"Excellent holiday in wonderful hotel"
We have just returned from an excellent holiday in Val Thorens, staying at the Fitzroy Hotel. The room was very nice, the staff extremely attentive and efficient, and generally the hotel is first rate. Particularly nice to have the spa with sauna, steam room and pool after a long day on the slopes. The pool is relatively small, not for swimming lengths, but perfect for a cooling dip after the sauna or steam.
"Good impressions were ruined after we got robbed by the hotel stuff!"
The hotel have very good location, direct access to the ski slopes, clean rooms and nice public zone with a bar and real fireplace! But good impressions were ruined after we got robbed by hotel staff. We left 800$ on our desk in the room and went to the bar, after we came back, money wore stollen(on this time room were cleaning),in the morning we went to police to declare what was stollen. Hotel management didn't do anything to solve this situation. The good impressions from the hotel were ruined!!!!! Breakfast lives much to be desired!!!! Rooms are very small
"Where is the Value' My dissapointment of 2016/2017 winter."
Dear hotel management! "This was the best hotel in the world". I was told by my colleague who visited your hotel 10 years ago. That was a reason to choose your Hotel for the New Year holidays. The location of the hotel is excellent however the food and the service was below any expectations. 1. Waiters. It looks it was a team of the students without any experience. It was only one professional (very nice man) but he could do nothing with this dream team. I had a chance to order beer several times without any result and there were so many other examples. Once I was given a bill for the food and drinks, the mistake was over 200 EUR, not bad. 2. Room service. It was a nice tradition to clean rooms after 6 p.m. several times, why not' 3. Food. It was possible to book rooms with dinners only. Smart managers offered different menu for us with very limited choice. The breakfast had the same poor choice like dinners. However the prices for the drinks were very unusual, for example the shot for 15 years malt whisky was 29 EUR, not bad. I had a chance to visit other hotels in this village. The difference was tremendous. My opinion about my visit was not unique. Kind regards and good luck in 2017!
We booked the FitzRoy as a Christmas treat for ourselves but were very let down by the hotel for a whole variety of reasons, which I'll try to list here to save others the disappointment (and money!) Firstly the room itself: we stayed in a 'comfort slope view' room, this was slope facing with a balcony which was great, but otherwise... incredibly small with strange bathroom set-up with basin area being open to the room through slatted bars, but you still had to go through a clunky door to actually get in there. Walls are very thin - we could hear everything our neighbours were saying/their tv etc and there was an interconnecting door (which I always dislike). The bed(/s) was very uncomfortable, two singles pushed together, without linkup or mattress topper, along with synthetic duvet and pillow and poor quality linen. Towels and robes were old and threadbare, and only ever provided with one set each. No temperature control within the room, so we had to open the balcony door when we got too hot, only to have to shut it again as other guests were smoking on their balconies, so back to overheating. The hairdryer gave up after a few uses - I realised this was due to dust build up in the vents that had just never been cleaned. Some of the minibar confections had actually gone out of date - a jar of nuts that we tried were soft and upon closer inspection detailed a use-by date of 2 months prior! - I left a note beside these for the maid, but this was not followed up. Breakfast: I agree with other reviewers that this just was not 5* standard, in respect of both the variety produce and also the service. Service was lax, once you had been sat down you had to actively catch someone's eye in order to get tea / coffee (or any extra egg orders), and milk was forgotten each time. Knowing after the first couple of mornings that the breakfast was not up to much, we decided we'd just grab a quick croissant and a juice before getting going one day at around 9.30, only to find there were no croissants left - a staff member told me they could probably make some in 10 minutes or so, but that put paid to our quick breakfast. We had the same with the scrambled eggs and bacon on previous days - I don't understand why in a 5* hotel this wasn't being constantly replenished. Also, Christmas morning - surely a 5* hotel should be offering a special breakfast of some kind' Some bubbles at least' Staff: Unlike many of the other reviewers, I'm afraid I do not have many positive comments about the staff, in our experience they were unenthusiastic and generally slow to understand anything that was being asked of them. We did wonder if we had forked out even more money on a bigger/better room whether the level of service would have gone up accordingly''!! The lady who showed us to our room soon after check-in did not know where the light switches were, asked us to help her and mumbled about being new. When asked for a piste map, the front desk staff produced something out of their locked drawer (who knew maps were so precious'), only for us to realise once we'd gone up to our room to plan our day, that it was a town map - a minor thing, but no apology when we had to go back down to point out her mistake and again request the piste map before we could get going (strangely enough, we had specifically booked Val Thorens and this ski-in/ski-out hotel as we are keen skiers..). In fact, there was no information given on any events that might be taking place during our stay, for example, the torchlight procession of the ESF instructors, the fireworks displays, the BBQ on the terrace one day (these are just the things we happened upon). Maid service was inconsistent - no additional bottled water after our first night, only one chair on our balcony, no spare loo roll etc. Before going out one evening we had a drink in the rather soul-less hotel bar (lots of staff, but nothing moving quickly), which overlooks the breakfast rooms / come restaurant. I nipped down to the toilets on the lower level boot room floor - as soon as I'd stepped off the last step I slipped on the floor which was wet. It had been mopped and no signs left to warn patrons of the slippery surface. I came up and pointed this out to the front desk staff, saying that I had just slipped and that it was very dangerous, what with no signs to warn people, only to receive an unenthused look and a particularly good shrug (but no concern for my wellbeing, no apology, no further enquiry). At that point I gave up with the staff and with this hotel! However, I must at this point, mention the very pleasant and knowledgeable porter who also gave us a lift to a restaurant on Christmas night - someone who actually gave us some information on the town at last! And also the gentleman assisting in the boot room who was friendly, helpful and knowledgable about the slopes. A great ski-in/ski-out location in the centre of town, but that's it and I really don't think that is worth a 5* price tag when the hotel is so disappointing in every other way.. I think we would rather walk 5 minutes carrying our skis to a decent 3* star hotel with good service next time we visit Val Thoren.
"A big let down based on the price paid!!!"
I agree with the previous review!! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is beautifully decorated in an amazing location, not only on the slopes but next to all the action. However, the price of the drinks and food were so high that we ended up drinking and eating at other hotels. The rooms were very small. The spa was very poor. I would say that is was three star quality. Dingy pool with no relaxing beds to lay on. The breakfast was very poor. The bacon and scrambled eggs were always cold. I did complain but nothing was every done about it. Pancakes were cold. Lovely view onto the slopes from the restaurant though. Definitely would not return I am afraid.
