"Steps away from Union Square...if that's where you want to be."
Stayed here for 7 nights.Large hotel that is ok. Staff is lovely and easy check in on the 3rd floor. The rooms are ok but get a room on a high floor to get a view of the city and natural light.Hotel is very convenient to all the city sites. Taxies and Uber work great picking you up or dropping you off at the hotel. The hotel is on the "better side" of Union Square slightly away from the drugs and homeless of the Tenderloin District though you can never escape this unless you stay at the Drisco.
We decided to travel to San Francisco for the Thanksgiving weekend and chose to stay at the JW Marriott. The location of this property is excellent. We flew into SFO and took the BART to the Powell Street station, It was a pretty easy walk from the station to the hotel. Every staff member we came into contact with over the weekend was very professional. We had a room on the 14th floor. The room, honestly, has seen better days. The tub didn't drain properly, the walls need a fresh coat of paint, and carpet was pretty threadbare. Given all of this, my rating may have been lower had we not gotten such a good rate. As a Gold Elite member I will likely try another Marriott property on next trip.
"BREAK IN OF ROOM....................NO assistance"
BREAK IN OF ROOM!!! SHOCKED AND APPALLED at the lack of customer service that has been shown to us regarding the break in of our room. There was no key card evidence of someone using a key' Really' Sounds like an inside job to me........ A hotel of this caliber and no one can provide me with video footage and I've been told this is the state law, which it probably is, but still does not bring my $1100.00 worth of stolen goods back to me. They are unwilling to provide any compensation because there is NO PROFF..... It's the Marriot for gods sake, pay up!!!! These doors are SOLID wood and we tested them multiple time to see if they automatically shut behind us and they did. Any fool can prove gravity right!! We left the room at 130 pm and arrived back at 1115pm and the room was picked over, bags were opened and thousands of dollars worth of clothing, electronics and other items stolen. Not a good look for you JW Marriot. Be advised that if you room is ever compromised they will call you a " LIAR " in a nice way to shut you up. You have been warned. I will NEVER stay in a Marriot ever again.
"Couldn't Have Been Better!"
This hotel was perfection from the minute we walked in! Upon check-in, we were greeted with two glasses of sangria, which was exactly what we needed! The lobby of this hotel is magnificent! You can stand in the middle and look up and see all the way to the top floor. There is a lovely, welcoming fireplace to sit in front of while making your plans for the day. The entire staff was very attentive from when we checked-in until we checked-out. We had a regular king size room and it was a very good size compared to other hotels in SF which are known for being quite small. The bed was beyond comfortable! I haven't slept that good in months! The room was very quiet! There was a couple with a dog staying next to us but we didn't hear the dog once. The bathroom was also fabulous! Great lighting for getting ready, with plenty of mirrors! There was a large tub and a shower. The shower was a little small, but it was fine for us. Another great thing about the room is that the TV's have Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora so you have so many more choices than normal hotels that want you to pay $20 to watch a movie. One thing that I noticed is that there aren't any rooms directly outside of the elevator which is really nice. There's nothing worse than hearing the elevator open and close all night! Our room included breakfast which was in the lobby of the hotel. This breakfast far exceeded our expectations! The customer service and the food were perfect! If you have the choice to include breakfast in your stay, I would definitely recommend it! Location is also perfect. Only about a 3-5 minute walk to Union Square where you can shop until your heart's content! We will definitely stay at the JW from now on when we are in San Francisco!
"Stay was good; but needs some updating..."
The last time I stayed at this property was in 2012; thus 4 years has passed. I recall this hotel fondly as at the time it met every level of my expectations! I returned with that warm glow awaiting the same experience. It seems that time has led to additional wear and tear on this property; and it may be time for this being a JW property to invest some funds into updating a few things. The room I was placed in was not nearly as nice as my prior stay. The tile was loose in the bathroom in areas and it looked significantly more grimy than a few years earlier. The bed was still firm and comfortable; but seems to be in need of updating. I could tell that it had been used by several guests which is not always the best feeling. The room was not as quiet as the previous stay; perhaps it was because I was not in more of a corner but in the middle of the hallway - thus setting me up for adjacent guest conversations and noises. One item I will say is that I did decide to take a bath on the first night of my stay to take advantage of the larger bathtub. Frustratingly, I simply could NOT get the drain to come up to let the water drain - so I had to let it sit there all night long. The challenge with this is the tub is adjacent to the basin and counter - so I had to be extra aware of this when I was drying my hair the next morning! I rather figured that housekeeping would see that I couldn't utilize the drain when they came in that morning and call facilities to fix it (I had a very early morning meeting that I had to leave for and couldn't take care of this myself). When I returned much later that night, I assumed all was fixed with the tub. Well....when I entered the bathroom I immediately noticed that the tub was, indeed, drained. But then I noticed that someone had propped and placed a box cutter very nicely in the corner area of the tub - I trust just in case I needed to use it to open the drain up if I chose to take a tub again that night! I found this to be a little shocking. In the end, is this still a great property' Yes - I just think they need to look at making some updates. It IS, after all, listed on the Marriott website as a luxury property at a Category 9. For the price though, and in a very large city and an expensive area of town, it is helpful to price shop other properties, too.
