"Nice rooms, great location "
This hotel was perfect - close to conference center, nice large rooms, with a pleasant and helpful staff. The workstation in the room was comfortable and the wifi was reliable - free for up to 3 devices
"Perfect city visit"
Pulled up to 4th Steet entrance (a wee bit hard to find but we made it) and my companion got out to go get a valet or bell person; short wait for valet but he was cool. Left the car in a clean, safe garage beneath the hotel for 24 hours. Bliss. Our room was big - two queen beds and room to wander around; bathroom ditto; could have used another small table in there. Halls are dark but lovely; reminded me of the Royalton in Midtown Manhattan in the 90s. Innovative wall art in the elevators. Fun. We had a drink at Absinth and watched the young folks; had dinner at Hays St. Grill, still divine after all these years; heard a great performance at the Jazz Center, got a cab back to the hotel. Then the first disappointment. The bar at Zelos is on the 5th floor, sort of a cave but OK; we sat down and my friend was eventually asked what she wanted by a somewhat bored young man. He ignored me. Fixed her drink, put it down (perhaps more irritated than bored) and asked what I wanted. He fixed the drink. We felt we weren't wanted there. Paid for the drinks and took them up the room. We would have liked a lively, place with a city view but the Dirty Habit ain't it. Next morning we went to the lobby for coffee but, alas, no coffee. We're a bit desperate so go up to the restaurant (also part of Dirty Habit) with our paper cups from down stairs. The server couldn't even look up from a receipt he was tallying. He said "just a minute" and ignored us. We could see the coffee . . . etc. Otherwise the hotel and our whole stay (including breakfast at the Palace Garden Court) was perfect. And we'd go back to Zelos, just not for food or drinks.
"Pampered and pleased"
We were in San Francisco for 10 days and booked at the Hotel Zelos at Market and 4th street. Location is perfect if you are taking the BART train from SFO airport (Powell st exit is 1 block away-easily walkable). Hotel is in shopping and edge of Financial district. If you are taking any tours, many tour pickups are either to the hotel or an easy 3 block walk to Union square near Macy's. There are numerous restaurants nearby in all price ranges. The hotel lobby is smallish but welcoming as you enter. The front desk are efficient and friendly. The room was outstanding. Spacious and very tastefully decorated (there is actually a comfortable chair to sit in). We were in a room overlooking the courtyard- very quiet. Plenty of outlets to charge all those devices we travel with. Safe was of adequate size to accommodate our needs while we were out. Bed was comfortable and a/c quiet as well. Bathroom was a good size with a large counter. Very very clean. Plenty of hot water in shower. Staff were friendly and room was cleaned perfectly. Ate breakfast and the selection is nice. Service as everywhere else was efficient and friendly. Would happily stay here again.
"Great hotel in a great location"
The hotel was very nice. The lobby was small but the staff was extremely helpful and courteous. The room was nice but a little on the small side. All amenities of the room were very nice quality including the TV, clock radio, pillows, bedspread, and sheets. We had a 9th floor room with a view of Market street that was very nice but the second set of windows made it hard to take good pictures. The room was on the smaller side but it did not have a negative effect on our stay. The staff was always helpful and I noticed that they would recognize me most of the time walking back to the hotel and even from behind the front desk, the doors would open automatically for me.
I would say this is just an average hotel. Nothing special at all. Pros: Location, comfortable beds and coffee in the lobby in the morning. Cons: The walls are super thin. I could hear toilets flushing, kids crying, people coughing. I live in NYC so noise isn't an issue but it's just weird to hear people through walls. One day we came back to the room around 3pm and the cleaning lady never came. She eventually showed up around 4pm, we asked her to come back and she seemed annoyed. Every other day, things weren't even that clean. She left garbage on the table. Would only make one bed. Didn't replace towels. Never cleaned the sink area. Didn't refill supplies. Rehung our towels even though we left them on the floor. Took one of the bathrobes from the bathroom and never replaced it. Whenever I flushed the toilet, water came shooting out from the back tank. The water temperature was either scalding hot or freezing cold. I wish I had a picture of the red blotches all over after my shower. Good luck taking a shower if you're tall. I'm 5'3" and the shower head was literally on my scalp. My sister is 5'5" and had to bend a little. Obviously these are first world problems but not something that happens at a 4* hotel. Oh and more lighting is needed. The room was so dark. If my sister was taking a shower, I would use the mirror in the room, except there was no light anywhere near the mirror. I also disliked that the bar was packed for a pre-dinner drink. We sat at the bar, trying to make eye contact with 3 different bartenders. Sat there for 15 minutes without any acknowledgement before leaving. Later on in the evening we went back, around 10:15pm, and they were closing up...this was a Friday night. Our last night there, there was a fire alarm that went off at around 10:30pm. Of course we had to wake up at 4am. So we barely got any sleep. The next morning while waiting for our car service, we asked the front desk people what happened. They said it was just a glitch with the fire alarms and this has happened quite a few times because they are connected in the basement garage to the two neighboring buildings. Something about the construction that was going on caused issues. I don't know. Anyway, the hotel was fine but certainly not luxury. 3* hotel at best and I wouldn't pay over $150/night. The fire alarm is not something they can control unless this is really something that happens often. They need to do something about the bathrooms and the cleaning ladies. The bartenders need to know how to handle a packed place or they need to hire more than 3 for a Friday night.
