We were so disappointed with our room. There was a blood stain a dark red stain (potentially blood) the size of a quarter on the headboard. The bathroom was recently remodeled but not complete...the shower head was disconnected from the wall and the both faucet almost fell off. The picture frames were splintered and cracked. We paid $300/night for the room -- at this price we expected high-end, well-appointed rooms. It’s obvious the place is being 'turned'. My recommendation - wait for the renovations to be completed before staying here or get a deep discount! Room remodeling aside, the staff was courteous and took care of the barking dog and rambunctious guests (police were called). My second recommendation – call the hotel prior arrival to ensure you are not booked on the same floor as guests associated with large parties.
"Stayed Here The First Night After The Sale..."
Stayed here, unwittingly, the first night after the hotel transitioned from Kimpton to Marriott. Hard to review given that the room seemed the same (nice), but, as one would imagine, the front desk was a disaster.
"Still the best hotel in Old Town"
We enjoyed a quick night in November to celebrate our anniversary. We have stayed here before and love The Hotel Monaco. It was a busy weekend, but we were still able to grab a seat for the free happy hour in the lobby. I was disappointed to be woken up several times in the middle of the night by drunk wedding guests but I can't blame the hotel. We called down to the front desk after the 3rd wake up around 3am and security responded immediately. We love this hotel and are sad to see it turn into a Marriott. Hoping for the best as we return in January.
"Kimpton Monaco is now 'Alexandrian, Autograph'"
As the other reviewer said, they changed owners and we had to make sure we got the deal that we booked months ago. The happy hour and 'in-room goldfish crackers' and other amenities being taken away stinks. We should've gotten a better rate since they took away some of the services. The restaurant staff and hotel staff were very nice - the computers in the Business Center didn't work so Monique M at the front desk helped me print a form that I needed. But the computers should have been working (no one had the passwords to login, I think). We checked out before the two large New Year's weddings ramped up (that the other reviewers mentioned), but the staff was helpful when we were there. The valet guys and doormen were nice, our room was clean. The location is great, you can ride the King Street trolley for free, (it goes to the Metro and down to the River) or walk to restaurants. We were on the street side which was a little noisy but that's city life. The beds and our adjoining rooms were nice, but again - kind of feel like it was a bait and switch with Kimpton to Autograph.
"not a luxurious NYE stay and Not at all Kimpton or elite Marriott quality! "
We booked the Hotel Monaco, a Kimpton hotel, months ahead of New Year's Eve and were looking forward to a great NYE in Alexandria. When we arrived we saw the signage was off the hotel and little niceties that we are used to seeing at a Kimpton hotel were gone - the front desk informed us that earlier in the week they had changed ownership of the hotel and it was now a Marriott and not a Kimpton, but was assured they would honor our reservation. When I asked about the wine happy hour and other perks, I was told sorry that's a Kimpton thing. When we got to the room, it was in need of repairs - the toilet handle was broken and room needed a deep cleaning of the carpet and moldings. I went down to the desk with the other couple that we were traveling with who had similar issues with their room (including a wet dog smell in the room). Again, even when advised of the issues and the fact that we were never advised of the change of the hotel status and lack of expected hotel amenities, we were not offered a discount. The rate online for the hotel was significantly lower than what we had reserved through the Kimpton yet we were still not offered a rate reduction. Our Kimpton package was also supposed to include in addition to happy hour a breakfast New Year's morning. The front desk finally after much discussion gave us a voucher for a free glass of wine at the restaurant next door (however when we looked at it closer, it had expired on 12/30/16 and it was given to us on 12/31) they never provided the breakfast vouchers nor was there a champagne toast available nor any NYE horns or hats. The staff seemed irritated to be there with not just us, but everyone that we saw them interact with while there. There were two large weddings staying at the hotel and many of those guests had similar disappointments in their experience at the hotel. This hotel is not worthy of being considered an elite or signature series of the Marriott and certainly is not at all close to what we've come to expect from a Kimpton.
