"Curates Egg- Good in Parts"
Everything has already been said about the staff, breakfasts and standards within the hotel which were exceptional, the couple below who gave it one star and moved on is totally unfair. However I do feel there are a few areas where improvements could be made, some have been highlighted by others. We checked in at 11.30am but our room was not available until 3pm, I E mailed a few days before our arrival to advise on this, as checkout is 12 noon and knowing we were waiting after a very early start preference should be given to get rooms ready for early arrivals. The shuttle to the port was full on most of the times we used it, whilst they make two trips more flexibility and hourly shuttles would be better. We were on half board and used each of the 3 restaurants but feel the Cap Roig restaurant should change the menu on a weekly basis as it gets very repetitive, no chicken mostly fish and 1 steak option. Would we visit again, not sure as the walk and to and from the port is quite demanding Chris R
"Excellent in most respects...but management please take note"
I am a seasoned traveller, and I have high expectations when the price is high. I often stay in the Madinat Jumeirah, so know Jumeirah pretty well. This isn't Dubai, and the business model is slightly different when they have to pay European wages, but overall the hotel did not disappoint, and there is much to love. The hotel is built into a cliff side, and it is spread out over quite a few floors. This wasn't a problem to me, and I wasn't the slightest bit offended by being handed a map on arrival, as the poor precious reviewer below me was! I think if you are upset by being handed a map, you're probably just not going to like anything, anywhere! The room was excellent, and the views from many parts of the hotel absolutely stunning, including from the bar, where there are incredible views over the mountains and over the port. The infinity pool is beautiful, but way too cold, which is a real shame. I don't know if heating wasn't installed (design fault), or if they just didn't turn it on! The hotel staff I encountered were all friendly, efficient and professional, as you would expect at this price, and from Jumeirah. There are a lot of lifts, and/or stairs, as you might expect from a cliff side hotel, but this didn't bother me one bit. The stairs were good excercise actually. I don't really want to spend too much time on the negatives, but there are a couple of key points the management should address as it really tainted our stay. The first is the Cap Roig restaurant, where we ate on the first night. They have a fish counter, with the raw seafood on display to choose from. We fancied a lobster starter, but the (very small) lobster on display was 135 euros. Ridiculous! So, without really checking the price, and making the reasonable assumption that we weren't going to get totally ripped off, we ordered 4 (small) prawns each as a starter. They arrived undercooked and not deveined, so we're gritty and bitter. How anyone who calls himself a chef can serve prawns like that is beyond me. Deveining them is an absolute basic. The prawns were served simply with a tiny salad garnish. The shock came when I got the bill. The starters were 40 euros per person. 10 euros for each small, gritty prawn! Outrageous! Especially when 6 large prawns at the infinity pool bar cost 18 euros, and were lovely. My steak main course was bog standard 7/10) and my wife's turbot dish luke warm, tiny, tasteless, and poorly thought out. I don't actually mind what I pay for food, as long as the product is commensurate with the price paid. This wasn't, by a million miles. I discussed this with the duty manager, but no attempt at restitution was made. They had the chance to turn a negative to a positive, but didn't. It doesn't matter how much money you have, there is a tipping point, and a point at which you feel utterly taken for a ride. I think the F&B manager should review these prices immediately, and understand that all that charging like this serves to do is create bad feeling in guests, and to ensure they don't eat in the hotel in the evenings again! The next four nights we walked down to the port and had excellent meals. Not cheap, but we got what we paid for. The other problem came when I wanted a coffee in the room. There is a coffee machine in the room, but the coffee from it was too strong, and there wasn't enough milk, and so I ordered one coffee with hot milk from room service. When it arrived and I went to sign for it, the price was 15 euros! Yes, let me say that again, 15 euros for one coffee! This was made up of 5 euros for the coffee and 10 euros service charge, I complianed and was told that the service charge would be removed from my bill. On checkout, it wasn't removed. Now I understand all about tray charges, but surely a little common sense should prevail when someone is ordering one drink. Or at least prime the staff to mention on ordering that the tray charge covers any and every order, however large or small. So on the above two points, dear management, please think how this kind of charging, and failure to do anything at all when the guest complains, leaves guests feeling. Apart from the food failings, which I can get round on future visits by having a poolside lunch and then eating out at night, I would return, as the good far outweighs the bad.
"Sheer luxury in a beautiful setting"
We decided to plump for a bit of luxury after a gruelling time at work. Well we weren't disappointed. This is the epitome of luxury. Perched above the Port of Soller this hotel is ideally situated being just a 15 minute walk down the hill (and heftier 20 min walk back) to the port and all the lovely restaurants. The hotel was spotless, well maintained, the staff professional and helpful. The Spa was stunning, with a heated pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the mountains. We had a wonderful stay and will return again.
If you've stayed at any other Jumeirah hotel, this will be a shocker. I agree with every point of all other reviewers who rated this as Poor or Terrible, and unfortunately experienced almost all of their issues myself in my less than 24 hr stay. We too cut it short and left the next morning. I now view the positive reviews with suspicion, and I too have lost my faith in the Jumeirah brand and will not stay at any again. Please read the bad reviews, see common issues, and think about it: it is not a 5 star hotel if you need to be handed a map at check in! At centreparcs yes, at an internationally reputed 5 star Arab group hotel, NO! I'm honestly baffled at how this 4 star shambles has the Jumeirah name, perhaps it is the folly of one of the spoilt nephews of the owning family.
"Escape from Jumeirah Alcatraz"
We booked 4 nights at this hotel based on the good Jumeirah name, this is a very expensive hotel but we decided we were worth it, we were in great need of mental and physical rest from our busy lives. This Hotel did not give us this, everything was hard work and confusing, you were always getting lost, i feel i never want to get in another lift again, we left after after a very long and unhappy 24 hours. We moved to Hotel Melia de Mar and are now getting everything we need, make sure you read ALL the reviews before staying, they are all true!!! I think the good reviews are made by people who have more money than sense
