As a Spire Elite member of the IHG Group I have stayed at numerous 5* properties......this hotel was without doubt one of the finest I have stayed at. From the complimentary champagne and cakes for my wife's belated birthday to the overall level of service, simply won't be forgotten. Highly recommended and I'll certainly be re-visiting!
This hotel and staff was nothing but incredible. We loved every minute. It was hard to go out and explore Amsterdam when the hotel was so great! We had an espresso machine in the room, a great bath tub and shower, tons of space and a large comfortable bed. The pool area was beautiful with anything you could need. It has a great view.
"Classic first class service throughout our stay"
If you've read any of our previous reviews, you know that we enjoy the IHG line, especially the top tier Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza properties. The Amstel is an Iconic property currently celebrating it's 150th anniversary. Service from start to finish was first rate! The Amstel service ranks with the best IC properties we've enjoyed, to include the Cannes Carlton IC. It's always a pleasure to stay at a property that really understands service and treats its' customers accordingly. Our well traveled 11 yr old son accompanied us on this weekend trip; He was impressed with the hotel's service, pool and spa facilities. Breakfast was varied and plentiful with a beautiful view of the Amstel river while dining. I also note that the hotel takes care of it's IHG Spire members; we received a very nice upgrade to an executive suite. All in all, a fantastic stay at a world class property!
"Regal and Splendid"
The moment you walk into the lobby of the Amstel Intercontinental you realise why the Dutch Monarchy uses it as a kind of reception annex to their Palace. What is far more satisfying is that 19th century palatial architecture comes with impeccable service here. Checking in was more like having champagne afternoon tea, and one is courteously shown to one's room by the receptionist in charge. The concierge was a fount of information with a smile, even to the point of anticipating our next need. We stayed in a Junior Suite overlooking the river. Beautiful, calming views across to one of the city's iconic bridges. It is a large, comfortable room with separate sitting area, an oversized king bed and antiques all round. It is so thoughtfully provided that there are special sockets which don't turn off with the lights for charging one's electronics. The bathroom is really roomy with separate shower and toilet. Cleanliness is of the expected and matching standard. Wifi is quite good throughout the hotel and in our case free to boot. Breakfast is on a floor below the lobby, just level with the river. Although the quality is very good, there are a couple of issues. Cheese is of the sliced variety and has the texture of thin cardboard, an unacceptable practice in a country famous for its cheese. Coffee had to be sent back every day as it was invariably tepid. The Amstel Lounge is a beautiful conservatory like space that juts out onto the river front and is a charming and prominent architectural characteristic of the hotel. Service is dismal and most of the time you have to chase after a waiter scurrying somewhere else. Be that as it may, we were served the best waffles there of our entire trip (that included Brussels!). Unfortunately we had to cancel our reservation at the Michelin starred La Rive because we found seats to the Opera (thanks to the indefatigable concierge team). It is a pleasure reserved for our next stay. Checking out was swift and we were treated to a bag each of delicious house stroopwafel for our train journey to Brussels. The taxi to Centraal Station was already waiting for us, ordered by the thoughtful concierge who anticipated this need as well. If the world run like the Amstel Intercontinental, life would have been such a doddle.
