95cm) and just didn't fit in the bed alongside my partner. I should have mentioned this to the desk staff but as they were all so nice just decided to see how it went. After 2 nights of poor sleep I mentioned it to them and they immediately offered a solution. I expected to be moved to a room with 2 single beds pushed together which would have been fine. Isabella the desk agent managed to put us in a larger room with a larger king bed instead. I would have been happy to pay for this upgrade if it had been offered but it was given as a courtesy. This is fantastic customer service. On that note I'd also like to commend the rest of the staff, everyone was extremely friendly and nothing was too much for them. I stay at a lot of top tier hotels (Starwood, Hyatt etc) and the Infante Sagres was up there with the best of them if not exceeding the standard. It was my partner's birthday and they gave us a drink on the house and wrote some nice messages which were much appreciated. Thank you. Breakfast was included and was comprehensive, fresh juice, excellent Pastella de Nata (which I presume were made in house as they were warm) and very good, attentive service which seems to be a theme at the Infante de Sagres. I would have rated this property 'excellent' but I feel that the bar prices were just too high (the hotel must lose revenue at these prices that are double the local high end establishments), there were some issues with common areas not being totally cleaned (trash left on the staircases for 3 days, I guess nobody uses them!) and the fact the double beds are so small in the standard rooms despite their being space for larger ones. These are minor complaints though. Sleep quality rating based on the larger rooms with larger beds. The hotel is good, location fantastic, the staff excellent and I can recommend it without hesitation. Next time I'm in Porto I'll be staying there.
