"Not worth it "
Clean yes , nice situation but please stay at another hotel in Malibu instead of this touristic area and expensive property. Old bathroom, expensive breakfast and no concierge . A nice roof top bar though
"Great stay in Santa Monica"
Although we are frequent visitors to Santa Monica we had never stayed at the Hotel Shangri La. What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. We arrived very late at night, having arranged a hotel car pick up on our arrival from New York. The first bonus was the upgrade provided, to a very good suite. We stayed a week and the only downside is the lack of full restaurant facilities, however breakfast was very good daily. The location is convenient to most things in Santa Monica and we will certainly be returning
"A wonderful hotel in a wonderful location"
We stayed in the Shangri-La hotel in Santa Monica for two weeks in September 2016 and we had a fantastic time. The hotel staff are so helpful and the service here is beyond reproach. The hotel is an original art deco building and so has a preservation order on it. The owners have got around this in a very sympathetic manner that does not interfere with either guest comfort or the look and feel of the history of the hotel. The hotel itself is in a V shape with external walk ways as you come out of your room- almost like little apartments. It was so nice to come out of our room and be outdoors. The walkways have fantastic views of the pool and bar below. Our room was a junior suite so we had a small living room and a kitchenette which was great because there is a fantastic farmers market on Saturdays and Wednesdays - we got to pick up some great local produce to have for breakfasts and lunch. The location of the hotel is great and well within walking distance of all the key sights of Santa Monica - 4th Street Promenade, the pier, the metro into LA etc. The roof top bar is really nice -but you need to get there early to get a spot to watch the sun set. This was our third visit to Santa Monica and this is definitely a hotel we will stay in for our 5th visit !!
"Booked a suite with gourmet kitchen to enable me to cook Thanksgiving meal for my family in Santa Monica."
Very character-filled hotel. Art decor. My room was large and had a splendid view of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Pier. Centrally located - very near 3rd St Promenade. Gorgeous outdoor bar around the pool. The art decor theme is followed throughout. The staff were all very attentive, courteous and went out of their way to anticipate my needs. The Concierge, doormen, bar-maid, hotel's car driver, front of house and maids were all excellent. I could not have asked for better attention. Before arrival I had requested the Reservation Manager to have wine glasses, champagne glasses, baking dishes, crockery & cutlery for 5, table to seat 4 adults and 1 child etc. This did not occur - but - the sight of my sad face propelled the Room Service people, kitchen people and the engineering guy into top speed and within a couple of hours, all of my requests were fulfilled - plus a high chair for my grandson - and a table cloth with napkins. Impressive service. Both TV's were hopeless. Poor reception and the menu did not work on either. The Thanksgiving dinner' Went superbly. Thanks to the extra attention of the staff - the people on the ground who actually see and interact with the guests.
"Great for location, views and staff but ........."
This was hotel was number 5 on our Californian coast road trip. I picked it for the location and liked the idea of it having character. Great welcome from reception and door staff and we were promptly personally shown to our room by the lovely receptionist. The room was very art deco in style and had a fantastic view of the sea. As our time was limited the hotel concierge (very friendly) helped us and we booked a half day private tour of LA. Yes this was pricey at $275.00 but as we were out for 4 hours plus perhaps if you don't have time to do the other more popular tours its something to consider. Breakfast was good and taken in the dining room which has great character but did have the edge taken off it by a party of 5 business people holding a meeting but was rather each one trying to talk over each other raising their voices to drown out each other. As I have said this hotel is in a great location bang on Ocean Ave and has fantastic views but some of that is a little spoilt by the number of homeless sleeping on the grass next to the promenade. It does benefit by a good rooftop bar , pity we missed the sunset due to our LA tour. We did find whilst staying in our Deluxe King room was it was cramped and perhaps the smallest of the bedrooms we had during our travels and the furniture was reflecting the period of the hotel so a little tired. We really didn't like , we understand this is a period property and some of quirkiness is due to it originally being build as apartments , was the bathroom. The bath is huge and really difficult to use being very high, particularly as there is no separate shower not good for me at 5ft 2 !! yes there is a stool but not really suitable to use when wet. We didn't like the floor in our room was dirty, this is due to the hotel having external walkways again a throwback to it being apartments. Overall perhaps some of the best service and staff we had in our travels but perhaps not the best room.
