"Gay men of a certain age."
Hotel Lyskirchen was the nicest place to stay in a surprising seedy area of town, home to numerous gay bars that cater to the 30+ set. The pool is super clean and under-subscribed. The work-out facility is adequate and clean. Hotel staff was nice and unobtrusive.
"Good location with no personality"
Good location with walking distance to Old city, Kolner Dom, museums/attractions, brauhause(s) and shopping. Clean with basic amenities, this hotel does not have personality and I would not consider it boutique hotel. Could be good for a short business trip or a stopover. Staff's attitude is just mediocre, not overly pleasant (with exception of one young lady).
"Basic, average but reasonable position"
The rooms are simple but clean if not a little unusual having the shower and basin in the room itself. But... Curtains don't cover the window edges properly letting in so much light. Tap/faucet on the basin leaked from its base and had to be mopped up regularly. Extractor fan, which ran for too long, is noisy for me (and for neighbours). Breakfast was extremely over-priced and average. I am sure there are equally priced and star-rated hotels in the area I would try before returning here.
"A good basic hotel"
The location of the hotel is very good - near the city center and the river. The indoor pool seemed nice even though I didn't use it myself. The fitness room is small and basic but it was ok for my excercise purposes. There's nothing wrong with the breakfast but I still felt it was overpriced compared to what was offered in the buffet. In any case, the service was very pleasant and polite. A couple of simple things made me feel unwelcome, though: firstly, there's a capsule coffee machine in the room and the hotel communicates that it generously gives the first capsule to each their guest and in case you want more you have to go downstairs to buy more capsules. Secondly, the internet connection has good connectivity but poor speed. For a proper speed internet there's a fee per 24 h, which means that during a weekend trip watching Netflix one or two hours per evening or even having a smooth access to a newspaper would give you an extra cost of EUR 20.
"Enjoyed stay, good location"
Stayed here for just the night with my family, in one of their apartment rooms. it's a great location, just a stone's throw away from the river, with the train station terminals only a short walk away, as were a good selection of bars and restaurants. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was well cleaned, however initially lacked kitchen utensils. The staff were happy enough to remedy this straight away. We unfortunately didn't make full use of the hotel's facilities, and the children were disappointed that we didn't get a chance to use the pool, but i'd definitely recommend it, and will consider this hotel first should we visit again.
