"An exceptional hotel!"
I first stayed at this lovely boutique hotel 10 years ago, and when I needed to book for an overnight visit to Montreal I booked it with confidence on the hope that it was still a great small hotel. Not only was it all I remembered but even more delightful. Warm and welcoming, it is clear from the moment you enter the hotel that the staff loves their work and it shows! We were given the keys the moment we checked in which was mid day and they asked what time we wanted to leave the next day with no extra charge for a mid afternoon check out. The room was amazing, beautiful appointments, roomy and well equipped. Free wi-fi and breakfast. It is also well located between St, Catherine and Sherbrooke, easy to access great shopping and more. Andre the concierge was the best and most accommodating, not to mention charming. Looking for a great dinner reservation he spent time discovering what we liked and made a reservation at a fabulous and unique restaurant, Le Serpent. We would never have found this on our own as it is located in a warehouse district with minimal signage. A magical and memorable evening. (See my separate review of Le Serpent.) If you like small intimate hotels with outstanding service and warmth, this is the one for you!
"Great small hotel"
Stayed here for business and was very impressed with the hotel and personnel, who went out of their way to make my stay great. Only drawback would be the lack of bar scene but otherwise everything was superb. The rooms comfortable and everything designed conveniently. Would recommend and will return.
"Good hotel, but lacks two of important features"
Le Germain is a fine hotel. Rooms good, breakfast excellent, staff extremely competent and friendly. However, there are two problems. The first is that the room has no drawers into which to put your clothes. There was a closet, a few shelves, and that was that. We've been in many, many hotels, but this defect was unique to Le Germain. The second defect was not just annoying, but also dangerous--no grab bar in the bathtub/shower. This is an astonishing oversight. You have to climb into the bathtub to take a shower, and there's nothing to hold onto. This problem is so serious that I cannot recommend this hotel. Too bad, because Le Germain has many good points.
"What a lot of walking"
This group tends to have quirky, boutique style hotels in old buildings, retaining some of the rusticity of the original building while having very modern interiors. We stayed both here and in the sister property in Quebec and much preferred this one. It is up at the Mont Royal end of Mansfield so whilst that means a fair old walk down to the old town, basilica, etc it is very handy for walking up the "mountain" and for access to the station if you are catching a train, as we did. We had dropped our car of at the airport and took a fixed price taxi into town and I'm very glad we did as virtually every street seemed to be the victim of road works and driving looked a very stressful pastime in Montreal! The personnel manning the entry and reception were very helpful. One word of warning though. Before we went, we had enquired about the checkout time on our final day as our flight wasn't until late in the evening. We were informed that there is no fixed checkout - not quite believing this, we asked again, and it was confirmed again. However, when we told the receptionist, he explained that although this was technically true, in practical terms if they need your room, you can't keep it as long as you wish. He tried to tell us that 3pm would be the latest, however when he checked his system, my earlier email exchange had meant we were in fact booked in until 5pm so be aware and try and organise accordingly if this is important to you. The room itself was sizeable with a very comfortable bed/bedding and lots of little extras like water, coffee maker, etc. The glass between the room and the bathroom is interesting - but there's a blind to maintain privacy! I loved the illuminated table but the rooms are dark and on our first visit, we were fairly low down and awakened early by delivery vans, builders and dustbin men which was pretty annoying. On our second stay, we were in the same location in the hotel but a higher floor which was much more peaceful - go high! Breakfast was in a dedicated area on the mezzanine and well supplied with plenty of choice. There are plenty of eating choices both nearby and a few steps away so you'll be spoilt for choice.
"Wonderful weekend get-away in the heart of Montreal"
The staff at Hotel Le Germain Montreal are superb! Very helpful in every way. They also made excellent recommendations for places to eat. The hotel is within walking distance to most everything in downtown Montreal. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend!
