The staff here were amongst the friendliest we have encountered on our travels. The room was to a very high standard and the service even stretched to the bed bring prepared in the evening ! There is plenty to explore around the hotel and if you fancy some authentic street cafes for your meals there are reasonably priced shoos at the far side of the square.Comment of H. Solid choice of a hotel. The best things were: super comfortable bed and excellent breakfast at the next-door Sofitel. The compound is in an area with mostly government buildings, so not a lot of local feel. I had morning tours scheduled, so was grateful for the hotel breakfast, as it would've been a chore to walk to anywhere nearby. Walk to the Drum / Bell Tower and Muslim Street were both about 20 mins. Coming back, I saw the bus 603 that came back to the hotel going by but never saw any bus stops for that particular route... Cons: Room was VERY small with a tiny desk area with limited electrical outlets. No view to speak of. Bathroom was of a decent size and the rainwater shower was great. Not near any real "local" neighborhoods.
"Location good, price good but had some issues with service"
Rooms are a bit dated but nice. For the most part service was good but I ran into a service issue. I had been in China for about a week already and was coming in from Shanghai. Having been walking around on brick, stone or asphalt for most of my trip, my back was hurting me pretty badly, so I went to the spa to get a massage. The price for a massage was $180 US dollars which was fine but when it was over, I wanted to charge it to my room and I was allowed to but was told that next time I needed to bring money. I walked from the building the spa was in to my building and I asked the desk if I had any messages. They told me I needed to pay for the massage before anything else--I'm used to other places where you settle that up when you check out--I had to go to my room and get my credit card to charge that. So other than making me feel like I was a dead-beat, everything was fine. I stayed at a Mercure in Chang Mai Thailand and had a wonderful experience so I tried them in China-- probably wont go with them again unless I go back to Thailand.
"A nice place to stay in Xi'an"
This was a very nice place to stay, based on other experiences in China, this was a very positive and pleasant experience. We stayed here for three nights and it was a very comfortable hotel, rooms aren't that big but they have a nice bathroom with good water pressure, really nice beds and comfy pillows. The hotel is clean and small, it's a few steps from the Grand Mecure which is nicer and was the one we wanted but didn't have rooms available when we visited. Anyway, this one was also great, it doesn't have a restaurant so every morning we had to go to Gran Mercury for breakfast, not a problem since it's only a few steps away. Breakfast was really good, with many Western options as it caters for many international travelers. This hotel is located in a private area, there's a gate to enter the compound, some nice gardens and other buildings. We like walking and exploring, so we found a mall within walking distance, a few convenience stores and even walked from there to the Muslim neighborhood which was an interesting experience. Overall, it was a clean, affordable, clean and convenient place to stay. I would definitely stay here again if I ever go back to Xi'an.
"Good hotel, good price."
Our three nights at the Mercure were great. The decor is a bit dated, but in great condition and we prefer that style to sleek and modern. The Mercure is the least expensive of the three hotels in the complex. It has no facilities in house, but an excellent full buffet breakfast is available at the Sofitel 50 metres away for only 75 yuan. The hotels are in a large gated complex in the heart of the city, built originally to accomodate Party officials and for conferences and it also has a concert hall. A medical conference was on when we were there and the driveways were often full of hire cars and drivers. It didn't cause us any problems. Staff were friendly, had reasonable English and were very helpful with bookings, directions etc. One complaint, and not just with this establishment, I find the modern trend of hotel bedding with a duvet but no top sheet annoying as you can end up with a choice of too hot or too cold especially with the controlled temperature of Chinese hotels.
"Peaceful and Green"
An absolute delight to stay at this lovely hotel. The grounds are welcoming and restful. Our room was very comfortable. Interaction with staff was always beneficial for recommendations to restaurants and attractions. The hotel is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the crazy traffic and noisy streets - and within walking distance to a Starbucks if in need of a java fix and the best Hot Pot restaurant in Xi'an. There are two other hotels within this grand compound that share the same wonderful large courtyard park. Outdoor security types are both discreet and obvious depending on the time of day. Would stay here again.
