"Nice Hotel and Nice service"
Very good hotel with nice people and super service. Only issue is there are not eggs and bacon in there morning menu. Location is close a Metro station but still located in a quiet area. Distance to City center is aprox 2 km.
Lovely room, staff very friendly, breakfast really good and loved the free coffee and homemade lemonade & ice tea and pastries on the rooftop terrace after a tiring days sightseeing - really lovely touch
"Huge disappointment, uncompromising management"
I booked Villa Emilia for 6 nights on the strength of the excellent reviews it had received by previous reviewers. It was more expensive than I would usually pay for a short family holiday. However, the 'deal' for the first 4 nights made the overall price acceptable. On arrival at the hotel I was taken aback by the intense smell of a rather cloying perfume in the reception area, which immediately hit the back of the throat. I was even more taken aback to find that the room smelled equally strongly of an unpleasant chemical that I took to be furniture or cleaning spray, but which was apparently perfume sprayed by the housekeeper. As a migraine sufferer, I am sensitive to strong smells and avoid wearing or being in close proximity to other people wearing perfume. Having been in the film business for many years, I have travelled extensively and stayed in many hotels across the UK, Europe and America and have never come across a perfumed hotel before! I was amazed to be told that the air conditioning in all the communal areas of the hotel was perfumed and that many customers apparently liked it. However, as perfume is such a personal taste, I find it extremely poor policy for a hotel to inflict such a personal choice on all their customers, without making it clear on the website or at the time of booking, so that customers have the information in advance and can choose to go elsewhere if it doesn't suit them, as it evidently cannot be turned off. I mentioned to the manager that it was making me physically ill and triggering a migraine and was told there was nothing he could do about it. As a consequence, the only thing we could do was find somewhere else with a triple room at short notice in peak season, or put up with it and avoid being in the hotel as much as possible! As we didn't want to spend the short time we had for our holiday traipsing around Barcelona looking for alternative accommodation, we had no choice but to stay at Villa Emilia. To make matters worse, the 'quiet' room we had requested at the time of booking was on the top floor, immediately below the kitchen of the roof terrace bar and we were disturbed on a nightly basis between 1 and 1.45am by staff clearing up the terrace, scraping chairs, clattering dishes and generally stomping around. Despite mentioning this to the reception staff on numerous occasions, this disturbance continued for the whole of our stay. The hotel is pleasantly decorated, the furnishings and beds are comfortable and the rooms generously proportioned. The bathrooms have powerful showers, are spacious, clean and decorated as one would expect in a 'boutique' hotel. However, this did not compensate in any way for the disappointment felt due to the aforementioned problems. We were offered red wine with montaditos in the bar as a goodwill gesture, which was unfortunately not a welcome solution for a non-drinker seeking to avoid the communal areas of the hotel! The reception staff were polite but seemingly lacking in both compassion and the authority to offer any discount. The proprietor refused their request to reduce our bill as a good will gesture to compensate for the upset and discomfort caused and despite frequently being in the hotel, did not attempt to speak to us or apologise. After spending 6 sleepless nights in the hotel on daily migraine medication, I was overcharged 16 euros for mini bar items we hadn't actually used. As a result of the general attitude of the management of the hotel and the lack of help resolving customer problems, I would not recommend the Villa Emilia Hotel.
